The Showdown Chips seemed to do what I wanted. Then I went down the rabbit hole of watching poker chip reviews and reading this forum. I took the advice of many on this forum and bought sample sets. The first four sets were from Apache. Not quite satisfied, I have since placed two separate orders each from the Poker Store and BRPro Poker, so now I have eight sample sets.

I like the Rustic Ceramic from The Poker Store the best, with one exception. The 1000 and up chips are 43mm while the rest are 39mm. Not what I want. If they were all 39mm I would happily place my order and be done with it. But, they don’t offer that option. Do any of you know of a source for something similar?

Woah. First dude I've ever seen take the get samples thing to heart. To echo what chip monster said, check out broken arrows page, the rustics design are not complex and could replicated quickly or even customized to your liking. So long as you like the feel of the broken arrow no molds, you could easily meet your needs.

And the discipline not to buy samples in the form of 100 chip racks. Well done 👍
Take their advice and get the chips from Broken Arrow, and get out. If you don’t, I see potential for some serious chipping in your future 😂
Just kidding, from that picture it looks like it’s too late.
Welcome aboard!

I have looked at the group buy information and it seems confusing to me. I haven’t seen anything that looks similar to the Rustic Ceramic set. Is there a thread that any of you could point me to that explains the group buy for us beginners?

The group buy lets you order whatever you want (looks wise) on a Tina ceramic chip. Justin facilitates the buying (ordering and shipping part of the process) instead of you going through the Chinese manufacturer directly.

I don’t know if that exact looking chip is available through Justin, but if that artwork is available then you can order it through that group buy thread with your own customized denominations.

If it’s not available, there are MANY designs available that you can choose, you are also able to choose the mold of the chip (or no mold/flat chip if you prefer that which it seems you might). Take a look at the group buy page and there’s a link to other designs, you can scroll through and see if you liked one to order.

Only other thing is the next group buy closes early March, meaning you probably won’t get the chips until the end of May or early June.

@KEL, why do you like the rustic set?

Personally, I like the Majestics from Apache with Gear labels

After all of this looking at chips online and the samples I received, I simply like the looks the best of all those. I did get one of the Majestic chips from Apache in their “Super Poker Sample Set” and do like the looks of those chips online. So, I have been back to looking at other options. I am guessing that at least one more sample set will be in my future as what I see online doesn’t always translate to what I see when I get the samples.

The following seems to be what I think I want:
Bold bright colors
Numbered without the $ sign
Smooth ceramic but I’m back looking at other molds and clays again.

I still like the Rustic set. They come close to the Atlantic Club Hot Stamped Chips which aren’t made anymore (and I would’t want to spend that much if they were). I want all chips the same size and the colors wouldn’t have to be the same as the Rustic; but bright colors.

In re-exploring options, I have found I like the looks of EPT replica chips. After I have enough posts, I will likely direct message Broken Arrow to see if he has samples in the EPT replicas or something similar to the Rustic.

I am at, at times, tempted to settle on the Penthouse Chips from Apache. When I say settle, I don’t think there is anything wrong with them. I simply don’t love them as much.

Poker store is clearly the better ceramic chips.. compared to others and those Rustic ones look nice..
But all these ceramic chips I used are slippery and they don't stack too well and they do get worse with use.. (my experience)

"Royal flush chips" were truly the best ceramic chips I used, They stack super nice, but don't think he is taking orders anymore

Coming to 43mm.. 1000's.. The utility of 1000 chips when you have 500's.. is really Low.. If you are not specific and love rustic you should proceed with ordering more 500s..

Also Valentino Ceramic Poker Chips on poker store are my favorites.. and our group loved them at one point.. we moved on to clay now.. :)

Good Luck

Of all your samples, it doesn't look like you have any clay chips.

Kel, welcome aboard.

Now post again right here, and tell me hello.
Hello

Of all your samples, it doesn't look like you have any clay chips.
I believe the Banks Chips from Apache are listed as clay, plus I have a single chip of everything Apache sells in their Super set. But, that is all I have in clay. I will be taking these while I travel with my 5th wheel camper and am thinking they might stand up better to the jostling and temperature shift of the trailer. Not sure if I am right about that.

I’ll also add that while I can’t speak to Poker Store’s offerings and capabilities, BR Poker will do semi-custom chips (ie changing colors, denominations, etc.). I’m assuming that Poker Store may have the same flexibility so if you truly love the Rustics the most but don’t like the larger chip they may be able to print those higher denominations on the 39mm. May be worth asking or seeing if BR Poker has anything you could tweak.

Sky is the limit on how to get chips customized to your liking through this community either via custom labels, ceramic, hot stamps etc

If you are new to this forum the whole Broken Arrow/Tina chip situation isn’t intuitive.

Broken Arrow is a member here that sells cards and chips he has made through a manufacture in China (Tina is the reference to his contact there). They are ceramic chips but there are options with molded in designs and textures along with eh option to have a label inserted. This way you can get a ceramic ships that looks and feels very very close to a clay chip for A LOT less money.

