I’ve decided that @Timmah just posted this question (on a forum dedicated to poker chips) to get everyone riled up and it worked…
Next up, he will be going to a watch forum and arguing about how his $10 Casio is better and more accurate than anything else mechanical and that it doesn’t make any sense for people to spend more than that or own more than one watch.

The problem with 1 set to cover both cash and tourney is that a chip from the tournament may wind up in the cash game. Not intentionally, of course. There have been numerous accounts of long-time friends caught (or suspected of) cheating, but sure, yours will never intentionally cheat
. Still, a chip could get lost under a cup or napkin, fall on the floor and later recovered, or whatever. It can happen, and it could cost you $5 or $25 bucks.So we spend a couple grand buying different sets for cash and tournament.
It's not a hobby for someone with limited "spare" cash. But then, poker isn't really a game for someone with limited spare cash.

I have different tournament sets. Each plays with a different structure. Only a true master can win on every set, as different tournament structures (should) alter how you play the tournament. Having different sets (instead of one set and continually changing structures) gives players the feeling of travelling to different casinos, with the convenience of only going to one place.
And as others have mentioned, different sets from different manufacturers. Now if a friend is contemplating buying a set, they know they can come to my house and get the feel of a dozen different types of chips. Get some play time on them, which is much better than buying a small stack of samples.
Finally, I have 9 different setups of cards (in rotation, many more out of rotation). May as well have different chips too.

I only have one set. Not sure why anyone has more than one. Mine is just a hodgepodge of Jack Cincy, dunes CC, cards mold, Tropicana Evansville, etc.
They all share the same cabinet therefor just one set, right?
