I've had this happen on a lighter Level... But this last three months... I been getting sucked out in with some big pots. My confidence is low, and I'm playing so damn scared I'm folding top pair when I hit with ace king . I was at the Toledo Ohio Hollywood casino back in mid jan. I bought in for 600 , the table was stacked about 3_450 a stack so I wanted to be about even or above the rest. One guy had about 830 or so in front of him. As the night progressed , I played a suited connector 7&8spades... I raised to 25 dollars... EVERYONE Folded to the big stack who popped me 25. Ok I'm thinking no prob, he's got pocket AA or KK or low pockets ... So I call ... Flop comes 4H...6s...5d... I hit the nut straight on the flop... I'm not afraid of the flush so I bet out 100 ... Little under the pot bet... He shoves all in... So now I'm convinced about my therory of his hole cards ... He either hit trips or wired big and is protecting his hand... So I call... I'm about half assed happy to see him flip over pocket 5s ... He's crushed but has outs... He's sick looking... And says wow what a flop... I'm still not celebrating... Turn is a king of spades... And the river................ 4 of diamonds .... Ehhhhhhhhhhhh.... @_#$$&@_@&#-#-... I just can't win ... I'm in with the best ... And destroyed... all I can do is give money away... I'm devastated here lately.

So grossssss!! I just had my AA cracked by 56 in our annual tourney

His cards don't matter at this point. He's shoving into you, and you have the nuts. There is no more thought required here.

Yes, it's a bad beat. Did you get it in good? Yes. Could you control the run out? No. I understand losing sucks but this is part of the game. Embrace the variance. It's what makes poker the game that it is.

If you're playing above your bankroll perhaps move down where big losses don't hurt as much.

I don't have any less Games around here .... Pretty much 1-2 everywhere.. maybe I messed up by buying to much?

Buying in deeper will allow you to capitalize more when you play for stacks. Had your nuts held up, which they will do 65% of the time here, you will win more when you buy in for $600 vs when you buy in for $200. However, it will increase the variance knowing your swings, won't be more frequent, but they'll be worth more since you have more in front of you to win or lose.

I think buying in for $200 at a $1/$2 game is fine regardless how deep everyone is. 100bb is plenty.

Any bar tourneys where you can meet people who might have a home game?

Thinking about starting my own place

Yes, embrace variance. No reason to be sick or devastated here. Poker isn’t about winning and losing, so much as its about making the right decisions. If you make the right decisions (odds are in your favor), then in the long run your play will be profitable. I recently busted a big tourney (to the only guy out of 60 ppl who had me covered) when I got him to put in most of his chips with AJ on a J92 board. I had 99 and was 98.5% to win the hand, but the turn and river were J...A. It was gross, but I recognize playing with ppl who are willing to get it in with 2% equity is a good thing. I played it right, he got lucky. Good poker. I left smiling, not upset.

This isn’t meant to be overly critical, but you’re in a stage many players go through. You mentioned playing scared, and clearly don’t fully understand variance yet, but this will pass as you play more, and gain more experience. It’s an exciting time though. I’d suggest studying up a bit. Watch some online training videos, talk to some trusted poker buddies about hands you encounter, etc.. this will take time, be patient. Enjoy the journey. Post pics along the way :). We like pics.

Damn, yeah I get it. Sucks for sure but there is always another game.

I think it important to have a feel for how “way ahead” or “way behind” you actually are... and just how big a 65% favorite is or isn’t. Yeah, you are going to win 65% of the time... but you are going to lose 35% of the time. You need to expect it and trust the math and long term. If these normal losses are tilting you, perhaps you need to work on that... or play smaller.

Last summer was brutal. Had 5 straight losing sessions in a row. Every session was similar to the hands in this video. Variance is a bitch. I had 3 folks that would magnify variance on a logarithmic scale at the table, never fold and river rat me everytime.

Not sure what stakes you are playing but you need to play through. Everyone goes on a heater and everyone is going to run into the time they cannot catch a break. You must play through the variance and make make sure your bankroll is at the point that you can play through the variance.
If you start steaming you start making bad decisions. Remember that when a 20 to 1 draws out on you that you continue playing because if you are playing the odds you come put ahead in the long run every time!

Good Luck and hang in there

Totally true and well said, in the long term you will be a winning player

Your expected value of this decision was far into the positive. I encourage you to find out what the +ev was in this spot and then reflect on how much you can expect to make in this situation in the future. As Shaggy said though, a 2:1 means that a third of the time that board will pair/quads and you'll bust the hand out, which is not that uncommon! At the end of the day this was a classic cooler, no way either of you were getting away from the hand post flop. What position were you sitting in here for this hand, and what position was the vilian? Let's take a look at your pre-flop decision a little more..

Yesterday I got into a hand in the BB, playing 1/3 NL with a $450+ stack. Action limps around to me, and I check my A2o. Flop comes AA2, action limps to me again, I bet $30, villain raises to $70, I 3b to $170, villain 4b jams $450 eff... I snap call, I’m up against AJo, turn is a jack... $900 pot. “Nice hand”. Rebuy. Variance. Blech.
