Razz doesn't sound like fun to most people, so I added a twist that gives the game a lot more action. We have played it on three occasions, and all three were a blast and there was lots of action.

It plays like *almost* like regular Razz, but there is a qualifier: One of your 7 cards must be either a Jack, Queen, or King. You dont have to play the face cars in your 5 card low hand, but in order to win, you must have a face card. (Unless no one else does either).

So the forced bring in isn't necessarily that far behind. A-2-3 hasn't qualified yet, whereas A-6-K has qualified. {Name redacted} once got A234567 and couldn't win! How fun is that when you can win Razz with KKKQQJ7??

So more people stay and draw than normal Razz. Bigger pots and more bluffing opportunities!

Razz-face? Sounds like fightin' words..... ;)

Interesting. Razz with a face qualifier. Could be a brutal pot-limit circus game.

Initial thought: This sounds dumb. But I'd have to play a few orbits to come to a firm judgement.

What poker game in the world has a qualifier that isn't required to be used at showdown but it actually is. It's basically 6-card poker.

The point of poker is that hands are ranked by their degree of probability to attain. To have A-2-3-4-5-x-x lose to 2-6-9-10-[J,Q or K] would be infuriating.

If you want to liven up Razz, try Razzdugi.

Second thought after thinking about it for a minute... still sounds dumb. I would veto this if someone called it in my game. Sorry man.

Razz is already an infuriating game. To have A2344KK or A234xxx (x=T+) lose to 24689xx after three drawing streets is certainly possible and totally frustrating, and merely part of the basic game. Same here if you have a great hand but no qualifier.

In a vacuum (not compared to Razz, but on it's own merits), I think it's a viable game, especially considering the much larger number of opening hands that can be played. The down cards can definitely affect betting strategy and the ability to run bluffs. Like most split-pot Lo games, you have to qualify to win -- but in a stud format with a qualifier, you never know if it's a down card.

I'd give it a go.

Sounds like there will be an option to play this ($4/$8 limit) at BARGE this year.
I will report on how it goes.

There is a six-card stud game (hi-low) called Sassy where this is an optional two (and only two) card draw on the end followed by a round of betting.
Action Rassy would be an interesting variant.

How about this for a Razz variant... hi-lo split where the best 2-card hand takes half at showdown.

High hand qualifier is that it must be a pair. No qualifier for low.

If this already exists and has a name, please let me know.

Right off the cuff, the problem I see here is that when someone shows AA or KK (when all the A's are accounted) then the action will/should be limited by all the other potential high/2 card hands folding.

You're right - open pairs tend to limit the action in many forms of stud.

I was thinking about it in terms of the concept that it makes paint on 3rd or 4th street playable against players with low cards showing - similar to the remarks in your OP. It also theoretically creates equity for the bring-in.

Razzaho: 7-card Razz/Omaha hybrid, with five community cards (flop dealt after 4th street, turn after 5th street, river after 6th street).

Best Razz hand (like normal) splits the pot with best Omaha hand (using three board cards and two of player's three down cards).

Great game.
