Slugged poker chip comparison (1 Viewer)

I would be grateful for some advice on poker chips please.
I live in the U.K. and we are pretty limited for good poker chips.
I am looking for a reasonable priced home use set and keep coming back to this set of 'Birch and crown' design.
Can anyone tell me how they compare generally in quality to the popular 'Dice and crown' design?

What do you consider "reasonably priced"? How big a set are you looking for - what's your budget?

Do you have any links to the 'Birch and Crown' chips you're talking about? ... they look the same as in this thread. (Those are too dark/too much black for my tastes but some like them).

The topset is the 'Birch and crown Redtooth 500' costing £99 from E-bay U.K., they are the set I am interested in.
My only concern is how do they compare to popular dice chips (on the right) which I own?
The Redtooth set is the right size and price for me.
Ideally, I would like a set of ceramic, but they are too expensive to import and U.K. choices are limited.

What is important to you regarding poker chips? In other words, what do you value the most? Feel? Sound? Color or edge spots? Price?

Pretty much anything is an upgrade to dice/crown chips. But that doesn't mean that the replacements are quality chips, or even a good value for the price.

~20c per chip is not a pricing bracket where quality chips make appearances. But you can get some pretty decent stuff for 30c-40c, and well-worth the extra cost imo.

You’re asking a disinterested question for most of us. Honestly the answer is no thanks.
Both sets are the same to most of us.

The ones you listed are a 100 bucks, if you don’t care about the money then get them, if 100 bucks is substantial then I would suggest the China clays.

That’s all off the cuff, share some info, what is your budget, what games do you play, how many players what stakes do you want to play, cash or tournament?

If you are itching for a new set, looking at Amazon UK I guess the Outlaws would be my pick. A bit more expensive and I’ve never owned any, but apparently they are decent value for what they are.

However, we have a lot of members in the UK who may be willing to guide you in finding a decent budget China clay or Tina ceramic that would be much better and still in the same price point.

Edit: The mix of chips per denomination/color is likely not going be good. Buying in increments of 25 will allow you to get the mix you need.

Thanks for the advice,
yes the outlaws are a great looking set but I am a bit cautious about ordering as it says the supplier is from the U.S. that would mean incurring added customs / VAT costs.

Outlaws are great for the price. Just picked up a set about a month ago and have used them a few times. Only negative thing I’ve noticed is some color shading differences between some of the same denominations of chips. Namely 25c chip. Lighter brown and a dark brown between rolls

Are the similarly priced Monte Carlo chips on amazon etc of similar quality? I think some Monte Carlos come with a sticker in the middle... which is seems the Outlaws do not. Any others of similar quality/price to Outlaws out there?

I’ve played in games with slugged chips such as Monte Carlos and can’t stand them. They are too heavy—shuffling them becomes a drag—and they decelop a sticky feel after even a little use.

If I had to choose between cheap slugged chips and dice chips, it would be a hard call. Dice chips are considered the absolute bottom of the barrel here, but I actually might pick them if forced to make a choice.

Monte Carlos, Crown Casino, and Outlaws/Monaco/Lucky Horseshoe (all seem to be the same material), are all decent options. Yes, they are a bit heavy, and can be a little slippery, but they're perfectly suitable for a home game among friends. Most home game players will feel like chips with an actual denomination on them are a huge upgrade. Some of the sluggers stink, particularly the Poker Knights/Showdown, and any sets where all the chips have the same spot color, such as the ones with all black in your OP.
