When did this hobby change (3 Viewers)

There is one bright spot in the price increases. Before, I would have never ever considered walking into a casino, buying 4 racks of new THC 5s and walking out. Now if the chips have great spots, I'd do it without hesitation if they are new.
Not sure that’s a bright spot. I recall having the exact conversation with my dad way back before CT (circa 2003). I was spending months researching chips and he said why don’t you just go to the casino then you have authentic chips. My response was the amount of money tied up, yes they could be cashed in any time but even still would be thousands tied up. I realize how ironic that sounds now typing it as I’m well into that mark but this was also when I was much younger. Unfortunately wish I had purchased some of those $1/ chips back then that I was researching/considering.

I actually like this place better without bergs and butler. They might be nice irl but were both douchebags online most of the time. Argumentative, uncouth, and prone to personal attacks rather than engaging in discussion. Just my opinion though, for whatever it’s worth.

I really miss reading their stuff. They were hilarious. That said...they never turned their personal attacks on me, and frankly, I'm a snowflake and would probably be crying in a corner if they ever did. But just as an observer, I found them absolutely hilarious, and made everything more interesting.

I'm a member on other forums where I saw the growth from a few thousand to 100k-400k members and you lost that community feel. Also, on two forums, the sales got so large that on one they started charging fees to be able to post classifieds at all and on another they limit the free classifieds to a couple a month and if you want to post more, you have to pay. We have to remember that it costs money to run a forum like this and the larger it gets, the more money it costs so I understand why this happened. But this changes the feel and a lot of the old timers just don't participate as much and neither do I.

I've not been in this hobby for long enough to really see a change. But change is a fact of life. Especially in a community that is relatively small and growing but there are still only 5,630 members and I can't see it growing that all fast. What I love about this place is that there is a large group of people who are on here all the time so it does feels like a community to me.

In conclusion, this place is awesome. This is the only forum I've been on where I've met a sizable number of members in the flesh and they're all awesome.

I’m a tradesman so I got pretty thick skin, personal attacks (especially online) generally just roll off. It gets more tiresome than anything. I’m also an introvert, so naturally I can’t stand people that have to be the loudest one in the room to be the center of attention all the time.

Anyway, enough of my opinions here, I’ve prolly said too much already. Back to my quiet place lol

They're great in person, though they could be a challenge online. What hasn't been mentioned is how many other New Englandish guys either vanished, or took deep back seats along with the disappearance of those two. Debate aside, losing a region of chippers just stinks.

Agreed. I miss all of them, save one.

Agreed with @gopherblue I miss their collective knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for poker and chipping but can do without a lot of the ensuing antics. My idea of what a meetup should be really has been shaped by that crew’s games and “meat ups”

I do miss having @jbutler around. Probably one of my favorite posters evah

Well, hell, @BarrieJ3 is one of those yo-yos who hides his media, especially pictures of his chips . How am I supposed to decide what the mystery prize should be?

[Why isn't there a smilie for drumming fingertips on the desk?]

I don’t hide my chips ... just sayin’ :whistling:

Lol this was more me thinking I didn’t have anything people cared about for awhile. I hadn’t really thought of this until not too long ago.

Finally just ordered a light box after a recent thread discussing the best one, so I’m on my way to being a good PCFer.

I’ll get everything cleaned up and pictures taken for ya, and accept my grand mystery token over a drink at SQM?

yeah he was scapegoated as a boat buy leak. Complete story was bullshit.

don’t know what happened on your side of the fence.
I was ostracized from the NE group as a result of participation in the boat buy, then later dragged through the mud and accused of all kinds of ridiculously stupid shenanigans by a specific person.

(Fun fact—had I not been accidentally brought in to the boat buy, I would’ve been part of the BTP buy.)

FWIW, other than that individual, I’ve let bygones be bygones. TBH, I miss being trapped between Guinness and Bergs in circus games. Those guys are fun. Absolute drunk-monkey maniacs...but fun.

Wondered why Boston seemed so devoid of old timey chippers... too bad
