Retire in North Carolina ... poker wasteland? (4 Viewers)

Buying a house now in preparation for later retirement and using it as a vacation spot for now?
This and I expect I will be able to work remotely a good chunk of the time. My best guess for actual retirement is 5 years give or take.

I don't disagree with anything you said about Indianapolis, but those reasons also apply to a large extent to Columbus, which we like. We are just sick of the winters and the weather overall and that's why I don't envision retiring here. I suppose the weather in Indianapolis is slightly better.

Going to check out a few of the higher ranked places on our list the next few months. Richmond in a few weeks, Raleigh Durham in October. Probably Charlotte around Labor Day. A work colleague of mine has a house on Lake Keowee in SC (near Greenville) so we’ll probably check that out too. Might pair that with a condo in Atlanta, who knows.
If Atlanta's in the mix, feel free to PM. I'm a poker guy. I'm a real estate guy. I'm also a guy that got sunk by your rivered straight at S@TP!

As @grebe made reference to, Ashland Virginia is a great little town, I lived there the last 12 years I was in Virginia. About 12 minutes north of the City of Richmond. Also about a 40 minute drive to Fredericksburg area and @Seeking Alpha Social Club.

The main drag about living anywhere from Richmond to the northern Virginia suburbs is the Interstate 95 corridor. IT SUCKS to put it mildly. Traffic is horrendous at almost anytime of day and throughout the year. In the summer, there are NO shortcuts or secret get arounds to avoid it thanks to GPS. ;)

If I was going to live in Virginia again and had bigger means, my personal choice would probably be the west end of Richmond, Short Pump, Goochland area. You are far enough out of the city of Richmond and have all the upscale living you could desire.
Many folks come out of the city to shop in Short Pump vs staying downtown. You’ve also got the outer extremities of interstate 295 and highway 288 that are easily accessible from that end of town.

I lived in Short Pump from 06-09 and really liked it. Reason for moving to Ashland was mainly being closer to work and a little more affordable housing at the time. I still found myself returning to Short Pump for entertainment, shopping and evening out purposes on a regular basis even after moving to Ashland.

You’d have many options in the Richmond area as you’ve heard. The airport is by far one of the best I’ve ever used. If you want to see historical towns, you’ve got Williamsburg and Washington DC both within 2 hour and 1 hour drives respectively. ( Traffic pending)

The beach is just over a two hour drive and you can be in the mountains of the Shenandoah in under 2 hours. It really is a good spot depending on where one is in life.
I spent my entire life in Virginia before moving out west. For me it was just time for a change and a different way of life. If I had to move back east again, Virginia would still rank high on my list despite feeling like I’ve just out grown it at this point in my life.

Short Pump/Goochland area if you have the means and want to enjoy just about the best of everything.

I just caught this thread. I told you the house right next to me was for sale, but u blew it. You could have been my next door neighbor. All poker boxes checked instantly. Home games - check, I know about more than a few. And I get invited to all of them. And ur basement would have been great for a poker room too.
Casinos - check - 3 within easy driving distances and great poker at all of them (depending on the night) (yup, there is traffic during the work hours, but not at 4 am when I am typically driving home).
Best part, there is plenty to keep your wife occupied - easy-ish access to DC, etc.
Ahh, what could have been……….

Everything I’ve read says Maryland is the worst place to retire, but they obviously weren’t taking the poker into account. I may have to come visit you on one of these trips.

David after a week of Maryland poker……

I do have to concur, Maryland Live poker is pretty good. ;) Not a fan of MGM or Horseshoe though.
Horseshoe poker generally sucks, except for the “jimmy” plo game, which has been running on Friday nights these days, or whenever I call jimmy and say let’s play tonight. Great plo game…….

I live in asheville nc. Definitely not the best poker spot but me and a friend host a cash game and a tournament every 2 weeks and theres 1 more home game i know of but the rake is ridiculous ao wouldn’t recommend it…

Buffalo NY. Relatively low for property prices. Poker in Niagara Falls and only a half hour from the Canadian border. And when winter hits we are ready (sorry Texas).

The way I see it, everywhere you go there are natural disasters. There are earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes. All of those you have to EVACUATE to safety. Here in Buffalo, we get blizzards. For blizzards for don't evacuate, you STAY HOME. Hell we even had a mayor come on tv to tell us, and I quote, "buy a six pack of beer and stay home". I like buying beer and staying home better than boarding up my house and running away. Think about it man.
Fuck.
Shoveling.
Snow.

Unfortunately, that does not fix the traffic problem. Been there....it's much worse.
Having lived in San Diego and the DC Metro area, I found traffic in the DC area to be way worse. I-95 in and around DC might be the worst traffic in the country. It’s definitely possible to live in Cali and not have your soul crushed by traffic on a regular basis.

We have a few more years to go but we've realized there is not a single place that ticks all the boxes. So we have a couple apartments in different cities that we can flit between. The benefit of an apartment is that you can lock it up and leave for 3-6 months without bother. Right now both are rented out but I've given the tenants their 8 year notice!

Phoenix’s East Valley has no snow, 3 casinos with poker within 20 minutes of downtown Phoenix, 9 months of fantastic weather, great food, great golf, and 3.5 professional sports franchises (sorry Coyotes). If you want to cool off in the 3 hot months, go 2 hours to Flagstaff. If you want snow (sicko!) goto Flagstaff in the winter months and they have skiing and other winter sports. Lots of very good breweries in the Valley and Flagstaff area as well. And I’m not a hiker but the hiking and scenery here is amazing.

Plus, I need home game players :)

Arizona is nice. Seriously considered a move to the Goodyear area for work back in 07.
Lots of fun destinations within a half days drive.

I’ve always liked Arizona. How are the housing prices? More importantly, is there any water out there?
