Out here for two weeks so figured I’d post some pictures of the fun!

Landed yesterday after a two hour delay!

First absolutely beautiful thing! Full double rainbow on my drive from Denver to Cheyenne! Pulled off to the side of the road to grab a picture

So much to do in town! Definitely want to go back for a second day during my trip. Tomorrow I am going on a train ride through the mountains. Looking forward to that.

If you're down near Colorado Springs, I hear the cog train up Pike's Peak is running again -- and it's a great trip to take.

I love Fort Collins and norther Colorado. A close family friend went to grad school at CSU and I'd bug him for a couple weeks in the summer to avoid the desert heat and get to spend some unhurried time up in that part of the state.

Check out Social in Old Town Fort Collins. Fantastic cocktails in the basement of the building above. Proper speakeasy vibe with only a clock and small with the name at the top of a flight of stairs going down to the proper entrance.

Well, if you're going pub crawling in Ft. Collins, I'd recommend our favorites: New Belgium Brewing and Coopersmith's (practically next door to Social). Both full of great brews, far beyond Fat Tire and other mainstream stuff.

Yeah I stopped at Fat Tire for my drink. Definitely want to head back and check out more spots. I’m going to write down all these place to go. Keep the recommendations coming!

Enjoy Fat Tire in CO while you're there. One of my favorites. But for some reason, the crap they send to the East Coast has a weird taste to it.

Oh shoot I forgot you used to live out here right? If you think of anything that I “need to do” out here let me know! I’m driving all over the place.

If you're jonesing for a game (a really neat experience) and a nice drive in the mountains all in the same day, go to Blackhawk/Central City, and then to Breckenridge. BH / CC has a really cool mining town atmosphere with a ton of small saloon like casinos. I tell all my poker peeps that it is a hidden gem that most people are unaware even exists.

Breckenridge will be AWESOME for biking and hiking this time of year. Molly and I used to spend a week there nearly every year.

Red Rocks: if you have a chance to catch a concert at Red Rocks, you will have an awesome time no matter what the music is.

Actually, do BH / CC and Breckenridge on different days. Instead, head out on 285 toward Buena Vista. The Aspen trees are probably starting to change color.

Go:
285 to Buena Vista. There will be multiple areas to stop and see the Aspens.
Then take 24 from Buena Vista to Leadville
Then Leadville to Breckenridge.

It will be an all day driving event, but probably some of the prettiest scenery in all of CO.

Thank Kevin! I’ll have to do some research. I am heading towards Guanella Pass road which is sort of in that direction. There is a separate train ride in Georgetown that I am doing today as well! Seems like I’m heading the right way.

Oh yeah, you are definitely headed in the right direction. Also, if you drive, do not go all the way to Bueana Vista. Just to Fairplay, and then up to Breckenridge.

I'm guessing Black Hawk is already in your plans. :cool

Uh-oh, just saw SASC's post -- oh well. I'll leave this here anyway.

Pro tip: In case you're a fan of the TV show, don't bother making a pilgrimage to South Park / Fairplay just for that -- it's not much more than a bunch of trailers and a mediocre brewery at a remote highway intersection.

That back way up to Breckenridge is very nice, though, and includes driving over a 14K pass, great for a photo op.

PS: Second Red Rocks -- a great natural amphitheater.

Just white knuckle drive it like a normal person...

Nothing like anxiety all the way to the top of the mountain!

It's paved all the way now, so much of the excitement is gone.

And the most fun is definitely coming down! That's why they have a mandatory stop halfway down, where a guy (ranger?) checks your brakes to make sure you're still safe, or forces you to pull off the road and wait a while.

A manual transmission is definitely the way to go. "Wow -- you haven't used your brakes much at all!" :cool

Agreed. Had Fat Tire and Sunshine Wheat in Ft Collins back in the ‘90s. For years, I yearned to get it on the east coast.
It is not as I remember.

Now I have a train from here that I am going to get on! Only an hour round trip so pretty quick. Not sure where it goes.
There’s a train out to Glenwood Springs that is long but very scenic. Nice natural hot springs.
Are you headed to Jackson Hole, WY? Amazing scenery with the Teton mountains in the backdrop. Great day hiking.
