How many racks of $5's for a cash set is enough? (41 Viewers)

I have moved from 5 racks of $5’s to 4 racks and the main reason is that playing on a round table, space is valuable. There is less space to spread out big stacks. But I like 6 racks in a set because with 200 $1’s, 600 $5’s, 200 $25’s and 40+ $100’s that set can now handle a second table if you end up with 12+ players that night. Stretching a single table set to cover two tables kinda sucks.

I just reread your question and you want to know what is the minimum amount. This past Saturday I used my set of Faro Dunes for $.25/$.50 $5 Spread Limit Dealer's Choice Circus games and I chose to bring two racks of fracs, two racks of ones, one rack of fives (I have 3 racks) and one rack of $25. 7 players with starting stacks of $100 (20/20/15). We had 5 reloads of 4 @ $25 so $1200 on the table. Available reserve bank was $2050. Does that mean the minimum amount of $5's is 1 rack? Not if I bring my set to a meet-up in Ohio! Not if the game is $25 Spread Limit. Not if the game is No Limit. That's why guys try to bullet proof (get the pun?) their set by going for 3 or 4 racks and even adding in a barrel of $100's to cover any situation. I'm going to vote for 3 but as I showed 1 was enough.

IMHO, somewhat risky to have the same chip set on two simultaneous tables, even without any bad intention on the part of anybody.

Why? I control the chips. None get in play unless I hand them to someone. Eventually we will collapse to 1 table. I don’t want to have to cash everyone out from the second table then rebuy them into the main game.

At a home game it's a controlled environment so I say the risk of using a single set across 2 or more table is minimal. The players are vetted and are invite only. More risk for a place where randoms can show up and try to sneak something in, which is why they have more security.

Also, following the PCF way, even these large sets are likely rotated so not the same set is in play week after week.

It's even less risk for the home game when the chips are custom or semi custom.

I think this really depends on the stakes.. Some games claim to be "$1/$2" but we had 20k on the table.. While my "$1/$1" is a little bit more modest with an average of around 6.5k on the table for a 7 max game.

For your question, I have played in many games $1/$3 games where the host only spread 2 racks of $5s. That's my answer. But in terms of comfort, I prefer 4.

Last couple of meet ups at @detroitdad ’s, I banked two tables and both times all 800 $5s were in play.

I would say that the stakes will dictate how many $5s you need.

At my home game, we play $1, $2, $4 bet structure. 2 racks of $5s is plenty. At a friend’s game, we play 1/2 PLH/PLO with an average buy in of $300. For that game, 4 racks is best. Initial buy in gets $20 in $1s, $205 in $5s, and $75 in $25s. Future buy-ins receive $25 chips.

4 is all that's really needed, but 6-8 is preferred

FWIW I have banked multiple tables at multiple DIDs (both Craig and Roman played at them at one point or another) and never brought more than 2 racks of $5s. Was not a problem and no one noticed or commented on not having 5-8 racks of $5s scattered across the table.

Normally you're making change for your 5s in exchange for 1s and fracs.

We were also making change for our 25s in exchange for 5s and 1s and fracs.

Wanted to point out that the title/poll are asking at least two different questions, though: title asks how many racks are “enough,” while the poll asks what the “minimum” number required is. And the OP asks how many are “really needed.”

-2 is probably true for absolute “minimum” required
-3 would be my answer for “really needed” (could work assuming you have enough of the other denoms)
-6 would be the vote for how many racks are “enough”
