Situation at homegame (4 Viewers)

And once he slammed my chips once, he would be invited to fuck right off and stand in the corner until he bought me a case of Fresca to appease the poker gods.

lol I'm adding FROASITC to my hosting vocab....

Surprisingly, nobody said anything about the different exotic waters…… different squirrels prefer different water….. give them an inch they take a mile.

This is mandatory reading for anyone considering hosting a poker game....

Sounds to me like the experienced player needs to do a bit of growing up, and accept adjusting his game as needed.

Assuming you don't allow straddles because you don't want the game to play bigger, I don't like the dark bets as it obviously has the same effect.

I put a lot of effort into maintaining a sustainable game by communicating the stakes, expected win/loss amounts, etc. so my players (mostly noobs) know what they're getting into. When people ask to straddle I don't allow it and explain why. If home-piss wanted to dark bet all night I'd say no and explain why.

On the other hand, if my game is curated to the degens, experienced players, or randoms, bring it all on...

I don’t think the blind UTG raises were an issue at all, this player complained only about the 3bets, right? And that’s probably only because he really wanted to play pots IP with those two loose cannons, maybe even 3bet light himself, but because of player positions @Eriks beat him to the punch every time… :ROFLMAO:

I'm not saying host did anything wrong. And I'm not defending this tantrum guy. And I'm not defending a no straddle rule either.
That said, when there's a rule against straddles, and one guy starts raising blind 5x every time he's UTG, that's not perfect behavior either, and may require a response from the host at some point.
I think everybody is focusing too much on the baby chip slammer, because he's an easy target. Nobody has anything to say about the guy who's obviously skirting the no straddle rule? He's just sort of flaunting his will against the rules of the game, and nobody has a single thing to say about that?

"We don't do straddles here"
"Eff you, I'm gonna 5x it every time, blind, and you can't stop me"
Nobody has anything to say about that?
I agree with everyone that a blind raise is not the same as a straddle, but still @upNdown has a point. If a UTG looks at his/her cards and raises to 25 and it gets to me on the button, I will prob just flat small pocket pairs, suited connectors, suited broadways and such. If that 25 is dark though and I’m facing two random cards, I’ll take the same range and 3-bet it. So it DOES artifically increase the size of the game. Whether that 25 is a live straddle or not doesn’t really matter.

People screw up. All the time. Some people buy Fresca, some people buy super diamonds, some folks let their anger get away from them.*

If you can, give him a call or chat in person. Give him a chance to explain what got him upset, and perhaps he’ll realized or admit his behavior was wrong. Share that his behavior and chip slamming is not something you want at the game. See what happens. Give him another chance.

The world could use more understanding and forgiveness.

*Still not selling my massive super diamonds set for anything more than the price of shipping, so stop asking. Will split.

I likely would have, if his approach would have been anything along the lines of: ”hey, sorry about last time, I was in a bad mood. Btw I felt the blind raises were inappropriate considering that the objective of the game was to keep it at 5/5 and make it fun for everyone, amateur or not. Maybe next time you could consider saying something about it”.

Rather than: [not at all addressing, much less apologizing for pissy behavior and chip abuse] accusing me, the host, for not running the game the way HE thinks I should run it and that I now have lost him as player in my game (that’s how he put it).

The more I think about it, the more he annoys me. Fuck him, I’ll find other players

i wonder if we have frescha in Australia? from what ive read its either great or not.

so much to consider. thanks everyone.

I do alternate and host a 1/2 game as well. He definitely can afford it though. It’s not the first time I’ve seen him cranky when losing but this was on a new level.
There's probably more to it than this, but some guys get tilted simply when the game goes against their plan even the slightest. I don't love the play before you, but it's not really wrong and you adjusted appropriately. He did not.

My great aunts (imagine gray old ladies in those gawdy ‘’70s one-piece bathing suits) use to drink Fresca and jug red wine, on beach days. I think they invented wine coolers.

My guess is he was very card dead and the few times he picked up a playable hand he either lost to a better one or was facing the dark raise + big 3-bet with something like pocket fives.

We’ve all been there where seemingly everything goes against you at the table. Poker sure isn’t very fun those times but an experienced player should be able to not let such nights bother them and still be nice at the table, or at the very least not unpleasant.

Not sure I get the Madison Ave thought process in the 70s, but this gives you an idea.

I have checked with my players and no one thought the occational big raises were an issue.
That's important to consider.

I can’t ban dark raises, but I guess I can just ask players to refrain from it.
That's correct, you can. Which effectively bans it. That's also important to understand - it's your game and you can run it any way you please. If you decide that dark raises are bad for the game, make it clear to the players who do it that continuing to do it will get them uninvited. Don't leave it out there as a vague guideline; be straight-up and crystal clear with your players.

Bear in mind that if you do this, those players might quit.

Sometimes you can't please everyone, and you'll have to decide who will be happy and stay vs. who will be upset and quit. But you should always run the kind of game that you enjoy playing in.

Which I feel he should have done if he thought they were such a big issue.
He should have, but it's not unreasonable for people to be upset and yet not say anything about it. People aren't perfect machines, not even in Sweden. :)

Thoughts?

TL;DR

Op hosts 5/5 game with some restrictions.
Two players start raising in the dark.
Op as a result start 3-betting those light.
Another player gets upset and doesn’t wanna play in OP’s game anymore.
The first thing you'll need to do is decide whether you want to continue to allow those two players to continue to raise in the dark.

If not, then have a discussion with them, encourage them to stop, let them know they won't get invited back if they don't stop, and try to persuade them to keep coming to your games and enjoying themselves even without doing blind raises. And be prepared for them to stop coming.

If so, then have a discussion with the other player, encourage him to put up with the blind raises, make sure he knows that it's actually a losing play for the raisers and so is profitable for him as a good player, and try to persuade him to keep coming to your games and enjoying himself even with having to face occasional blind raises. And be prepared for him to stop coming (and probably to stop bringing his other friends).

---

If it were me, I'd ask the two players to stop inflating the stakes by blind raising. I'm sensitive to the stakes changing and want to protect my players. But that's me. You should do what feels right to you.

Haha, you’re right. People who are unhappy with stakes or something else about the game will generally not speak up, but rather just stop coming. Especially if they’re casual/amateur players.

And that’s something I was thinking too. I recently played in a casino $1/2 game. I bought in for $160 (short, but playable) and sat down to find out that this game allowed a straddle from any position. Weird. So 95% of the hands were straddles for $5 - that’s not exactly the $1/2 game that I thought I could play with 80 bigs.
There was a woman at the table who was constantly bitching about the straddles. Like literally every time, she complained. It was two guys doing most of the straddling and I’m sure her complaining only encouraged them to do it more.
Now, normally I’m fine with straddles. But I didn’t realize these would be coming every hand, the way they were. So I didn’t like it at all. But of course I didn’t complain. Complaining is not only annoying, but it shows exploitability.

TL; DR - right, don’t assume that people are happy just because they’re not complaining

I’m fine with straddles too as long as they’re an occasional spice. If some people straddle and double straddle pretty much every hand then maybe the stakes aren’t right for them.
