$1000 for an entire set up - how would you budget? (1 Viewer)

Acquired:
LED Barrington $200; played on it, no plans to change it/get a topper at the moment
Chips $350; got a larger than I needed set that’s “future proof”
C&G cards $20

Remaining budget: $430 for chairs, though not sure if it’s really needed.

Pretty happy with everything so far.
was that the led barrington via walmart for 199? I got a barrington from them and the chairs are similar to the costco ones mentioned, but foldable padded cushion chairs via amazon and the height was fine. It was 10 chairs for around $190.

To truly enjoy an evening playing poker (good company and winning notwithstanding), you need (in no particular order):

~ a passable playing surface with rail
~ reasonably-comfortable chairs
~ an appropriately-sized set of decent chips
~ decent plastic playing cards and ancillary equipment (dealer button, cut card)
~ a good set of rules (this may actually be the most important)

Also need a space and good lighting, but those are not poker-specific.

All those things can run anywhere from as low as $500 up to many thousands of dollars.

Table and chairs are the two items not likely to be later upgraded, if initially of good or high quality. Chips tend to come and go, regardless of cost.

If I only had a grand to spend, there's no way I'm blowing over 10% of that on a topper, unless that IS the table.
$430 is plenty for chairs if you find the right deal. But I'd never consider $18 padded folders. I'm sure every chair and every butt is different but in my experience, $18 folders just make you hate the world in 90 minutes.

Sometimes without the luxury of a dedicated space the storage issue with chairs plays a big part in the selection process unfortunately, at least in mine a few others I know's situations. I had little choice but to buy padded folders, but my group doesn't seem to mind too much thankfully, gotta work with what we got right?

Will you upgrade later in steps?

If so, I would spend the lion's share on the best table you can afford first.
I was thinking this too, but from a slightly different angle. If you were going to ever save for better chips, I would spend the bare minimum on dice chips up front until you could save for the chips you want.

Never say never, but I doubt I will upgrade the chips. I like seeing everyone else’s collection here though.

Yea I’ve been using a hodgepodge of dining chairs and desk chairs. So far so good.

I have a Barrington table as my second table. I highly recommend getting a topper from @rjdev7. The cloth that comes with the Barrington doesn’t allow the cards to slide very well. The topper allows the cards to glide and also ads a level of protection against spills. And they’re only $140 if memory serves.

Thinking about it more after @upNdown ’s thread on Tina chips, I just don’t personally find a lot of value in upgrading from a 7.5 to 9 or 10, and that’s his scale. My scale is more like this:

Keeping track with pen and paper = 0, let’s just play something else
Dice/no denominations = 2
Plastic no denominations = 3
CPC no denominations = 3.5
Paulson no denominations = 4
Slugs/plastic/ceramic with denominations = 7/7/8
Custom slugs/plastic/ceramics with some art you enjoy =7.5/7.5/8.5
Ugly CPC with denomination = 7.0
CPC that aren’t ugly = 8.75
Paulson with denomination 9.0, 9.5 with art you enjoy

I don’t know what leaded Paulson feel like, but maybe that’s a 10. I don’t know what BCC/TRKs feel like

So I’m at 8.5 for $350. To get to 9.5 I’d probably needed to spend at least 10x+ more, and that’s for a set half the size.

Slugs with denoms being double the value of CPC and Paulson without denoms is bananas, but to each their own!

Yeah I think we’d all scale things differently. I’d probably put mint casino Paulson RHCs somewhere in the middle of the scale, like a 5 or a 6. So I’d be dedicating half my scale to the upper 5-10% of chips.

But bottom line, if you have chips with numbers on them that stack well, you’re way ahead of the curve and your money has been well spent.

Yea it would make sense to anchor somewhere so it all becomes relative. Perhaps dice, since everyone knows what they feel like, at 1 or 2 would make sense.

This is my issue with 1-10 scales. A 1 is those cheap plastic chips that weigh like 2g a piece and don't stack. A denominated sluggo is closer to a leaded paulson than it is to one of those, but on a 1-10 scale the slug is a 3 and the paulson is an 8-10.

Your setup will be fine, and you all will may be happy with it! No need for mOAr.

I just add that nice chips are nice on any table.

I think it is safe to say you are not a collector basing on that rating, as long as you are satisfied with your existing chips that is good for you.

Not going to compare as we are looking in from a different point of view.

Different priority from both groups
