Been carrying a folding 404 Buck for years. Nothing fancy, but super durable and keeps an edge.
Great value. I think I paid about $15 (25 years ago?)

An old roommate of mine was a knife collector. Aside from the katanas, his black Rothco 3260 was my favorite.

I don’t miss having to scan the couch for stray blades every time I sit down.
 
Over the last few years I’ve picked up a few knives, Spyderco and Benchmade being my favorites. I’ll try to remember to post some pics after work today, off the top of my head this is what I have:

Benchmade Adamas
Benchmade 531
Benchmade mini grip
Spyderco PM2
Spyderco Delica
Spyderco Dragonfly (2)
Kershaw Leek (the wife has one too)
Kershaw Cryo
Leatherman Surge (2)

Also have a few fixed blades, a machete, couple of axes, and 5 or 6 guns. Tavor X95 is the gun on the buy list
 
i'm thinking of buying my dad an EDC knife for the garage and camp, he spends a lot of time in the woods, and the garage. but hes not a hunter. anyone have any recommendations for a solid edc knife to start him off with?
 
Great knife right there, you really can't go wrong.

The S35VM is a high vanadium carbide steel that is extremely wear resistant - however it is also more challenging to sharpen than some others and requires more expensive tools to properly do so. I personally prefer a steel that's a little more beginner-friendly, if not quite as tough.

I also prefer G-10 scales, it is a wonderful handle material. You might consider splurging on that upgrade. If I were buying an "entry-level" Spyderco EDC right now I'd be looking for a Delica (VG-10) in G-10. However that is not so easy to find. The Native5 is a bit higher-end knife and also much prettier IMO.

Funny, when I first saw, i need a knife as a gift, I immediately thought of the native. Sexy, functional, and sharp. I can’t believe the pricing on those FRN versions... I purchased two as gifts for friends a few years back (for helping me move): and paid around $25 on sale each. That said, I second the G10 version, and they are worth every penny they are build better, and feel like a life long family heirloom, vs a plastic pocket knife. Can’t got wrong with the native imho, but the Manix (I own the orig bigger version, is one of my EDC knives. It’s a solid knife for camping (actually can chop wood with it). I’d try eBay , but haven’t priced them out lately. I’d shop around. As deals can be had. Spyderco was a daily search for me on eBay for a few years... then also look at several knife sale sites online. No clue what these are anymore, but they often had deals running.

Knife from an unknown manufacturer. Blade is not marked, other it’s made in Brazil.. being around a lot of knives, you recognize the junk vs quality, and this knife is quality. It locks up tight, has no play in the blade, and holds a very sharp edge. It’s well made, so it made my list. I have tons of junker knives I won’t take pics of and post...

This knife was handed down to me by my stepdad. No clue where he got it. He was a Chicago detective for 20 years, so I always imagined he snagged it off some crime lord or street criminal... lol. In Chicago (back in the day) you didn’t process confiscated weapons (into evidence). You repurposed them for personal use...

So all that being said, if you were gonna buy the best knife of the manix, native, or dragonfly. Which would you buy lol
 
No picture of it, but the knife I keep in the junk drawer and use all the time is a Leatherman Wave. It's a great knife and tool. Two blades, smooth and serrated, plus I use the screwdrivers, pliers, and scissors a lot. In high school I worked at a camping/surplus store that sold a ton of knives, and I always liked the Wave better than the regular Leatherman because the outside of the handle is smooth when you're using the pliers instead of having those metal ridges digging into your hands. I never bought one though, since they were pricey. After I got married, one day I was vacuuming out my wife's car that she inherited from her parents, and I found this Wave under the front seat. I asked her why the hell she was hiding like a $70 knife in there, and she said she thought her dad had gotten as a promo deal one time and put it in the car for emergencies. I rescued it from the car and it's been in frequent use for almost 20 years now.

For me and my use I would buy the manix. For a special gift, I would buy the native in G10 handle. For a normal gift, that will still be greatly appreciated, I would just buy a regular native. The G 10 handle makes them pricey.

Can always check out YouTube for reviews like this one.

ok before I pull the trigger on this new Spyderco Native5 G10 on amazon, besides eBay, is there anywhere else I should be looking to get a better price on this? I'll suck it up and pay it no doubt, but since I can wait a couple days to order I thought I'll see if I can save a few chip funds
its $188 on amazon.ca

Apparently the WiFi system I’m using won’t let me search knife shops. I’d google the knife and see where it’s cheapest.

Not sure if you'll find a cheaper price but you can check warriors and wonders they carry spyderco and are located in Canada.

My EDC is the Spyderco Ladybug 3. I think it's the smallest one they make, the bug series notwithstanding. So small, it fits perfectly in the coin pocket of jeans.

Made in Japan, VG10 steel, and I paid $25 a few years ago. It's my favorite EDC but sometimes would like something a bit bigger. It's just so small and handy and you forget you're carrying it.

I also have some older Puma knives, will post pics when I get home.

Wondering what people use to sharpen, I will start new thread on that.

No need to start a new thread. This thread is about edges, and sharpening them certainly qualifies.

I use a spyderco sharp maker. I'll post some pics soon.

Includes 30 and 40 degree bevel setups and fine and course stones..

I also use Sharkmaker. I like the results but it's not good at re-profilng. I bought the diamond rods and they helped alot. Also considering stones from Congresstools.

I've been eyeing the KME for a while but not sure if I want to spend that much.
 
Most of my blades are scalpel sharp still... Haven't sharpened anything for some time. Probably a good idea to break out the sharp maker and give some of my reg carry knives a once over.

IMHO, trying to profile a blade with anything other than a belt sander... Lol.
 
I attached some 60 grit paper to the rods and re-profiled my kitchen Henckels by continuous circular motion on each side until the sharpie lines I drew on the edge disappeared. It was a bit of work but not too bad..

Re-profiled at 30 and finished with micro bevel at 40

Old stand by is a Swiss Army.

In my opinion a tactical folder style knife for a juvenile is not the most appropriate, but since you are family, you would best be able to judge

Agree with Trihonda 100%.

Pulling out a knife is cool for a kid. Just showing it off. That can result in trouble.

A Victorinox Swiss Army knife will last a lifetime, has more uses than "just a knife", and quietly teaches knife lessons (always carry it, keep it clean and sharp, never pull it in anger).

Even though he is family, you have to think like he may have a "bad" side. I cannot count the number of times that a "sweet/harmless/innocent" kid was involved in a fight that required paramedics. Don't be the one that equipped a kid to make fighting the first option.