He has a link where you can view all the premade chip designs. Many are copies of real casinos with the appropriate edge spots…but they are not identified. You recognize them if you know these famous casinos and their chips. They are presented as set with all the colors but you can mix and match by the codes. Like a white chip from one and a red chip from a different design set. You can choose some options that have artwork or you can just send him a file of your own artwork for the label. I think this is a really cool option and having just bought a set of 1200 I can attest that they look and feel very close to clay chips..

They also have an option of doing flat ceramic chips, much like BR pro and any design or edge spot you can come up with.

I own a 1200 chips set of ASMs custom clay (now classicpokerchips.com), a 1200 chip set of BR Pro 43mm’s, and a 1200 chips set set of Broken Arrow/Tina (their Bellagio chips with my own modified label) in 39mm

The clay chips are the simple 312 pattern edge spot which was all that was offered in 2002 when I put my first order in. They are now $2.52 a chip. More interesting edge spots designs can be more than double that.

The BR Pros were .90 a chip I think and i did a design that didn’t require the extra expense of edge bottle alignment

The Broken Arrow set cost me just under .50 a chip I think. With this option you want to get the artwork squared away because there is no back and forth and help from the manufacturer's designers. They also dont send proofs

All that said, for a first set, it’s hard to not recommend the Tina/Broken Arrow option. They are the least expensive and offer a lot of bang for the buck. They will take 2-3 months.

Custom Clay could take many months and get very expensive if you get the more interesting edge spots designs they offer now. But they will be as close to real custom clay casino chips you can possible obtain

BR Pro will help you with the design and are very pleasant to deal with. They take only a couple weeks to ship. These are straight up ceramic chips…which some casinos use as well

Pictured here are my Tina/Broken Arrow, the Br Pro and Clay chips in one pic, and the set of BR Pro 43mm so you can see the difference

thanks for providing a good summary of these processes. I am really new to all of this as well and found it a bit overwhelming without much direction. I had seen a different thread of someone coming up with a search function/filter but don't think it was seen to completion.

Thanks for taking the time and posting your thoughts.

I really like the colors (bright and bold) of your chips. Are the Branca chips you show from Tina/Broken Arrow? The $25 and $100 chips look like they could be 43mm, but that could just be the camera angle.

I think that exploring the Broken Arrow option is something I will be doing. I would really like to find something I love in that $.50/chip price range.

Yes from “Tina” and all 39mm. I went with 39m to closely mimic the Bellagio

They do offer 43 and if I was doing it again I’d go that route as the centers are bigger and show off the artwork better and everyone at my games seem to enjoy the 43mm BR pro chips. Both are fine but 43 is a bit unique and a nice change of pace.

With 43 you just have to understand the types of rack you can get. There are two solutions …clamshell types that Broken Arrow and Apache sell and regular casino rack that Banksupply sells. The former work in traditional birdcage carriers you can get anywhere and the later require a larger birdcage that supplier also sells.

For .50 a chip Tina/Broken Arrow is 1000% your best bet. You can see how close they look here.

You can do whatever color/denomination combo you like. Personally I stick to actual casino standards. I live about 2 hours from AC so my custom chips all use white $1 and stick to $5, 25, and 100s for denominations. Many of my regular players also play in the casinos in AC and PA and the helps keep confusion down.

Most casinos dont have chips below $1 so for those denominations I’d personally pick odd colors

In Vegas they use blue for $1s so that’s the only reason I did that in my Bellagio homage. The $3 $10 and $20s in this pic are for specialized games and are not needed. CA has a different color standard as well.

I want to thank everyone for your responses. The big theme seemed to be to check the group buy. With @Old State detailed explanation of the group buy, I went back in and looked at it again. And after reading everything, finding the links to examples (that were right in front of me the whole time) and reviewing those, I have now found several different possibilities I will enjoy. Now, just to decide and place my order for the March buy.

Again, thank you everyone.

I've purchased a few sets over the years and I can definitely appreciate the struggle of finding the perfect set. Ceramic or Clay? I landed on clay. Denominations required for the tournament structure ($100, $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000). So many of the sets I found skipped $10,000 and went straight to $25,000. I probably could have made that work, but a $10,000 denomination chips was better for my situation. How legible is the denomination? I'm getting older and appreciate large print. So many sets that hit the other marks had tiny (to me) font for the denomination. Previously, we played with a non-denominated set and had to remind people of the chip values all night. Small print wouldn't have been much better.

I eventually landed on Milano's purchased from ChipCave.com.

Bluff Canyon were the runner up and I obtained a set for the folks that hosted the regular game that got me hooked on poker.

You're not talking about doing something generic that's close, you're talking about replicating a design that's currently being sold, and having it produced by someone else.

Not judging, just observing.

Just so the OP isn’t confused…the Milano chips shown here are not clay chips. They are called “china clay” which are plastic that resembles clay and are exponentially cheaper than real clay chips.

The only way you are going custom clay chips is through classic poker chips.com which are expensive. That or buy casino Paulsons and mill out the centers and replace them with custom labels….even more expensive
