I run a home game tournament (rebuy) and had a couple people question when I should color up the 100s.

Here is my current structure:
25/50
50/100
75/150
150/300
200/400
(Break: Color Up, remove 25s and 50s)
300/600
500/1000
700/1400
(Break: Color Up, remove 100s)
1000/2000
1500/3000
2000/4000
3000/6000

*I also round up when coloring up for simplicity. If you have 100 chip left, you get a 500 chip.

The couple people the questioned me coloring up before 1000/2000 get started said "what if I what to be 2300 or 2800?" I just said that sounded stupid, haha. Tournaments I have played in a casino removed the 100s before 1k/2k blinds, I think. Just want to get a quick confirmation from a couple people here, not looking to make this a big thread.

You're good. If the break works better after 1k/2k level for some reason like dinner, sure, do it then instead.

Color up a chip as soon as it's no longer needed.

You can do a soft color during the last level they're needed. In your case, that's the 700/1400 level. What I mean by that is, if one player has a large collection of them (say 3600), you could buy up 2000 for two 1k chips early, possibly saving you some time during the full color up.

You can also ask the big stack at each table to buy up all the 100s at the end of that level to also speed up the color up. So if a player has 600 in hundos, the big stack tosses them a 500 chip and take the 100s. Then you color up the big stack, and buy enough 500s from him to pay each of the remaining players that have lose 100s.

So your definition of no longer needed only applies to paying the blinds? Because making preflop raises using only 1/2 big blind increments does kinda suck.

Once the blinds reach a point that makes the chip obsolete, it should be removed from play as soon as possible.
