Maybe someone can fill me in on this. I've seen people describe the chips at Canterbury as Bud Jones weighted S2 (Which would seem to be a misnaming of the Bud Jones S line per the chart), but I did reach out to their VP of casino operations and he said their chip line is Bud Jones V7. They seem to me to be too heavy to be the V7 line, could he be incorrect? If anyone knows or can shed some light on it for me, that'd be helpful!

I'm going to defer this question to @Nanook actually. I think he may know more than me on this one.

I have always been under the impression they were S2, but I haven't met the VP of Casino operations believe it or not. :)

FWIW, here is a chip I got in 2018 that lost it's inlay, so I'm not sure if that helps you figure it out.

I will say, regardless of which line their chips belong, the room is now 23 years old and it's been the same chips all along :).

I have always been under the impression they were S2....

Based on this reference: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/resources/bud-jones-chip-reference.79/
they look like BJ S2 chips. They don't look anything like the V7 chips in the reference and they look exactly like the S2 chips so that is what I thought they were. One would think that the guy ordering chips would know what type of chips he was ordering so something seems off. I am not sure what it is, the reference or the guy ordering chips.

For what it is worth, here is my pic of the lineup minus the $10 which is brown and the $300 which is white. If anyone cares I can post a pic of those chips too, but I'd have to grab 1 of each the next time I am there as I do not have a pic handy. It seems to me like it is pretty easy to pick out each of the CP chips from the Reference guide S2 page, but I don't see any on the V7 page that look anything like the CP chips. What do I know... Pretty much nothing

First time I've ever seen a $300, what's the story behind the denom?
They got introduced in the pit about they time they started offering baccarat. I assume there must be some 30-1 wager, not being a baccarat expert. Poker players started trading for these instead of cashing out stacks of $100 bills in the higher stakes games.

Close....
There is a $300 max bet in MN table games so hence the $300 chip

Ah. That makes sense. If the racing commission isn't going to allow $500 wagers, there's no need for them to ever allow a $500 chip. So $300 was the next best idea.

Lol, again close....
Next go around they are going to buy $1000 chips even though the biggest bet will remain $300.

Lots of guys in the bigger game stash $300 chips in their boxes & because of that they are running short of $300 chips for the table games. With a $1000 chip lots less chips get stashed in boxes

Thanks for the help and excellent pics. Do those come in at around 12g then? Curious about the weight as my memory says they were nice and hefty. I think the V7s are only 10.5g or something.
Also, I think the operations guy has his own chip line wrong. I’m sure he wasn’t there 23 years ago and it’s easy to get them all mixed up!

Appreciate all the replies! Now to get my home set built from weighted S2 bj!

I used to be one of those guys:). I closed my box in March of 2020 knowing they were going to shut down soon. It was two days before they closed their doors.

Obviously I am not up on my Canterbury park gossip, when did you find this out? That's surprising to me that the racing commission would greenlight this.

Most here aren’t plastic fans, but I always have been. I substituted CPs in my weighted S2 set.

This is very intriguing. The weighted S2 line shouldn’t be this light. Arent SJ intercontintals v7 and come in at that same weight?
Look at the shapes on the mold of the SJ Intercontinentals, they sure look like S2's to me too. Here are a couple pics of 10 of each of the $1's and $2's from CP which, as others have said sure look like they are S2's. Weight pic from the reference I linked above too. Not an exact match, but I suppose my scale could be off. idk, but weight lines up more with weighted S2's than anything from the V7 line too.

really clears things up for me! I found Tomb1's word doc explanation on here https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/bud-jones-informational-thread.17609/#post-321725
and it has a couple of the weights different than the chart you showed, but it clearly says around 11g for weighted S2s. Thanks again! I was also referencing a post that had an older BJ catalogue, where the weights of the V7 and S series chips don't match the chart, so I'm assuming it was a pretty old catalogue. Thoughts? Here's the link https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...s-information-and-buyers-guide-catalog.80467/
It is nice to finally have it settled in my head, cheers.

I remember coming across this thread a little bit ago, so I thought I'd sneak a pick from the beginning of a tournament I played there the other day (little bankroll builder, top 20% get lammers for a bigger buy in knockout, 12k starting - made it past break but not didn't qualify rip)

Not familiar with make and model of chips like you guys, but maybe their tournament set is the V7s the director of ops was referring to?

dang those chips are freaking awesome. The size of the inlay makes me think they could be V7s, anyone else know?

That would actually explain a lot, and the tournament set is somewhat recent, like mid-2010s I believe. The Cash chips have been the same since 2000.

First time I've ever seen a $300, what's the story behind the denom?
For many years in MN the max bet on any blackjack table was $199 because it allowed the casinos to have one floor person for every 4 tables, had it been a dollar more, state law required the ratio to be one floor for every two tables. So it was an effort by Mystic Lake at the time to reduce labor costs. At some point years ago, the limit was raised to $300. Max betting for baccarat is $300 per spot, but that rules has a hilarious loophole. Each player is allowed to wager 3 spots for a total of $900 per hand. But wait, there's more. At every bacc table there are what I call squirrels. These guy sit and wait for a big player who wants to bet the whole spread. He can achieve this by giving 3 $300 chips to a few squirrels and once they touch the chips and place the bet, it's now their wager. If the big player wins, it's customary to throw the squirrel a green for their service.

In a similar manner, for poker the maximum bet was $60, which is why Canterbury had a 30/60 game. Once the limit was raised to $100, Running Aces and others began offering 2-100 spread. Now there's even a 50/100 LHE game and Mix game that goes daily.
