Not my game, so be honest. I was invited to this event and I'm perplexed at this Flex type structure...

Harvest Hold’em – $20 flex tournament

Buy-in/Initial entry
• $20 for 7500 chips before start time – Extra 10 BB for being on time!
• $20 for 7000 chips after start time
• Late entry period ends with the first break (1 hour in to the game)

Re-buy/Top-up
• $5 for every 2000 chips
• You can top-up to 8,000 chips max. No need to bust out.
• Re-buys/top-ups are allowed until the second break.
All money goes in to the prize pool!

Seems fun...but lots of work for the host.

I’d definitely play though.

Seems reasonable to me, although if I busted, I'd be lobbying hard to buy four $5 top-ups (T8000) vs a single $20 T7000 re-buy.

Like if I was chip leader with T100,000 then I could use my 4 top ups to get to T108,000

Seems like a ton of work for the host... the people he plays with are degens of the highest order and have lots of disposable income.. many of whom work for a nearby tech conglomerate.

To be honest, this game looks to be a shit show, lol... People who play his 1/1 cash game (rebuys up to 75% of big stack), often gets 5k on the table in short order... 200 max initial buyin... Sounds like a fun cash game... but a weird tourney.

This same host (when I first started playing with him) had his rebuy period last the entire tourney, including when in the money... That was weird. At least he doesn't do that anymore :)

Not that much work, really. I've ran many tournament events with limited (even incremental) top-off options.

Gotta disagree with ya, at least based on the structure itself. Can't speak to the degen factor.

That's fair Dave. It's probably some biases I have about the player base, which I could see having the host topping them off (or rebuying) after each hand. Its a fun crew, so maybe I'll have to check this event out. :)

Definitely interesting. How many players usually play?

My cardroom does something similar, but with no top-up restriction. 10k starting stack and during the rebuy period, first two hours, anyone with 10k or below can rebuy for $20-$100 in $20 increments, 10,000 in chips for every $20. A player could rebuy after every hand if they were short enough. For your friend's game, he should designate someone at each table to sell the rebuy/top-up chips. Otherwise, it would create a lot of extra work. Hopefully the blinds structure is able to handle all of the extra chips, because this can easily turn into a 6-8 hour tournament depending on rebuys.

The 7000 is listed as part of the buy-in/initial entry section, not the separate rebuy section, so I'd say that this is a Yep.

$40 to start gets you 14,500 in chips plus your bonus. Once you get below 8,000 you can top up back to 8,000.

Pretty sure the intent is to top off to the max 8K at any time. Not go above it.

Think this needs some clarification.

I read it to say if you arrive on time, your $20 initial buy in gets you 7500 in chips (this includes the 10 BB bonus - so game starts at 25/50)
If you arrive after start time, your $20 initial buy in gets you 7000 in chips (no bonus).
You can't start with 14500 and can't join after the first break.

Re-buy/Top-up
• $5 for every 2000 chips
• You can top-up to 8,000 chips max. No need to bust out.
• Re-buys/top-ups are allowed until the second break.
All money goes in to the prize pool!

Not quite sure if this means you can add up to 8000 chips regardless of how many chips you already have on the table, or if you can top up your stack until you hit 8000 total in front of you.

Not sure the confusion...? A top off (up), by definition, allows you to top off back "up" to the max allowed buyin. Am I missing something?

I don't think you are reading that right.

It's one or the other depending on when you arrive.

For your $20 you get:

EITHER

7500 chips (if you arrive) before start time – Extra 10 BB for being on time!

OR

7000 chips (if you arrive) after start time (you don't get the 500 bonus because you are late)

The allowed buy in is below 8000.. so doesn't quite match up.
Think my confusion lies in the ambiguity.
So you can only top up to 8000 chips in total in front of you and can only top up if at 6000 chips or less.

I don’t see any issues. Seems like a lot of work but the prize pool will add up quickly.

It normally more than one table?

I feel you’d enjoy the structure, worth attending and seeing anyways. Especially, if you enjoy the group.

Well, the host canceled his event (not enough interest), so I decided to host a game myself last minute. I’m sure I’ll blog about it into the Fat Tire blog. Should be fun. ;)

Agree with @Alex Lundstrum I would keep it as-is except the initial buy-in would be $20 gets 8500 in chips early or $20 gets you 8000 in chips after start time. Keep the $5 gets you 2000 add on.
