Would anyone felt $10s on top of $5s? Would a rack count as two racks of $5s?

We’re talking for 1/1 sets that don’t have enough $5s.

Also if you were felting $5s and $10s, would you rather use $20s or $25s?

I think I rather skip the $10 for $25s. Just easier to count stacks

It plays ok and not as cumbersome as I though it would be. It was only done because 5s were so hard to come by for the set. For most situations 5s are way more abundant.

If you were playing 10/20 then 10s make more sense :)

For my $0.25-0.50 game which plays bigger than that…the current chip set is:
$0.25 - 100
$1 - 200
$5 - 300
$25 - 150
$100 - 100

We’ve never had to use all of the $25s or any of the white $100s yet, so they have remained clean, crisp, and free of hooker juice. In my opinion, I could probably use another rack of $5s, lose of 50 of the $25s, and get rid of all the $100s. BUT I will say…3 racks of $5s is perfect.

Yeah I only played a fake stakes game with my family to see if it would play well and it seemed to work well, but I didn’t particularly like green $20s with yellow $5s for whatever reason… I blame @JeepologyOffroad for putting that in my head :cautious:

But actually just using $10s and $20s would be nice, especially if I had quantity… or could play $5/$10 or $10/10, $5s serving as fracs… then I wouldn’t need $1s… hmmm

Yea depends on the set and the amount of of original 5s and 10s, but it could be done without too much issue I think.

The set we played with had 2 racks of 5s and 2 racks of 10s.

Your game plays too big for 20s. I don't like 20s either, 25s play better for us.
Yeah but I play all stakes but fracs. $20s are the staple in some Cali sets. I just can’t get my brain or players to wrap around a barrel is $400 etc or when making any bet for that matter using $20s #idiots

Same, most casinos and places I play are $25 so trying to adjust $20 wasn't smooth. In theory it sounded nice back when we were doing $40 buyins but now it's $100 so the $25 is so much better. It also transitions over better for bigger games when people are buying in for several hundred at a time.

In the occasional $1/$1 ($100 max) PL games I run, there's easily $2k on the table within a couple hours of starting. I have 17 barrels of $5s and I invariably sell out of them.

Getting big chips in play isn't a problem and really doesn't hinder gameplay, but more reds would be better.

Maybe change the headline @JMC9389 to include stakes.

“Enough” as in maximum you would ever need to be happy? Per Booyah regulations…

.25/.50 - 3 racks
.50/$1 - 6 racks
$1-$2 - 8 racks
$2-$5 - 10 racks
$5-$10 - 5 racks
Tried to change the poll title as @ChipFinderSK pointed out but was unable to. I'm happy to prompt the conversation either way and agree that it's highly stakes dependent. I settled on primarily 0.25/0.50 as that's a typical meetup table stakes, but the number definitely changes once the realm of 0.5/1 or 1/1 and beyond is introduced.

$5s and $10s play well together. Not a fan of $20s whatsoever.
$20s suck. Seems like all the experienced card players I come across agree that $20s suck. I just happened to fall for one particular $20 chip when came here. I thought it was cool. (I was right, but that doesn’t mean it plays well.) Now they're just my cross to bear.
But for a .25/.50 game, the rational response to being stuck with $20 chips is to use more $5s!!

Anyway, my take is this.

For the past couple of years, I've brought sets to meetups with the breakdown of 200/200/200/80/20 and haven't once run out of bank playing 0.25/0.50 (even with Craig and Roman at the table). The closest I came to it was being down to the last barrel of $25's and not even touching the $100's. We played from 1pm to 1am with players coming and going.

Ideally, I'd like to have two more racks of $5's and have built my meetup ready sets to accommodate this. It strikes a nice balance between having healthy stacks of chips and running the bank smoothly.

Lots of folks fly and drive long distances to meetups and may not want to/be able to carry a chip case weighing north of 40 pounds to accommodate a 15 rack set with 8 or more racks of $5's.

TLDR: What's absolutely necessary to me? 2 racks. What's ideal to me? 4 racks. Anything more is a luxury.

2 minimum. You don't NEED more. But yes, obviously the more you have is generally more fun.

I haven’t hosted in many months, maybe almost a year now (geez been too long). But when I do host a 1/2 300max game, I do starting stacks of 15/22/7 (44 chips total). So technically I would prefer a min of 220 reds, but I have 3 racks.

Well it sounds like I’m just SOL not having 2 racks of $1s or $5s, a single rack of $10s and only 120 $20s.

Like 50 $25s…

But a rack of $100s lol

if the players know how to count chips I like a lot of chips on the table. I wanna play a 25c/50 or $1/2 game with just fracs and $1s...i want to feel baller by pushing in barrels and stacks....I say 200 fracs and 1000 $1s and maybe a few $5s....like a limit set......but i hate limit games

I constantly feel the hate for $20 chips on here but I attribute it to age. Every home/non-casino poker game I played in before the so called "Moneymaker Poker Boom" circa 2003 was cash on the table. At that time I was already in my forties and a lot of my poker habits were already formed. Very seldom were chips ever used. In fact the main game I played in was a $20 limit game so a $20 bill was a standard bet denomination.

I don't see why anyone can't count with $20's but for me it's an ingrained behavior that I learned and $25's as a denomination came much later for me so I adapted, I guess most people can't adjust to counting with $20's and since cash is becoming non-existent nobody will ever know how to use $20's. Similar to how most cashier's can't count change back anymore.

I will continue to be weird and use $20 chips in most of my sets as IDGAF (says this old man yelling at the clouds). :D.

The reason I like more 5's is because I like 5s as the workhorse ( 2/3 or 3/5) and don't even want $25s on the table. If you are betting 75, it feels good to slide out a stack of 5's instead of 3 green chips.
Fracs should be at a minimum, 5 just piled up, and over sized 100's to use for huge bets to get a reaction.

Not sure I agree that’s the reason

I’m 51 and we had a set of diamond plastic poker chips for poker and the blackjack game we ran in college way back in 1995. I never played poker with $20 bills and the only non chip games I saw were highschool circus games with quarters and maybe a few dollar bills. Moneymaker just made poker the game popular and convinced millions of new players tournament poker was the norm.

The dislike of $20 chips is more likely due to them not being common in casinos. I play in AC often and the only $20 chips you see come from baccarat games. The only time you see $10 or $20s used for poker is when those are the blinds and the game is run enough to warrant it

I’ve always kept my colors and denominations in line with what the casinos commonly use as it makes it easier for me and my players.

BTW, the last time I played $1/3 at Borgata a player had a yellow $20 chip in his stack and several players asked about it. It was from baccarat. He used it in a bet and the dealer changed it out for four $5s when it went into the pot and put it in his bank. I guess they don’t like them in play for some reason.
