Sitting Out
This is the very first iteration of a WSOP computer game published 33 years ago!
If you watch the 1991 or 1992 WSOP on poker go and a few later years episodes as well, you’ll hear them discussing it.
Later this was sold to another company and published on cd-rom through late 90s.
Several years ago, I got to interview Jack McClelland and discuss this game that came out while he worked with WSOP at Binions.
Jack was quick to remember this game mostly due to the horrible experience he had with it. He and Jim Albricht were two of the major financiers for it and were gonna make a nice cash if it was a success. Unfortunately that wasn’t the plan. Jack told me about the coder they hired and flew out to vegas to work on it…but who preferred drinking and playing cash games vs working on the project. When they finally got it passed the finish line and released, they had no marketing plan or connections to get the game sold in retail shops. All marketing was done through Binions and the wsop filmings and that wasn’t very fast. Finally they got an offer to sell it to another software company and Jack was thrilled to get his exact investment back. Lots of labor to break even.
This game is hilarious. You land at the airport with $5K. Next step, find a ride to Binions by cab or limo. After that, you can check in and get your hotel room. Go play and try to win your $10K buy in. Take the elevator up to the rooftop steak house. I mean this game is so funny.
You can still download and play it today and I have gotten to a few years back. Another fun piece of forgotten poker history here.
