Retire in North Carolina ... poker wasteland? (4 Viewers)

I’ve always liked Arizona. How are the housing prices? More importantly, is there any water out there?
There is not. It's a big reason for our move to Charlotte. AZ is at the bottom of the totem pole on water rights as well so it's going to be a problem.

Gilbert and some other communities have been good about stockpiling water supplies in underground aquifers...worst case water will get more expensive, it’s not going to dry up and become uninhabitable.

Housing prices have been fucking insane — but people are saying that they could fall 40% or more in the next 12-18 months as rates go up and there are fewer buyers. This town and some of the surrounding ones will be almost fully built out in the next 3-4 years so property will be at a premium at that point.

If you moved here, I’d rent both to wait for the market to drop and determine exactly where you want to live. We stayed in a hotel for 60 days when we first moved here (which looking back was kinda crazy after we had sold our house in MA but I had a ton of Marriott points).

Two of the towns I wanted to live in ended up being crossed off our list and the one I didn’t think we’d like we loved, so definitely good to live wherever you go for a while and experience it before making the home purchase commitment.

It’s a massively huge prohibitive problem for farmers. Less so for the immediate PHX area. I don’t think there will be much farming here in 10 years (more lane for developers, I guess).

That's a fair point. It is too big of a city to let any major rights issues sink the greater metro area. I was always shocked at how cheap my water bill was in Phoenix.

I don’t think this is where @Seeking Alpha Social Club wanted this thread to go to about him slapping other people’s kids.
But I thought this is how @Seeking Alpha Social Club dealt with kids

Phoenix’s East Valley has no snow, 3 casinos with poker within 20 minutes of downtown Phoenix, 9 months of fantastic weather, great food, great golf, and 3.5 professional sports franchises (sorry Coyotes). If you want to cool off in the 3 hot months, go 2 hours to Flagstaff. If you want snow (sicko!) goto Flagstaff in the winter months and they have skiing and other winter sports. Lots of very good breweries in the Valley and Flagstaff area as well. And I’m not a hiker but the hiking and scenery here is amazing.

Plus, I need home game players :)

I lived in tempe for a couple years. Can confirm it's F'ing awesome if you can stand the heat. I can't wait to go back. My wife and I actually half way joke (half way serious) about retiring to Flag. Or, Prescott.

On the downside, it seems that everything eventually fails under the Arizona sun and hard Arizona water.

Car batteries, my pool control wifi system, appliances, water misting system, water heater, etc. AC units last about 8 years if you’re lucky. Definitely have to budget for this sort of thing unless you’re pretty handy and enjoy that sort of work.

Fuck.
Shoveling.
Snow.

Snow sounds cheaper and easier ........

So like Florida but without the humidity.

You will be old people
My in-laws moved into a brand new sub in South Carolina when they retired because among other reasons they didn't want to be around old people. They were surrounded by young families with little children who in my observation they had absolutely nothing in common with. My parents took a different route when they retired and moved into a community with mostly newly retired people. I saw them surrounded by people they had many things in common with, most notably free time and always looking for something to do. The down side is my parents moved into this community in 1995 in their mid 50's and pretty much everyone they knew back then is now dead. But from what I have witnessed I'd definitely take the older people when I am old.

I can even see a parallel in my own life. We moved into our subdivision in 1998 when it was new construction and our first child had not yet been born. It was great back then as like 80% of our sub were families just getting started. Twenty plus years later many of these people have moved on and younger families are starting to move in. Us "old" residents like to comment how we don't know many of the new people, but I do see many of these new families with little kids hanging out together just like we used to!

Do you do so from rocking chairs on your front porch yelling "get off my lawn" to neighborhood children?

Or

Do you stand in your yard shaking your fist to the sky, while yelling at clouds?

My wife and I have very different interests. My main hobbies are poker, some outdoor stuff like hiking and casual sports, and watching sports. She loves to travel, visit museums, and the arts. We don’t want to live in a big city, but want easy access to a city.

I’ve spent a lot of time in South Florida, mainly in the Palm Beach area. I still have some family in the area. Maybe Tampa is far enough away?
Delaware? an hour from Philly to the Beach, close enough to NY, DC. No State Income tax relatively lower cost of living than the rest of the east coast, beach life.

I think my wife and I have pretty much settled on east of the Mississippi (that really narrows it down, right?). And after driving through the great state of Virginia for the @Seeking Alpha Social Club meetup, I have to say I’m considering other options. Maybe Richmond, Charlottesville (never been there), Fredericksburg or even some place closer to DC. North Carolina and Sarasota are still on the short list.
Charlottesville is beautiful, lots of outdoorsy options. Only an hour or so from Richmond, 2 1/2 from DC. not much in the way of gambol there, however.

I plan to retire in Delaware, although it is also a bit of poker wasteland at the moment. At least until @PhilLaFond gets a game going!

There actually is a state income tax in Delaware. However, there is no sales tax and VERY low property taxes especially in Sussex county. Those attributes are favorable to retirement FWIW.

Negatives are traffic in summer, excessive bachelorette parties in the beach towns, days when the wind is out of the west, and proximity to New Jersey.

I don’t think I’m a grumpy old man yet. We talk about it drinking beer in the driveway with the other 50ish year old people that are still around!

I know the closed Dover Downs poker room, is Harrington still open? Delaware Park still has a poker room. Others are 2 -3 hours away (Live! Philly, Maryland Live, AC Rooms, etc...)

Once all of us old MD degens retire in slower Delaware there will be some juicy home games going. Just might be a few years.

I know the former manager of Harrington’s room but it's closed indefinitely, sadly. Had some great games too.
