I've been watching the relaunch of the Poker at the Lodge stream and they've come up with something fun that I haven't seen discussed around here yet.

Those of you who watch those live streams like HCL regularly know the stand up game but for those who don't, let me explain the rules in short.

Every player stands up and has to remain standing until he wins a hand. Showdown or bluff, doesn't matter.
The last player standing has to pay each other player a bounty - usually something between 2 or 10 big blinds per player.

The side game usually creates some action and encourages bluffing when the opportunity arrives so that you don't have be the sucker who is standing last.

Doug Polk explained on the stream that the game is very popular with the players but it's tough to film it with everyone being on a different angle and moving around.
So they itroduced the "nit game". Everyone gets a nit button and gets to give the button back to the dealer when they win a hand. Last player with a button pays the bounty.

Little extra piece of that is that they have to show the winning hand, called or not. I like that aspect, makes people open up and prove they're opening up.

Pokergo just ran a 3-day cash game with increasing blinds and a million dollar buyin. 6-handed. Over a couple of days, one guy lost 5 standup games in a row. Crazy unprecedented, and it cost him over a hundred grand.

I’m into this idea (making new/fun buttons) but I will point out that for those hosting home games (which I’m assuming won’t be streamed) - the standing up part of the game really is part of the fun. Having a button in addition to standing up is a bit redundant… having said that, I’m into the idea lol

My poker area isn't very spacious and half of my players are sitting directly against a wall. So just having a button and calling it the nit game seems like the better option for my particular situation. :)

Yeah I think this is a great option as an alternative for sure - just making the point that for those who do have the space, the standing up is quite fun (in my opinion - some players really dislike it!)

Anyone designed a NIT button yet? I’m interested. Sounds like a project for @BonScot!
We do something similar. You can use these as kind of show em chips. It costs double the usual show em price but you get your money back if you guess correctly if your opponent had the hand or was bluffing you.

The problem without standing up for the stand-up game is it removes the "penalty" and one portion of the desire to win a hand (so you can sit back down). Otherwise, it's just a subtle variation on something like the 7-2 game.

Some players can not physically stand that long. Like me.
That's fair and perfectly understandable. I only mention it because without some sort of penalty for not winning a hand while the stand-up game is in progress, there's not a pressing incentive to win a hand.

I'm not sure what it would be, but for a sit-down version, there would need to be something to emulate that otherwise it just becomes a variant on some of the crazy prop bets we see happen otherwise and is not longer the "stand-up game".

This was at first what i was going to say...

...but i know your appartement and that is what makes the Idea great. :ninja: I always hope we play the stand up Game.

I hear what you’re saying, but it just seems odd - playing poker standing up. People either have to keep bending over, or otherwise, pick their cards up off the table. It just seems odd and uncomfortable and for that reason, I’m out.

I'm convinced that the majority of those who are interested in playing the standing game have not yet played it and are just wanting to emulate something they saw or heard about from the poker streams. It's a small minority who actually enjoy and advocate for it.

I am able-bodied and do a lot of voluntary standing. I don't attend poker games to stand while playing — there are other opportunities throughout the night to stretch.
