Do you take rake when hosting a game? (1 Viewer)

Nope, would never play at a raked game.

Scenario:

You play in a raked game.

Game gets busted, because someone called and tipped off law enforcement (for any reason)

The host is now arrested, and you have a federal subpoena to appear in a federal court.

You’re just a player, along with every other player, which immediately turns into survivor games…

First to help the FBI agent assigned to the case wins.

Your life falls into shambles.

All of you and your friends have told on one another to save yourselves.

Your wife leaves you.

You’re fired.

You’re on the way home from the initial hearing, BAM! Car accident, because you were so depressed by the entire situation and weren’t paying attention.

The car accident left you paralyzed.

Nobody visits you…. In jail. While paralyzed.

Furthermore, your beautiful Paulson are taken, because you let the host who had the raked game use them once. They are now evidence tagged as a “gambling device” and will be auctioned.

And your dog died. From sadness. Because you left.
Wow. My Witness Protection is going way better than that scenario. Damn!

Just curious for those who host games, do you take rake for snacks ans stuff?
Not a rake, but I usually ask players to chip in $10 at the beginning of the night. I order a full box of Jimmy John's subs (that alone is $70) , have chips, salsa, queso, beer, quality bourbon (at least a bottle of eagle rare and weller antique).

It is a fun time that easily costs me $200. Recouping $90ish of that is fine. I don't mind being out the other $110. I usually win multiples of that throughout the night. But at least I get some of it back.

Some raked games are fine, like an online private club. But a random 1/3 or 2/5 home game with a rake? I'll pass.

In my home game, the host asked if anyone want to do tip flip, where there will be no betting. Every player want to participate put in like 5bb. Goes all the way to the river, winner take 60% and host take 40% as tip. Host was dealing too

How can I get an invite? I will happily kick in $30 for a sub and some bourbon. Also, can you please move to Texas...

Haha! I try to be a good host. It's a good group of players. We all know each other and while the games can get large and highly competitive, we're still there to have fun. Some solid food and drink always makes it a good time!

It's "bring your own beer" and we order takeout at the lovejoy residence.
Keeps my expenses to a managable ~$20 for snacks and drinks for the scatterbrains who came unprepared.

I try to provide the best possible poker experience with chips, cards, table and chairs, but I'm buying those mostly for my own benefit and would never charge anyone for it.

So no, I never had to take a rake and don't see a scenario where I ever would.

It's insane that by the 3rd line i was thinking, "I know someone that sounds like this".

So, there’s been a ton of games pop up on my radar in the last year, in my area, so apparently poker games are exploding around here…

But, not in a good way. They’re all raked, and some are now raking $10K+ a month.

Even a local weirdo started a raked game for young college kids.

That said…

Am I wrong for thinking this is all so fucking stupid? I don’t like nor will I play at a raked game for many of the reasons posted in this thread.

It’s just not worth it to me. I host to provide a place for friends to sit and enjoy poker, if I win their money, I’ll surely give it right back the very next game with a dumb river call. It’s fun. No rake. Friendship building and memories is all I’m after.

But I feel like all of these raked local games are gonna bring bad attention, and attract some shenanigans…..

Quick math has the 5 games I know about making $30-$40K a month (NET) in rake alone. And those are just the ones I know about…. It’s probably way more…. I’m sure there’s some nosebleeds in the Lake Martin area with very heavy tables.

I just don’t get it. I don’t like it. It’s bad for home games.

I could be wrong but raking a poker game isn’t likely to get a pass from law enforcement. Regular poker…yes. I had two cops that played in my old game when the legality in my state wasn’t very clear. They didn’t care at all. But take a rake…and you are now basically operating a casino without a license

Sure, I get this and usually agree. Its the difference between a bar and drinking on the porch. The bar could be a great place to go hang out but the owner is taking risks and investing in it and running it like a business. She might want you there, she wants you to have fun and you want to have a place to drink and eat and whatever but also is very clearly making money. That's different than having homies over for beers and pizza.

That's how I separate the raked and home games. They both have their place but very different niches. I'm much more discerning who gets to join my home game but if I was running a game as a business and raking I'd want more people joining and donating. I used to deal for two different raked games and they were fun to be at, we made sure, but we also made sure we were making money while meeting the needs of the local gamblers that didn't want to hoof it to Atlantic City.

Not playing devil's advocate, just speaking to the niche that is raked games. Definitely more likely to be trouble, definitely more likely to attract crime, but fills the need for people who want to play and don't have a place or friends to host, just like a barowner.

You’re 100% correct.

Nothing good will come out of any of these raked games, and one pissed off player can turn into some serious shenanigans, from criminal elements to law enforcement.

I host for the same exact reason that you do. No tips, or beer money, or anything. I host because I enjoy the poker and company.

Like everything in life there is always trade off.....

If you hosting game for friends taking rake is always a no no, however that depends if you only one hosting, how often and if you provide also drinks and food.
If everyone participate thats fine but sometime they brought friends and manners are sometimes questionable.

I am not saying if you need to rake but make some sort of arragments that will not make you feel used....

Yes, once in a while, when I’m asked to host, only up to the amount of money I spent on the food and/or drinks.
If I host on my own no.

This right here. I'm about to put up a building on my property, and 1/3rd of the reason is for hosting poker games. I'd like to host at least once, and maybe even twice a week. Could I justify installing a rake due to the nice, private environment I'll be presenting? Sure, I probably could. But I won't. Because of the potential trouble. My games will be for friends and well vetted friends of friends. No strangers, no high rollers and no whales. Just friends having fun playing poker and sipping whiskey or beer. Not sure yet if I'll provide actual food. If I do, I may well put out an "appreciation jar." Or we'll order and split the bill. But that's way different than a rake. I'm hosting poker because I love to play poker. I'll either make my money on the tables, or I won't.

That is some serious coin, and I can't believe that won't eventually attract some serious attention. Possibly from the cops, or even worse, from some bad element. Way too risky for my blood.

Absolutely all of this - No lies detected.

This is a great point.
I’m noticing some responses from people outside the US. My perspective on this conversation has been mostly legal. It’s definitely illegal to take a rake in the US. States tax the hell out of casinos which is the entire reason then have these laws. In Pennsylvania I think they take 58% of a casinos profit. That’s a high tax bill in the US for anything and the states want all that money.

Is it legal in other country’s to take a poker game?
