Help me understand how that was a foul to call the goal back. WTAF
Scandalous from the referee. VAR should have overturned it.

This Argentina side are a disgrace. They are anti-football.

If they go on to win then Infantino got the final he wanted and deserved.

100% - Argentina is like the little brat on the playground that starts shit and then runs to the teacher.

Their “little bitch” is showing and on full display.

Hey, don’t be associating me with Americans!! 🤣

But I agree, there are extremes in different sports. Basketball on one end where scoring feels almost pointless, and then Soccer on the other where it feels like there’s no scoring, especially since game time is longer than other sports.

And I agree some of the most nail biting games come from 0-0, but that to me should be the exception, not the rule. The same way a really high scoring game can be fun every once in a while.

And this take is sponsored by hockey the greatest sport from my perspective 😉
Is game time longer than other sports? If you go to a regular game you’ll be on your way home in under 2 hours. A lot of American sports last a lot longer. Probably because they constantly stop the clock whenever the ball goes out of play and have quarters so they can show more tv commercials.

Yes
Yes Yes Yes GIF

If this stays the same that will mean that there’s only one country that has only won the World Cup once (60 years ago when they hosted it and had two dodgy goals allowed) and they will be isolated by the rest of the world for their perennial underachievement. Won’t that be a shame  :ROFLMAO:

Oh ya, most North American sports are a 3-4 hour commitment. I love how with soccer you can be in and out in around 2.5 hours, it’s a good amount of time for a game.

But yes:
Soccer = 90min
Hockey (NHL) = 60min
Football (NFL) = 60min
Basketball (NBA) = 48min

So that also contributes to soccer feeling like such low scoring compared to other sports.

Didn't Merino step on the defender's foot? It looked like that on the replay. If that's the case, it's a foul and no goal (and I rooted for Spain).

5 minutes added on time is a joke. Should be a minute at most.
There was a goal with a long celebration. There was a head injury. Seemed reasonable to me. 1 minute would have been crazy.

We’ll agree to disagree on both decisions. If Argentina were winning it would have been one minute.

I'm unsure of the first one. I'm saying it looked like he stepped on the foot. If he did, foul. But if he didn't, then the goal should have stood.

But the second, how can a goal with at least a minute of celebration (probably more) and that nasty shot Merino took to the face with at least a minute of face-reallignment (or whatever they did) be just a minute?

The first is subjective, but the second is just math.

Time isn’t added on for goal celebrations. I only know that because of an incident in Scotland last season.

Poor final for such a quality tournament. Great entertainment for the last month though - I'll go 4/5.

It was anticipated. Spain's plan is "defend defend defend, occasionally play offense."
I had it over 50% that it'd go scoreless to PKs. The red card's the only reason we got an actual goal in run of play.

@BonScot This may be news to you, but the players have no control over the referee’s decisions or VAR. The referee calls the match as he sees it, and the players simply play football.

Congratulations to you all for winning the world cup. Argentina just didn’t show up when it mattered.

Paredes’ altercation after the match was disgraceful, and we’re all ashamed of it.

That was very painful to sit through at roughly $100 per minute -_- But at least the water was only $5.

See you all in 4 years

You don’t get it. The team with 20 attempts and 12 shots was clearly only occasionally on offense
The same Spain that gave up exactly ONE goal in 8 World Cup matches? I'd say they defend a little bit ....
Of course they defend, all teams do. But what's unique about Spain is their possession. They're ridiculously good at keeping the ball.

So I wouldn't call them a defense oriented team. They're mostly attacking. But their attacks often take a long time, and they often abort and play back to regroup.

Regarding stats, here is a good page that shows how they did regarding attempts etc:
