What's the setup? Cash or tourney? Stakes? Starting stacks?

Gives us the scoop!! :)

Basic tournament game with $3K chips. We tried $2k starting and $2k re-buy and that usually end up going too long. Last time we tried $3k single buy-in and it worked out well.

Chip breakdown:

5s - 10
25s - 10
50s - 10
100s - 12
500s - 2

I originally had 10 5s with no 1s since the blind starts at $10. But I wanted have more color on the table :)

We ended up not using the ones since the initial blinds was 10/20.

The game just finished an hour ago and it was a success. I even won and finished in first place. Pretty lucky to win first time hosting.

Thanks for the explanation. Is there a thread or a site on how to plan chip distribution?

I think our set up is probably not standard tournament format.

Each player starts with $3,000 and no re-buy, and blind starts at 10/20.

So I read the other thread on how to map out a cash set and it mentioned that ideally, the denomination should increase about 4X-5X between chips.

So would this set be efficient?

$3,000.00

denomination (number of chips):

5(10)/25(10)/100(12)/500(1)/1000(1)

I think the advice would in general be that you replaced the 1000 with 2 more 500s.

When you upgrade your Barrington table there are a lot of great threads on this site for how to refinish the top. It’s super easy and makes the table a lot better, in my opinion. I found the original felt to be cheap feeling and had very very thin padding.

Combo no good?
The 50 is a waste. Totally unnecessary
definitely no good.

25/100/500/1000/5000
I've seen this here a lot, and I do understand the why. But while this advice is great when you are picking out a new set of chips, or if you're playing with unmarked (no denomination) chips, what's the harm if you already have the $50s (or $10s) sitting there in your chip case? If you have them, why not use them?

SparkyPlayer, you're a few months down the road from this post. Has pulling those chips out of your game made the game play any differently? Those pretty blue chips are just sitting there in your case all lonely, just longing to be touched. :( :confused

Nothing worse than playing in a game where the host has some generic set with stupid denoms and feels the need to use them just because.

Nothing? Really? I can think of a lot of things that are much worse!

I'm new here. I'm trying to learn. Enlighten me.

Too many denoms at one time not only adds confusion to the players, but makes the bank worthless when it is time to color up. As a host you need to not only provide a good time that allows your players to focus on cards and fun and not denoms, but you need to make sure you don't lose your mind coloring up constantly for no other reason than "I like these chips". When everything serves a USEFUL purpose it makes everything go much more smoothly.

Too many denoms can be unwieldy. Maybe less so for cash, but it's bad for tournaments. Why? Because as the blinds increase, the lowest denomination chips become inefficient to use and are replaced by higher denom chips (hence the "colour-up" phase), and the more denoms there are, the more time you have to waste with colouring up.

And it's a lot of extra math to do in your head when you're counting up the stacks either when someone goes all in or you're reconciling the cash at the end of the night.

Chip efficiency = getting the minimum number of chips you need to play comfortably within a set budget, so you can afford better chips!

Man, I keep seeing more and more people from Maryland on here. Are we the center of the poker universe? Maybe....

Also, yes, there are worse things than playing poker with less than ideal chip setups. But color up breaks are already a pain in the butt, I would not want to add any more.

Unfortunately, I only hosted that one game and rotated to other neighbors hosting, then the pandemic hit.

But I think I made a better selection for the scrub donkey chips that I ordered :)
