I see a lot of people with some really nice looking chips and in some cases "upgrading" condition from what appears to be nearly perfect (sharp edges, no fleabits) to even closer to perfect and spending even more money than $5 a chip.

In the situation described above: Do you just admire how they look or do you actually use them?

Just curious...

Majority here play with chips and own them for that purpose. Many of us have multiple sets and on average I’d say a set only gets used a couple times a year, so the wear and tear is pretty minimal. Some sets get squirreled away but often that is not by design but just luck of what gets into play.

I have 3 sets myself. Mixed cash and Empress Joliet cash & Tourney. Mixed set is EX to minty and will probably get used less often. The Empress cash is my beater set as it consists of mostly worn chips, which I don't mind at all. The Tourney set ranges from used to minty from low denoms to high and gets used. In short, I buy chips to use, not to display.

Welcome to the site :)

Use them, otherwise what's the point
I agree. The part I didn't understand is people being super finicky about and spending the money on "mint" chips and then using them anyway. I guess a lot of people have more money than I do!

Not going to own a set of chips unless it can be used! Now I will say there are a few of our "top end" sets that we only plan to felt once or twice a year... mainly for meet ups with other chippers. Most regular poker players have no clue what the difference is between a $.50 chip and a $20 chip... why let those people put the wear n tear on the good ones?

So yes we intend to felt them all, and be very selective for a regular run of the mill game! Own a nice rotation as others have said and it will keep the wear down on your babies!!

Yup, I played them when I had them. I don’t presently own any mint sets because they got too valuable for me to justify me owning them. All of the chips I own now are a bit more worn.

But about wear. You can buy “mint” Paulsons to use at home and they’ll stay “minty” or “mintish” or whatever. When we see casino worn chips, we’re looking at chips that are being used all day every day for like 5 years, give or take. You could host a home game once a month for a few years without putting significant wear on a set of minty Paulsons. So it’s not THAT crazy. It’s not like driving a new car off the lot.

unpopular opinion:
i bought mint chips and didn't really want to use them so i kept them that way

i'm a big fan of chips that have been slightly used, but each to their own!

They don't shuffle very well, it doesn't take very long to knock the "new" off of them. Why not sell them to someone that is willing to pay the "new car price" and get them in play? Get yourself some slightly "broke in" chips and enjoy them. I will never understand "I have owned these chips for years, never played by me!" Then why own them? They look nice on a shelf?

Again I guess this hobby means something different for everyone!

i bought 150 mint paulsons because i'd never owned paulsons before - never even felt any! (this was only about 6 months ago..) and i'm currently selling them having purchased some used and slightly used paulsons to start the set i'm building :)

I love shuffling virgin chips. The sharper the edge the better!

Exactly my point!! Nothing wrong with trying them out, but in the end someone has to destroy the value to get them playable! If you are ok driving a Corvette while the neighbors are washing their Ferraris... let someone else knock the new off!

Some people will always like mint chips, the majority find out pretty quickly that slightly used are much better for playing.

Just my 2 cents there! I don't want to cut my dinner steak or my fingers on poker chips, not a fan of bike tires either... but there is a happy medium.

hadn't heard 'bike tires' before haha, funniest thing i heard was "i don't like chips covered in hooker juice" in reference to some very used 1s

Where is this $3000 set of minty THC chips... I will take them even with the cheesy Dorito finger sauce on them! Lol

Bike Tires = rounded chips that no longer stand on edge... and no, I am not interested in playing with any chips that have hooker Juice on them! Clean your chips people!! Lol

I answer

Do you go to the VIP room in a strip club and tell the stripper to keep her clothes on?!?

Of course you play them. Poker chips were never manufactured to be a display item. They came into existence to play the game we all love.

Don’t own any remotely expensive chips yet, but I imagine when I do I’d prefer to buy used simply because I’d be so scared of scuffing up new chips. I usually buy used bikes, golf clubs for this same reason
