When did this hobby change (2 Viewers)

“Negotiating a bit” on a market price is way different from chiseling another PCFer for a last few bucks when they are already giving you a fantastic deal.

I’m talking, say, if I offer some chips for which I could get $300 on eBay to PCF at $250; the buyer asks if I can do better, and I knock it down even further to $225; and then they say, could you do $220?

WTF. What should I say — no, but I can do $222.95? Just to say I haggled and didn’t cave? So he can counter at $221.50? Not worth my time. And someone who does that is probably going to be the type of buyer who also forgets to do their payment as F&F.

That’s not about smart, sensible haggling. It’s about just trying to get one more thing over on a seller who is already trying to do the right thing for other chippers.

When this happens, I sometimes just cancel the deal—sorry, decided to keep these. And move on. Not because one big blind at 2/5 means a damn thing to me. But because it’s a lame way to do business here.

Cancelling the deal is what you should do. Buyers like that are almost always going to be a pain in the ass. Consider it a gift that they let you know they were ridiculous before you exchanged cash.

I agree, I can't stand it when people try to haggle for the most part. But one thing I've learned from living in an extremely diverse community (white people are a minority here) is that this is often just a cultural difference. In many cultures, it is very much the expectation for any and all transactions, particularly of this type. And to not budge on price would be considered rude to them. They expect that you started out high on your price in the listing to make room for negotiations. To them it's strange that you'd be starting with your minimum price already. I'll often add words like "firm price" or "not negotiable" to my Craigslist ads for this reason. That or I'll inflate the price. I've learned to let it roll off my back for the most part, in an attempt to respect other people's cultures. But if you're haggling with me on Craigslist like mad, then you show up and you're a white dude in a Tesla??? "Sorry, I just sold it. Someone else beat you to it."

Before I read the rest of your post (dealing with craigslist and such), I was like wtf does diversity have to do with our haggling? We a bunch of middle aged white dudes!

buyer who also forgets to do their payment as F&F.

This is the one that drives me absolutely nuts. I usually then give people to option to send another payment for the difference or I send the $ back as this has happened way too many times to be an accident. Then when they don't want to send anymore and I send the money back inevitably they ask why I've sent less than they sent me.

No, we're not
Did you just assume everyone's gender and age?
Yes I did. Young adulthood is from 18-40. I’d go out on a limb and say we have very few 20 year olds (although there’s some), so generally if you aren’t middle aged or past, it seems most are approaching it in their early to mid thirties.

And I get not everyone’s white, sheesh. Just those that I’ve seen at the one meetup I was at and everyone that posts pictures and selfies and what not on here  :ROFLMAO:

Seriously, Travis??? Just nothing but a bunch of evil, white, no good, Midwestern rednecks, right?

I get that you don’t like him and that’s fine, but that’s just a little dramatic for a red arrow, yeah? I do not get the same inferences you do, I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to assume a group get together in Indiana might be a little whiter than one in the Bay Area, right?

I’m more offended at the middle aged white dude in a Tesla comment....as a middle aged white dude who would appreciate some ludicrous mode speed in my life I’m deeply offended. ;)

What else was the arrow pointed at Indiana supposed to mean???? Ever been to Indy? South Bend? I have. Diversity all over there. When did being white become so evil?

I didn’t really want to chime in here but I’ve experienced the same exact frustrating experience when trying to sell on this forum and I’m glad someone brought it up because to me it is not far off from when people play the part of price police on supposed “flippers”. I list at below my cost or at “market price” and then receive dms from members trying to nickel and dime me. At the end of the day it’s a classified section and it’s a free market, but I find it ironic that a lot of the people I see complaining about opportunists are also the ones that end up in my dms to trying to squeeze me out of a few extra bucks. That being said, I think the buying and selling aspect of this site is perfectly fine and prices should be set at whatever anyone wants as long as someone isn’t trying to run a legitimate scam. At the end of the day, we are all adults and if someone wants to list a set a dice chips for $15k and another person wants to buy them, that’s between the buyer and seller and is cool with me as long as there is no misrepresentation going on.

As far as the OP, this forum is what you make of it. I’ve met some great people in real life thanks to this place. It’s best not to take posts here too seriously. As a member of other hobby forums, I can tell you that these types of “what happened to this place” threads always pop up from time to time and these places will change as the membership grows.

Yeah I remember you selling some sick TRK’s for much cheaper than what you paid...

I don’t mind price negotiating at all. If chips are priced right, there usually doesn’t need to be any haggling. I’ve been the haggled and haggler. Both on several occasions. I’ve also gladly paid what sellers are asking because the chips were priced right, or it’s something I really wanted. Sometimes, there are chips I desperately want, but they are listed so much higher than what they should be that I don’t even bother. And then I watch as they get bumped daily, without a price drop, for the next five months. To me, that’s far more annoying than anyone trying to negotiate a bit.

“Priced right” is just what your (and other’s, not singling you out personally) opinion is. Yes there are chips that keep getting bumped, like my cheap as hell $200/rack Jack 25 secondary’s. I just won’t go lower than that no matter what, because I just DGAF about the money at that point.

On the flip side (pun intended), you may think BTP’s are overpriced but BOOM it’s gone in a day (see last week).

No, I haven’t been there and yeah, you’re right, those two places are probably much more diverse than most of Indiana. I just don’t get the negative connotation you’re getting from it. I took it as Travis making a joke, and I don’t think he said anything about being white in Indiana equal to being evil.

I don’t think it’s as serious as you’re taking it is all I’m saying.

I think you need a hobby to occupy all your spare time and make use of your wild imagination and creative thinking... How about designing custom poker chips?

I was gonna answer this, but realized what I was writing wasn’t helpful. So I’ll just leave it at these two, Travis was making a joke “at my expense”, and it was funny.

Second, everyone’s great and it doesn’t matter, but Jesus yes of course everyone’s white in a mid west farm country state. Outside of Indianapolis (one of the countries biggest cities) and south bend (home to notre dame) (and maybe Gary/Fort Wayne/Bloomington/Anderson), most cities are going to be around 98% white. Why we think Travis is a douchebag for pointing this out in a joke is beyond me.

It’s beyond you because you’ve been around since breakfast. Travis and I have quite a history. Some of which, like a lot of things you interject yourself in, you know nothing about.

Cool. Makes sense. Thanks for imparting the sordid and toxic history between you two (which is before my time!) publicly into Travis and my jokes with each other here (which is the present).

But hey, holding onto the past and lashing out at others is your prerogative. I truly hope you find peace here in this community, and can move on from whatever’s tying you down.

It's an ancient good luck symbol. I refuse to let it's use by nefarious forces during a dark period of mankind's history diminish the original intended use.
I just learned something today. Thank you!

Good for you for thinking that. However, let’s be real. Everyone knows that symbol world wide for its negative connotation as was its intended use in that post as an attempt at humor.

I think what this forum needs is a dedicated fight club. Someone just start a thread and post some nonsense (or sense) and shortly someone will come along and disagree with an internet stranger. Then someone else will come along and disagree with the disagreement (but a minute, hyper specific part) and boom you got a 10 pager on your hands.

This happens to me on Craigslist ALOT!

I advertise an item. I get a few emails, and then BOOM! The lowball...

I find the best way to deal with pests like this, is reply with an even higher price than originally posted. That gets them irate and they don't reply much after that...

Relates to one of my favorite internetisms I’ve ever heard: If you want to get an answer to a question from the internet don’t ask the question but rather post a wrong answer to your question.
