Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (79 Viewers)

I think new members show up, buy Tina’s, then leave for good more often than they stay and get hooked. Sure it happens, but not too common.

Probably a testament to how good the Tina’s are. Majority see no reason to go any further. Can’t say I blame them.
I think you’re right. I showed up here to confirm that the Nile chips were a good buy. If I got the message that they were fine, maybe I would have ordered a set and disappeared.

I think there's a mix for sure. With chip pricing increasing as it has, there really isn't a great gateway for folks to get into good chips without a huge investment. Both used and new (CPC/Paulson) has seen large price raises over the past few years.

Sure some if not most Tina buyers might not come back, but we just need that fraction to stick. I also think we might not see the return on investment for a year or two either, and the wider audience/appeal of Tinas is still growing.

Folks can argue that there are good Paulsons, etc that are out there as alternative starters, but from personal experience the last thing I wanted to do as a new chipper was buy a bike tire paulson set, a solid set, etc. Still great options for some, but less mass appeal IMO.

We'll just have to see, but personal experience was:
  • The fuckers are crazy paying these prices. This whole forum is nuts.. I just want to know about Royal Cardrooms vs Majestics which are even too expensive.
  • Ooo... Tinas are nice, but still too much.. but I could use a set.
  • Shit, I love this.. I'll take a few more.
  • Paulsons/CPCs still aren't worth it..
  • OK... I get it. CPC is the best.
  • Fuck me, I caught the paulson bug
Think my path might have been expedited, but would imagine nearly no one can jump straight to the last bullets these days without somewhat similar of a path.

There are for sure levels of insanity. It's just that those of us who have stayed graduated all the listed levels already lol.

Exact same start. We'll see if I ever end up with CPC, but there is no way I'd have bought/relabeled a Paulson set without those goddamn Tinas.

That's the big question: staying power. Many that bought Tinas and left weren't staying anyways, they would've scrammed. There's suckers like me that needed to nibble before biting.

Wtf else would they do?

I started with Tina’s. CPS tourney was my first set, .40 a chip.

I also had over 10,000 china clays from the abc awards .10 a chip sale.

The funny thing? I had to give up on china clays because reds were “rare” and no one would sell theirs. That shoulda been my first “red flag”.

I went from that to raddisons, all the bccs, outposts, lcos, aransas, Cali, non Cali, leaded, unleaded, Tcr sales - everything under the sun Paulson that wasn’t a nagb.

Someone comes for Tina’s…what would they stay for?

I hope they like high end plastics or whatever blah Tcr brings next. Because those IGs and lcos and hsis and Ballys housemolds and worthwhile hotstamps and everything else is completely locked up.

If someone is staying past Tina’s, they’re paying insane costs for cpcs, battling the same 4-5 chippers for top tier $$$$ chips, or finding something to do in the margins like a rat rod set

I’d say unless someone new coming in has $10k+ to blow, just take your Tina’s and move on - spend the time and energy you’d need to socially unearth meaningful chips on something else.

I mean yes I’d say that’s true for majority of us, but Tina’s are so good at the price the next jumps make no sense. We’ve always basically had Tina’s but they were never as cheap as they are currently with people just ordering direct from China or via Justin these days. So no reason to stay.

At least new they seem to be very good. I hear from some regular players about longevity issues but as a noob that buys and leaves you likely don’t even notice any nuances because you never had any real emotional investment to the hobby to begin with.

100.

Yeah, that's fair, I think for the average joe poker player/host - Tinas are the perfect balance of quality, customization, and price point. I think clays are now squarely in luxury territory where the high price is almost a part of the appeal along with exclusivity, history, etc.. but to get that far is going to take a lot of mental gymnastics for folks where to your point before the value difference used to be far clearer.

And in fairness I likely would have been happy with Tinas too and left if it weren't for meeting up live with folks here and then regularly playing with and appreciating their sets more (and in turn Tinas less).

So I think I agree more than I did to start.. Tinas for sure bring some folks in, but they're also now creating a harder justification to walk higher and net/net.. I'm not sure. But definitely things are evolving.

Yeah I’m not saying it’s 100% Tina’s killing it… but they play the biggest % by far currently imo. Other factors contributed such as someone buying up a large majority of the good shit at astronomical prices taking all those chips out of the chipper circulation.

“Renting” used to be super commonplace. You could sell a leaded THC set and it wouldn’t be out of the norm to have the chance to buy it back another day. Not anymore. Not after the price explosion.

I don't think Tinas kill the collector chip hobby in a significant way.

Old age is killing the chip hobby. Tina’s and the move to cheaper/shittier casino chips is preventing sufficient new interest to keep up with the losses.

I chip for my own entertainment. I hope all the chips I own will one day be worthless and meaningless. Good luck to you if you’re counting on a different outcome.

Also, agaves are ugly. I wouldn’t take them if they were free.

If you are on Reddit folk on r/poker have a very different view of home game setups than the folk here.
People are very impressed by Tina’s, a Barrington and semi decent lighting.

Often people can’t fathom spending $2/chip over on the sub. Also I’ve seen people say broad sweeping statements like “Paulson’s are the best but they are $5/chip” and I bite my tongue cause I don’t wanna be the “AcTuAlLy” guy.

Going off that sub poker players are really tight with their luxuries.

I mean it’s never been a big hobby… and likely wouldn’t ever be. Which means it would take less to kill it almost entirely.

(FWIW I like the agaves a lot, the hotstamps preferred. I think the set looks solid together. The required circlej*rking is off putting, but the chips are nice.
Plus I like Mexican food, tequila, and am one of 4 pcfers who can pass for Hispanic. Hotstamp design okay by me!)

How dare you speak ill of rat rod collectors

You guys need a spokesperson. It’s like you and then that one new guy and then banned Lou and festive knight.

It’s a ratrod set. You guys only get to send one delegate and we’ll judge all of you off that on person and set.

I choose Lou’s for quality and potential for violence.

Mine isn’t a full rat rod set, and I’m definitely not volunteering to be spokesperson (of anything  :ROFLMAO:).

I’m stuck on fives. Maybe I can ask for @JeepologyOffroad ’s advice? Thinking either WTC or Golden Nugget HM chips. And then the challenge will be finding them, in good condition and at a decent price.

Have a lot more $1s, but couldn’t find them quick enough for the photo

Think my path might have been expedited, but… I designed more sets than the Tigers and usually don’t stop until each set gets to Rev 23 with color match labels through an impossible to match supply chain.
FYP.

They've been judged.
