Retire in North Carolina ... poker wasteland? (4 Viewers)

Alright, I'll kick it off:

F: Denver. So hawt right now.
M: Richmond. My home, and I am an east coaster....and since you eliminated Wilmington.
K: Dallas. That place blows.

Are you planning on living in the city itself, or within the larger metro area? What other characteristics/offerings are you looking for besides access to a major airport that will make travel easy?

If you're considering Texas, why not look into San Antonio? Every time that I've been there I've loved it. It's cheaper than Dallas, it has its own unique culture, and it likely has all of the big city amenities that you want, but without the same sprawl/congestion as Dallas/FTW

Probably not in the middle of the city because I tend to like more space. Other than easy access to a large airport, we are looking for a mix of outdoor and cultural activities, and good food and drink. Access to poker and/or a casino are considerations for me. Good weather and non-punitive taxes are a must.

We thought about San Antonio, but it seemed like a third choice behind Dallas and Austin (where we have family). I’ve never spent any time there.

Charlotte is a pretty good choice. I lived in NC for a while (on the Atlantic Coast) and always enjoyed Charlotte. I saw you posted about the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area as well. Have you been to Asheville yet?

Yes. We liked Asheville, but my wife was a little put off by the horde of bachelorette parties that were going on while we were there. It seemed like the tourists outnumbered everyone else. Seemed like a great small city to visit, but we’d rather live in Charlotte.

@CraigT78 Any idea if the poker licensing issue that TCH Dallas is running into will be a widespread long term issue for other cardrooms as well?
https://dfw.cbslocal.com/2022/01/20/city-dallas-revoking-poker-room-permits-months-approving/

Is it because the casinos in Oklahoma are close enough that they see poker rooms as a threat?
It's always going to be an issue in Dallas. Austin and other areas, not as much.

We are all waiting to see if one of the surrounding cities pick up the TCH. Richardson, Addison, Carrollton, or Arlington are all possible. The only issue is the residents all take the "Not in my back yard" stance. We've had several card rooms not open because of resident petitions.

No poker in Nashville.

Well... I might know a guy... I think he can get you in on a game... :whistling:
Hey poker zombie, I am looking for a 1/2 or 1/3 game in nashville. Im from NC and will be there from this wednesday to saturday for a concert, any chance I could give you a video call or FaceTime to confirm my identity so that I can play some poker in nashville this week?

For stakes that large, I just go to a casino (Indiana/Mississippi/North Carolina). I'm sure there are underground games that run around here, but that's not my crowd.

I think my wife and I have pretty much settled on east of the Mississippi (that really narrows it down, right?). And after driving through the great state of Virginia for the @Seeking Alpha Social Club meetup, I have to say I’m considering other options. Maybe Richmond, Charlottesville (never been there), Fredericksburg or even some place closer to DC. North Carolina and Sarasota are still on the short list.

-Charlottesville is a college town with all the goods and bads that go with one. It's a tad isolated, but nestled against the Shenandoah National Park if you are into the outdoors. Tons of cool places close by....like breweries and small ski slopes. Traffic isnt too bad except on game days, right on I64.

-Richmond is a weird and cool city with good suburbs, but I wouldnt want to live inside Richmond proper. I live just outside Richmond and am very happy. I can get in and get out of the city with no issues. Richmond traffic is easy, we have 2 interstates and a bypass....even at 5 the traffic is nothing in comparison. We have live poker for now....it's odd, but we do have a card room. Plenty of underground games too. Check out Ashland...just in between Richmond and Fredricksburg for a cool small town close by the city and interstate, they call it "The center of the universe". Two hours by train to DC and you don't have to worry about the obnoxiously bad traffic.

-Sadly, anything north of Ashland will get you smack into the worst traffic I have ever experienced. DC just sucks because it is so hard to get around. I would NEVER live there. Fredricksburg used to be pretty cool, but DC sprawl has swallowed it up. Kevin lives in the sticks, but he used to pay for it with an awful commute. He might feel different, but I just couldnt do it.

Come down and give it a visit! For cool Virginia towns, I would check out the ones you mentioned, plus Ashland, Lexington, and Roanoke.

Would be awesome to have you "local"
At least I would get practice getting my butt kicked, heck I might even improve my poker skillz
Your game is pretty solid I enjoy time at the table learning by watching and avoiding getting into big hands with you lol

Going to check out a few of the higher ranked places on our list the next few months. Richmond in a few weeks, Raleigh Durham in October. Probably Charlotte around Labor Day. A work colleague of mine has a house on Lake Keowee in SC (near Greenville) so we’ll probably check that out too. Might pair that with a condo in Atlanta, who knows.

You may want to check out the Lake Norman area just north of Charlotte.

7 pages is a lot and its not mentioned on the first page.

WHEN is this retirement? Are you scoping out places for 10 years from now? Buying a house now in preparation for later retirement and using it as a vacation spot for now? Or a pending/near future retirement and place to live?

I would throw my hat in for Indiana. To date, I would say it's been my favorite place to live from everywhere we've lived/traveled.

Reason being that we lived in one of the more wealthy areas, yet our house was our first family starter home at $390k (nowadays about $530ish). So the price is right. Fishers/Carmel/Westfield/etc. are all FAR removed from the riff raff, yet you also happen to be 25 minutes from the 15th largest city in the US. A huge + was for me was being able to avoid politics and have that be a front and center part of our schools/work/lives, we could avoid it for the most part.

In any of those cities you have incredible areas for outdoor exercise, with trails and public entities going all the way straight downtown (a great bike ride there and back). They have a nice little food undercurrent going, much like Columbus, whatever you like you'll be able to find. Solid zoo/museums/art galleries/etc., as well as regular farmers markets and such.

You have major sports teams, colleges, high end shopping, etc. all within reach. Now that winters don't exist, weather is pretty fricken fantastic. You still get seasons and leave changes, but no drastic summer/winter. Several large lakes to drop into, including Geist which is under 20 minutes away from all those locations and you can dock there.

If you like "space", you're about 5 minutes from the country. Go 10 minutes East of Fishers or north of Carmel and buy yourself a house on a substantial plot of land. Local ordinance and government are loose to allow for outbuildings, croppings, pole barns, etc.

Township and County for all of these locations are very well endowed, meaning streets, events, etc. are all kept up fantastically. You'll hit a pothole driving down into Indy, but not anywhere near your home. Kplisch is down the road for huge concerts, tons of various venues around.

Last but not least, your pretty dead center so all your flights to FL and NY and CA for meetups aren't bad.

Carmel is regularly listed as one of the best, safest, etc. places to live in the US with, I think, Fishers joining it now.

I think it might be worth a quick looksee if it's an option.

In-laws live in Greenville SC area and I’ve been on a couple of those lakes around there. Lakes are quite beautiful and Greenville is a pretty cool city IMO. I like SC, it’s got a nice laid back feel to it. And I felt Greenville was just modern enough.

That is actually right near the top of our list. Home prices have really gone crazy the last couple of years though. If that's the choice, we may rent for a couple of years.
