So I saw an auction go up for PCA $1s, but I didn't want to start posting in it and take away it's momentum. I've always been curious why PCA chips are all THC except for the $1 chip which is RHC. As far as I know this is the only casino that people go crazy for that has this dichotomy.

Now let's step back a minute... The PCA chips are some of my favorite chips of all time. The $0.50 chips being perhaps my favorite frac chip ever. Ever. EVER!

And I know that many people here share the opinion that the PCA chips are very nice. I also know that many people here would rather grind up a leaded chip and snort it rather than mixing a THC and an RHC in the same set.

So, anyone have a bead on this one?

For any of you lucky chippers who've got a PCA set, does it bother you at all?

Edit: I love RHC chips. I think that the $1 PCAs are gorgeous. I'm just wondering what the deal is...

It was a deal breaker for lots of people when they first hit the market, but most seem to have gotten over it! I remember that the chip room ended up blowing them out at one point and the secondary $1’s were around $50/rack.
Daaaaaamn! A blowout on PCA chips. BearMetal is always late to the party.

I could imagine it would be a deal-breaker, especially considering what many people here have said about mixing molds. But again, it doesn't seem like it comes up very often but it's just so strange that they decided to change the mold for just the $1 chip.

RHCs are cheaper, so since they ordered so many 1s it was more economical to make them RHC than THC.
and normally that's what I would think, except that in this case they do have a 50-cent chip that is THC. They must have had a boatload (see what I did there) of fracs...

I’ll tell you what, I hate RHCs, but I think leaded RHCs with a textured inlay is a slightly different beast.
I wouldn’t kick them out of bed.

^^ this ^^

and all valid points @monkeydog

Also...the pri & sec ones are some of the best RHC's out there.
More then a few PCA fans created secondary $1 on THC.

Yep, I saw that. And honestly if the chip mixing bothered me that much, I could absolutely see myself doing that as well.

Something I didn't know is that these PCA $1 chips were leaded and textured RHCs. That's pretty awesome.

They didn’t order many fracs, so it wasn’t cost prohibitive to make them THC.

It's part of the mystique. Someone much smarter than me once said "Perfect is the enemy of good enough"

If I had my way I'd replace the secondary ones with exc condition/NM primary ones, but finding that many racks of them isn't easy.
But yes, they ordered more 1s than anything and RHC are less expensive.

Any more info probably best answerd by @Thomacetti @Chile85 or @SuckoutKing

We speculated A LOT about it...don't think anything was 100%

- security
- cost
- throwing a chippers harvesting obstruction ;)
This was actually on the back of my mine. Would people harvest less with mixed molds? Obviously we did not...

That's one theory. But it wouldn't explain why the Cleveland Horseshoe decided to blow extra cash on their $1s
Ah-ha!!! The reverse scenario! Yeah, doesn't make sense why they would go THC for JUST the $1s at extra expense.

Yeah, so with those numbers, if they wanted to save money, why not also make the 50c RHC. It's weird to have only the $1 different.

PCA is the Mona Lisa of the chipworld

It's certainly a theory. Could be true, probably isn't. But it was stated very confidently as if it were the precise reason.

92K $1 chips (pri & sec) vs 75K $5 alone...and 180K THC total...they should have gone with another accountant...not mix RHC with THC for a minimal cost saving ;)
It’s probably a mix of that, security, and some other factors that you can guess at. I don’t think we’ll ever really have a definitive answer, and I probably shouldn’t have stated it that way.

I think that could have been a matter of security to avoid the counterfeiting story that happened at the Green Valley ranch from repeating itself. I’ve seen it in almost all horseshoe casinos, and there are a bunch of casinos in Vegas that I’ve seen use THC for their snappers, ones, and fives occassionally, but RHC for everything else.
