We all know that it is well-settled that a hotdog sandwich is, in fact, a sandwich (except for those who refuse to agree). However, as it is now officially autumn, and along with it, cooler weather is upon us, a fella’s thoughts turn to more important matters…like soup.

So, it occurs to me: is chili a soup?

I don't disagree with the stew premise, but this slander that soup isn't a meal by itself is preposterous. Hearty chicken noodle needs no bedfellows.

My friends and I had a knock down drag-em-out argument over this spanning a day at the lake, it came down to ratios and constituents and intention when cooking. Ended with a buddy calling another a "riceless peasant", saving that one for a rainy day.

After much internal debate and extensive research I have concluded chili is a stew.

Although I agree a hearty chicken noodle is both delicious and can be a meal, you cannot put chicken noodle on a 1). Hotdog, 2). Nachos, 3). Hamburger, 4). Burrito (or in), 5). Spaghetti (for our Cincinnati folks).

You can put beef stew over mashed potatoes or over a biscuit. (Therefore also not a “soup”)

I therefore conclude based on the preponderance of evidence that chili must be a stew (that can also be a topping).

As the only state that has declared chili con carne its official dish, I think Texas' declaration that chili is a stew is binding on this debate. The fact non-Texans have adulterated the chili pepper w/ meat concept by watering it down so their pansy palates can handle 15% of the chili's power carries no weight whatsoever.
