Happened to me because of customs. Just got my first set, 2nd being made now, and about to order my third... customs are the only way to go unless it’s a set that just completely blows me away.
Like many posted before...it comes & goes like the tides...
Many are hooked for life but they all know the ups & downs
Some clear our their collections, leave...come back with a lot of remorse and start building again
Some leave to never been seen again
Some leave and pop up after a while and are glad they hold on to their set(s)
Some (i call them the blessed ones) buy one or two nice sets and stick to those
Many ways to approach this hobby/addiction...during the time you have been among us, you have been pushing the 'turbo boost' button non-stop.
Tanks are empty and need some time to recoup...but rest assured, it's just a fase (I went through this more then once)
I found back fun with cards, milling and hunting down cheap chips to build something nice (far away from the nosebleeds)
Should you decide to sell...please think about team Europe first

Several hundred thousand choice chips going into a museum-like collection at premium prices over a relatively short time has accelerated a slow trend which was already brewing.
When I did my annual cabinet cleanout a month or so ago, putting about 800 miscellaneous racks and barrels chips up for (dibs) sale at roughly my original cost or below, they were snapped up in a matter of hours—most within minutes. I probably could have auctioned them for 50%-100% more. This tells me that there is tons of pent up demand.
Certainly I am finding it almost impossible to finish a spotted THC set, even when lowering my expectations. I do not think it would have been such a struggle two years ago. In one recent auction I wound up bidding at least 50% more than I’d planned, and still was not even the underbidder to the winner.
Without the multiple TCR sales during this period, things would have been even tighter, I suspect. And those have been predominantly RHCs.
This new chip economy hasn’t diminished my enthusiasm for the hobby, but it has made it more frustrating. And prolonged frustration might eventually lead to diminished interest eventually.

Thank you Thomas! I do still very much enjoy hanging out with all the great people here and will for sure continue to. I just wished I still was as excited about collecting as I used to be.

we’re all with ya there bud!!! I just made a few purchases and one more big strike came my way and wasn’t really that excited!! Off season. I have been enjoying many chip restoration projects that have been looming for months though and that’s been really relaxing and fulfilling! Being on the injured list has been good for my chips! I’ll be listing one last HUGE set or maybe 2 soon here and then it’s back to real life and hopefully a lot of motor home time! Hang in there bud!! Also thinking of hosting a Midwest meetup if things go better with this virus BS. WE SHALL SEE!!

Yea, I've come in and out, went through many cycles of binges and purges over the last 16 years or so. After I go away for a while (for other pursuits), I would come back wanting to just sell off some chips to make room, and then wind up being sucked back in and buying more than I sell.

I agree with all of this except the part about supply. Supply is at an all time high (unless you consider those years when you could order your own Paulsons, TRKs, or BCCs) - I mean, the chip room has personally put over 2 million chips into circulation in the past couple of years, and there are always a bunch of group buys and now you have guys shaking every tree to find chips, and actually finding them! Supply is actually huge right down.
But demand is INSANE.
Personally, I’ve stopped giving a F. I have chips that make me happy, partly because I have some cool chips, partly because I’ve adjusted my expectations.
The hoarding aspect of this hobby always bothered me in the background, but when it was guys who have been collecting chips since Jesus was a freshman, how could I complain about that? Now it’s them, plus a new waive of enthusiastic chippers with very deep pockets. It’ll get you frustrated and disillusioned if you focus on what other people have.
I dunno, it’s tough to say it shouldn’t be about the chips, when we’re on a site that’s literally all about the chips. But I think you just have to host some games, maybe make some customs you can afford, and enjoy poker.
I, like many, have been in a real funk since COVID started. I had just ordered a CPC and was looking forward to starting a new game in a new house. But no. Lots of things suck and we are in a collective funk, globally. And when when the light in the tunnel turned out to be another train… well, crap.
Chips and the crazy antics on this forum have helped. And while I swore I wouldn’t buy a second cash set, I did, mostly because I’m overly optimistic on my chances of getting some of my old group back together. And I both really love designing chips (it’s art) and have come to appreciate the simplicity of old chips.
Personally, I’m glad Paulson prices are outrageous- they kept me from breaking down and getting a casino set.
I almost jumped in, and am totally glad I didn’t.
But yeah, breaks are good, and hopefully we find absence makes the heart grow fonder.
And to answer your question: nothing is wrong with you. We’re humans living in a nutty world. I hope you find your bit of happiness- we could all use more of that.

I've been a PCFer for over two years now and, once you start ticking the things you want off your list, I think it's a hobby you can easily — and quickly — fall out of love with.
For me, I don't even think it's been about not being able to host games regularly due to the pandemic. Unless you're able to dedicate large amounts of time hunting for new, rare or obsolete chips (and I've had my fair share of great, very rewarding finds), then seeing the same old ones being sold day in, day out on here just becomes... well... boring, doesn't it?
I hate to be blunt, but there's nothing really new being discussed or talked about nowadays, is there? Logging onto here every day is like running on a hamster wheel nowadays.
If it wasn't for the people I talk to regularly — or the prospect of being able to go to meetups — then I think I'd be long gone.

It's really easy to get bored with this hobby when there's hardly any sets for sale, and only ridiculous auctions for barrels and racks.
It fucking sucks right now. I'm glad I have a couple of sets, and would love to have more, but I don't want to spend all my life tracking down barrels of chips.

I was trying to build up some enthusiasm for a new CPC set but I just can't do it. Even those cost a bomb and QC isn't what it used to be.

I feel like I am in a similar situation. I am not a collector by nature, and more of a minimalist as a matter of fact. I have a compulsion to get rid of or sell things that I don’t use. But I do like to experience new things. So I have owned a wide variety of types of chips. And since I was done with that, now I am on to full customs. But once I receive my CPC sets I don’t anticipate thinking about chips much more. I don’t see myself having any desire to buy and sell other chips. I feel like I have basically gotten close to a completed and finished journey and can move on at some point. The only thing that I haven’t tried are mixed sets, but I don’t think that excites me enough to get involved with that.
But I do enjoy the community and expect to keep hanging out here and discussing poker and figuring out how to improve the games I host. I also see myself helping some other people with their customs or do some design projects. Or if some other interesting custom opportunities pop up I may get involved.

I've checked off most of these (some sets and collections tick off multiple boxes)
- ex-casino, fantasy, and custom
- compression clay, ceramic, hybrid ceramic, and PIMP
- Paulson, CPC, TRK, Bud Jones, B&G
- tourney, cash, heads up
- Nevada and Cali colour progressions
- 39mm, 43mm, plaques
- poker, blackjack, roulette
- solid, spotted, inlaid, shape inlaid, stamped
Probably some other variables that I forgot, but you get the idea.
