Needed some cheaper bourbon for old fashioneds. You guys talk about these a lot so let’s try them

I actually poured the WTRB neat

In the less than $50 bracket, it’s really hard to beat Rare Breed. The only possible competitor (an awesome one at that) might be the Knob Creek store picks, especially the ones around 14/15 years old.

I’ve found no better under $50 bourbon than the rare breed. I love that it is available too, and not some rare bullshit somebody bought them all unicorn.

I heard they did away with those so they can market now by age. Could be wrong but that way they can get $100/ for those now

This is why I am stocking up on them. Only have 12 bottles of 14+ year store picks and I would like 18 more. Even on the secondary they can be had for around $60 bucks which is still a great value for a 15 year old 120 proof bourbon.

Straight up KC 15 year retail is around $90 and 12 year is about $65. Those store picks are a bargain at that price if they taste good at all.

I tasted the 15 and 12 (only one sample of the 15) and all my store picks were better than the above. To my taste obviously.

However, as @Forty4 wrote, they (well aged picks) have been harder to find lately since they are bottling the 15 and 12 now.

Decisions...decisions. :)

Help me pick out my next 4 bottles. Here is what is on my radar that I have not yet tried:
  • Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch
  • Larceny
  • Bernheim Small Batch
  • Woodford Reserve Distiller Select
  • Wilderness Trail Single Barrel
  • Sazerac Rye/18
  • EH Taylor
  • Rebel Yell 10 yr
  • Eagle rare/double/17
Others I need to try??

Tried this out today. Initial thoughts: I don't like Jim Beam products (yet), especially for $125

That one is a bit odd, Jim. It has brown rice distillate in it. I haven’t try it myself to be fair. All the Little Books are experimental and do not really fit the JB profile.

Have you tried the Knob Creek single barrel (store pick) or Bookers?

Knob Creek yes, solid. No on the Bookers

Where are you getting BTAC?!

Are you guys getting a decent price on Weller? I live in a rural area and have never seen it lower than 200-300 bucks roughly. I’ve always wanted to try it And was just curious if anybody here was able to buy it closer to regular cost.

I got a107 and sr at retail. I paid secondary for the 12 though

I haven’t opened my ardbeg 10 yet. I got it as a gift and promised my friend I’d open it with him. Then pandemic happened and I haven’t been able to see him. He told me to just open it but I feel bad. I did buy the udgaildail and it is fantastic. Gift me your notes on the 10
I bought a bottle of Ardbeg 10 several years ago, tried it twice, and strongly disliked it. IIRC, I thought it tasted like a tire fire, and not in a good way. So it worked its way to the back of my bar and sat there.

A couple of months ago, I dusted it off and poured a little, figuring that I would just gift it to a friend. To my surprise, it was delicious!

I'm pretty sure that my palette has changed, not the whisky. I'm having one now, and it's sweet, creamy and a little salty at first before smashing you in the head with that big smoke. 10/10 will finish this bottle and buy again. ;)

I tried Maker’s Mark Cask Strength recently... Liked it pretty well. Sometimes Makers can be too rich/syrupy; this version seemed more complex. Maybe I was just in the right frame of mind. 110 proof iirc
I bought my first bottle of MM recently and probably will not finish it. It is way too sweet/syrupy for me. I had MM Private Select earlier this year and liked it a lot more.

Wild Turkey 101 is one of my daily drinkers. I keep seeing Rare Breed in the store but always end up grabbing something different. I'm getting it next time!

If you liked the 101, you’ll love Rare Bread.

$26.95 for the SR here

you can get the 12 year for $300 secondary market

I got a bottle of WSR, WA107, and W12 for $320 shipped on secondary. Don’t buy from stores that sell over secondary. Try the FB bourbon secondary groups. Most times they’re cheaper than stores that markup.

I've only heard bitter and funky about this...thoughts?
I've read mixed reviews on it. I'm really excited to hear your opinion!

So I opened the bottle last night and had about 3oz.

To me, it was not bitter or funky. I liked it. More than the Small Batch tbh, although I haven't had that one in a while. It is oakier for sure, to a good amount for me, not overly oaky. That give it a darker tone but also dampens the fruitier character of the Small Batch. As I said I like the Toasted Barrel more. The only thing that bugged me a little was that the finish was too short, pleasant but short. Can't remember if the Small Batch had this short of a finish. Don't have a regular bottle of it, only a store pick.

No surprise I find the Barrel Proof to be a lot better personaly.
