Curious on how often most of yall host games…

I’ve been thinking about upgrading my generic chip set, but I haven’t been hosting that consistently. How often/consistent were you hosting games before you started upgrading your set?

Or was it an upgrade your set and you started hosting more?

We play once a week at our house and once a week at another hosts house. Been doing some variation of that for 10+ years now.
Was Omaha at our house and holdem at the others in the beginning but it’s Holdem both places now (moved).

Both places we started with dice chips. I wanted nicer, so after about two years I started buying 13gm slugs. Then The Dark Knight happened and I made some money so I wanted even better. I wanted ceramic Yaks. So that lead me to PCF, then I started improving my sets more, but the other two just stopped at CC Dunes and DDLM’s.

But the game always came first, then as it was established it became easier to get better equipment. And I have a lot of nice chips now.

TIL what Yaks are

Started running home games 2-3 times a month. After almost a year, that led me to purchase better chips that had some meaning to our particular group (custom designed Tinas via the Justin group buy). I was using self-labeled dice chips prior. While those got the job done, the custom Tina chips really classed up the proceedings and are visually impressive (and thus helpful) when having potential new recruits try out the game. Also when moving up in stakes it's incongruous to be using dice chips haha. But as someone else basically said, part of it goes beyond necessity; you love it, so you want something nice.

Hosted a game then immediately wanted chips to encourage me to host more. That lead down a deep dark pcf rabbit hole with lots of chip upgrades along the way. Now I try to host monthly but have skipped a month or two here and there. I don’t mind if I can’t host but still like my chip collection and deciding which set to host with next.

Typically a monthly board game night (last count was like 72 different games that I own) and bi-monthly poker. Also my buddy hosts very inconsistently. Just had a second kid so everything is on pause for a couple months, but should get back to it around December.

My personal opinion: We are talking about a hobby. It does not matter how many games you host. If you feel like you should have a 5,000 chip CPC set for a game you host once a year, then get those chips if you have the money to spare. Nobody will judge you.

Monthly-ish. July and December are tough so usually about 10 times per year.

Twice monthly. I miss games occasionally due to holidays or a shortage of players, but generally get about 20 games in per year.

Weekly cash games for sure, sometimes a couple games a week if there’s a football game or something people want to watch while we play. Never during Chiefs games, as I’m doing one or the other. I’m not trying to host, play and watch a game at the same time. Tournaments maybe every other month and those days usually run multiple table side cash games as tourney breaks down. Super fun, but a little exhausting on the host. A single table cash game requires virtually zero effort on my part at this point beyond making the announcement of time and date and taking down the first 8-9 players who RSVP, hence the regularity.

We have 9 tournaments or cash games that are part of our yearly points series. The wife lets me host 3 of them. A couple of the "road games" my chips (currently Nexgen River Poker Tours in the profile pic) go with me. About 2-3 times a year I'll get an impromptu game that only uses the game room.
When my old roommate started hosting the usually-weekly dealer's choice game that this game evolved into, it was dice chips. I got the RPTs once I moved into this house. Thanks to PCF exposure I'll be ordering a set of Tinas on one of Justin's next GBs (by January) .... then go from there.

8-9 times a year.

I bought my first set of customs before I hosted my first game. It's never too soon to upgrade (and it will never be cheaper to upgrade than it is today).

I host Biweekly a match the stack .25/.50 on Fridays one table of 9 for holdem and sometimes the occasional mixed game on off weeks. I want to move our game up to 1/1 to get rid of frac chips so to do that I may move to only once a month for that to not break the poker economy.

Never be cheaper to upgrade than it is today? Are chips getting more expensive over time?

Even with the tariffs?
Is anything from China really an "upgrade"?

CPC chips have had an annual increase for many years. Second hand Pauslons have gotten ridiculously expensive.

I don't remember a time a chip has gotten cheaper, only new manufacturers producing cheaper products for less. Even China Clay has doubled in the past 10 years.

2004 - weekly $10 NLHE tourneys (Nevada Jacks Skulls)
2006 - started up a post-tourney cash game (Nevada Jacks Mardi Gras)
2007 - everyone liked cash more than tourney so switched to strictly cash (the Mighty Faux Clays!)
2010 - game fizzled out
.
.
.
2018 - started hosting cash again but could only get one together about 4-5 times a year (still Faux Clays)
.
2021 - game became (almost) monthly (CC Royals from Apache)
2022 - now a full table with a wait list every month (CPC Key West chips)
Now - have only missed one month since 2022 (got a set of 43mm Dunes of Arrakis Tinas last month just for something new, my players love 'em!)

Side note; I built my table in 2004 and still use it to this day!

Monthly...sometimes more often. Depends on player's demand. Always looking for new players.

I don’t host much now unfortunately, but usually try to get a game going with friends once every couple months . Back in the day it was every other day lol

I run a weekly tournament league. 8 game seasons. I have boring chips for the weekly games and nicer chips for the Season Championship games. Once per year we have a Tournamnet of Champions and I have a different set for that. I’m going to be adding two “casino night” games in each season and hope to acquire a Tina set for those.

Woah that sounds super fun! Is it like a bar poker league?
