Why do people have multiple chips sets? (4 Viewers)

I’ve decided that @Timmah just posted this question (on a forum dedicated to poker chips) to get everyone riled up and it worked…

Next up, he will be going to a watch forum and arguing about how his $10 Casio is better and more accurate than anything else mechanical and that it doesn’t make any sense for people to spend more than that or own more than one watch.

If I only wanted one cash and tournament set I woulda named them Dr Quinn and Medicine Woman :p

What about IHC and FHC? Need a solid and spotted version of each.

I also like having an oversized inlay RHC set too. A lot of great options there. For hot stamp sets you can also do RHC, THC, spotted and solid.

Don't limit your options so much.
Now YOU are just talking CRAZY.....lol

Because you need one set of each;
THC
THC Leaded
THC Fantasy
THC customs
RHC
RHC leaded
RHC customs
TRK
TRK Fantasy
Ceramics
Tina’s
House mold
Limit set
Hot Stamp set
Mixed Set

And that’s just cash sets!
This each in Vegas and Cali colors

I just purchased 1700 Nevada Jacks. $.25 - $5000. Enough for tournament games and our dealer choice cash games.

The problem with 1 set to cover both cash and tourney is that a chip from the tournament may wind up in the cash game. Not intentionally, of course. There have been numerous accounts of long-time friends caught (or suspected of) cheating, but sure, yours will never intentionally cheat  . Still, a chip could get lost under a cup or napkin, fall on the floor and later recovered, or whatever. It can happen, and it could cost you $5 or $25 bucks.

So we spend a couple grand buying different sets for cash and tournament.

It's not a hobby for someone with limited "spare" cash. But then, poker isn't really a game for someone with limited spare cash.

I have different tournament sets. Each plays with a different structure. Only a true master can win on every set, as different tournament structures (should) alter how you play the tournament. Having different sets (instead of one set and continually changing structures) gives players the feeling of travelling to different casinos, with the convenience of only going to one place.

And as others have mentioned, different sets from different manufacturers. Now if a friend is contemplating buying a set, they know they can come to my house and get the feel of a dozen different types of chips. Get some play time on them, which is much better than buying a small stack of samples.

Finally, I have 9 different setups of cards (in rotation, many more out of rotation). May as well have different chips too.

I hoped once that some friends of mine could get interested in nice chips, so that I wouldn't have to own all the kinds of chips I would like to play with. They could buy some other nice sets, I thought.
Wrong! "You 're the addict @sshole; you buy, we play" has been the general reaction. :)

So I’ve seen several posts talking about how people have multiple sets of chips. I understand having a cash set and a tournament set… or one set that can cover both. But what is the purpose of having more than one set of each? I see people posting that they have 5 or as many as 10 tournament sets. They also state that some sets have never been felted. I personally don’t see the point of having chips you don’t use. Convince me otherwise…
This sounds oddly like my wife... You are not related are you?
