So…….. I played my very first poker tournament yesterday in Cherokee, NC. It was a $140.00 buy in with a $4000.00 prize. Things DID NOT go my way. Rather miserable, but a learning experience. I chased the first two hands…… not that I had bad hands, just not better than the other guy. I won 1 split pot…… because I only had 100 with 2 Aces…. First person out in the first round!! I took my walk of shame …… I didn’t buy back in…….. found me a slot machine to lick my wounds and drowned my sorrows.

I don’t play tournaments as I can’t handle the rejection and likely 98% failure rate. I’d rather have unlimited cash rebuys and pretend I’m a winning player.

You’re braver than I am. Congrats on your first one.
 
Starting is the first big step. Now it's finding ways to always improve and grow your game. I have buddies who were big time cash game players and have migrated to the tournament scene as their main focus. They say the studying, the grinding and the euphoria of a big win is unmatched and keeps them coming back for more. Go get em!

I don't have the focus or patience for tournaments so I'm still a cash game only player :)
 
Cash games are more fun for us because we play as a way to relax and hang out at the end of a week. When you bust out you just rebuy and keep playing! Racking up a big win for bragging points or trying to get back to even becomes a side goal :) Our crew is great because the big winner for the last game will pay for dinner at our next game so the money goes back into the crew in an indirect way.
 
When I first entered a "poker room" at the casino, it was so intimidating. Back then Limit was the only thing available basically. I started playing the Monday $20 tourneys and had a blast, I became very comfortable very fast. Moved onto the cash games that were "spread limit" 1-4-4-8. 2/4 blinds and between 1 & 4 pre and the flop then between 4 & 8 turn and river. You could also only buy $500 every 2 hours. It wasn't long at all until I moved up to 20/40 & 30/60.

Congrats on your tourney win and enjoy the cash sessions when you start, the intimidating part goes away after a couple sessions !
 
Nothing to it, the important part of this story is that you finished your first live tournament and grabbed that achievement. Under your belt now. Congratulations!

Now here's the secret to modern tournament success for the "pros": unlimited re-entries. :rolleyes:

 
Congrats on getting out there to play, it’s an intimidating first step to play in a live tournament at a casino! Just keep going and get a couple more under your belt :)

Funny thing, I hear people say that and I scratch my head, because I don’t have the patience to play cash. Tournaments have a clock and increasing blinds that force you to get involved. With cash games, you’re generally much better off waiting for good cards, and I definitely don’t have the patience for that.

This is an interesting comment because I think from the perspective of a cash game player, tournaments are is where I would imagine waiting for a good hand before before getting involved. In cash games, you can always rebuy so there's more ability to splash around and play more wide. Also with a cash game, you can quit when you want and go home. Once you are past the rebuy phase of a tournament, if you bust you're done. Also there's no payout until you get down to the money which depending on the size of the tournament can take what feels like an eternity. I can grind a 5-6 hour cash game ok, but I can't do 8 hours of tournament or worst, multiple day tournaments just in hope of getting a payout.

If we are talking about small sit and go tournaments sure I can handle those but only in moderation.

You can do everything right in poker in lose. In a tourney, it takes just one bs hand after grinding and playing perfect for hours just to go busto and walk away with nothing to show for it. In a single cash game, you can rebuy and typically prove variance out. I feel like tournament variance is generally better defined over multiple tournaments, not just a single game.

No wonder you hate them. You are doing it wrong. Cards only have a small part to do with it. It’s where you really have to play poker to win.

You yourself said it, cash games you just throw money at until you win a pot and hope it’s enough to make you even. I don’t hate cash games at all, but honestly a bot could play it - oh wait, they do!
