Thanks to all for the insight here - I think I've definitely decided to go the inlay replacement route for my new set. Putting a pin in this for reference.

Don't thank us yet. Even though 2/3 of inlay removal will probably go smoothly, that other 1/3 will be a serious pain in the @$$. Be warned, and go in with eyes wide open.

So I decided to go down this route of doing a full replacement on my label-over set. I like the design/chips enough that I'll keep them - so why not?

1. Horseshoe Chips - easy. almost fall off. Slice the protective cover, peels right off, soak the underlying label and they almost fall off in one piece like butter.
2. Good Luck Club - Same as above - easy
3. Paulson Sporting Set Climbing 500's - HOLY SHIT! I don't know what the difference is but these underlying labels will not come off. I have done several chips, probably ruined 1 or 2 and the best I get is scraping them off 1 microscopic piece at a time. I have soaked it multiple times, still will not come up. No way I can do this for 160 chips X 2 sides!

Any suggestions/ideas/experience with a label such as what I am experiencing with these purple chips?

Good news, I got the samples you sent me to try on.

Cut, soak, and lift. No issue. I think you may need to try another chemical. Long and short soak sane result.

Well, took a practice crack with some sample Horseshoe Cincis - it actually went really well!

I found that when pulling the plastic cover tore a hole in the vinyl sticker, a quick soak in the nail polish remover and the whole thing peeled right up. If the sticker stayed intact, it was a bigger pain in the ass (but honestly not much).

Not sure I’m emotionally ready to cut open a Jack yet, but I sure hope the inlays come out as easily.

Just murdered my first casablanca $5.

I was interested to see what the recess would look like, given that the inlays are larger than standard.

A small portion of the top hat on some portion, of some chips was pressed out when the original inlays were compressed into the chip.

I just slaughtered 155 CdM 200/200,000 and it felt good. MWAHAAHAAAHAA!

How long did that take you. I’ve spent hours today in front of the tv doing it and this is all I’ve managed.

About 3 hours. 80% of the time, it was very straightforward. The other 20% required full face scraping off a paper inlay. It is quite a bit more work to take off a stubborn paper inlay than a stubborn vinyl inlay.

It might be due to the age of the chips. The epoxy under the inlay for most of the chips was less robust than others I have removed.

Welp, here we go:

Initial reaction, the plastic is harder to get off than the horseshoes, but the vinyl is a little easier. One Q - I’m getting these pencil mark looking things on the edges of the chips - is this just cross color contamination? Can I wash this off somehow?

Cut the plastic with an exacto knife and use pliers to pull off the plastic. Your fingers will thank you!

Oh, I’m definitely using an exacto knife to cut the plastic, I’ve just been peeling with my fingers once it’s cut. Haven’t felt the need to use pliers yet, but I’ve only done a handful.

Trust me, you will feel the need.

Pliers are your friend. I do the Pac-Man slice with the X-acto, then use a small box cutter blade to dig underneath the pointed flap from the center, until there's enough to grab with the needle nose pliers, then I pull in a rotating motion until the laminate cover comes off. With any luck the inlay underneath comes off all or mostly with the laminate.

Sorry, I should rephrase. I tried wiping with a wet cloth, and they didn’t come off. The better question is what are the preferred cleaning methods from least to most aggressive? I’ve heard that magic erasers are great, but very abrasive on chips. Curious what other cleaning agents I should try first.

You can try a mild soap or dish detergent and water and scrub with a toothbrush first. I’ve used Simple Green on some chips as well. Ultimately, you can use the ultrasonic method but not sure if you have one. Hope that helps. Good luck and let us know you outcomes.

I'm very intrigued by this. Thinking about doing some 5k chips for my cdi if i can find a suitable paulson chip. Have anybody had any bad mishaps with the nailpolish method and how does such a chip look?

How about using some special sticker remover?

I got some fine cleaner, based on petroleum distillate. The papers need to be inserted into the distillate only for about 30 seconds for the stickers to peel off.
As long as I used this cleaner for other circumstances I have always been happy with it.

I just got done removing the inlays on a few racks and thought I'd share the technique that I settled on.

With an Xacto knife, I slice through the plastic cap using a 5 o'clock path. From the top of the inlay to the center then a short little slice towards 4:00-5:00.

Still with the Xacto knife I pry up a little flap at the intersection. Just enough to be able to get a grip with the pliers.

The wife had some beading pliers that are now chipping pliers. Using the pliers I grab the flap and pull off the plastic cap up to the top of the chip.

The rest is pretty straight-forward. I peel off the plastic working clockwise around the chip. Most of the time I'm able to get the entire plastic layer off in one piece.

Then a couple drops of non-acetone nail polish remover on the remnants. A quick soak (or maybe a little longer soak for some stubborn chips) and the last layer comes off relatively easily.

Anyone ever have to mill chips just to get the label off?
I have multiple chips and these Gamblers Pleasures are pretty much 100% not coming off. My Horseshoe Cincinnati's I could slice and peel the plastic and label off by hand. A little soak on a stubborn one and the paper would lift right up.
These however are a completely different breed.
bought 2 different nail polish removers thinking that might help, but get the exact same result.
I also have these same chips with different inlays and the Good Luck Clubs peel right off, The Climbing & Skiing are hit and miss, some easier than others.
But these Gamblers Pleasures

I probably have ~200 of these across the 500 & 1k chip, not sure until I peel off my label over to see which is which.
No way I can scrape microscopic pieces off that many chips without my head exploding

I have figured out a process to get these off but it is seriously making me think twice about going forward with my relabel cash set.
One thing that has held consistent, on my chips anyways, it the actual casino chips are a breeze but the fantasy chips are the royal PITA. I can't say for sure that is true for all chips, but it has held true for me.
I guess the Horseshoe chips spoiled me in this process, because if they were all like this I would already be done instead of done with 1 barrel.

I've generally had the opposite experience. Less problem with the fantasy chips, more with the casino ones. But I've only tried 1 type of each.
