So Scotch drinkers, what do you think of Tamdhu? I picked up this sampler today for $20. Then I watched this review of the 18. Now I'm looking forward to twisting them open.

I've been thinking of buying one special bottle of scotch, preferably at least 18 years, but still trying to stay at about (or under) $200. The Tamdhu 18 is right at that limit. Any other suggestions for a really nice Scotch at $200 or less?

And all the stores I’ve been to lately, even Costco, I can get any mediocre EC BP from the last two years, they are everywhere.

I’m a big fan of Tamdhu! Absolute sherry bombs…if that’s your thing. I’ve had a taste of the 12yr and I ended up buying a bottle of their Batch Strength which IMO is every bit as good as Aberlour A’Bunadh. Im sure the 18yr is probably worth the $$

If you’re wanting something not so heavy on the sherry, Bruichladdich 18yr is excellent and should be right under your $200 threshold. If you’re a peat head, Port Charlotte 18yr is fantastic and also right at the $200 msrp. Glenmorangie 18yr at about $150 is probably your best bang for your buck.

I really like the 15 and the 18. Never had the 12. The Cask Strength is good also.

Imo, Tamdhu 18 is way better than the current Mac18 for exemple, for about half the price. However, it is still way more than GlenAllachie 18 or Arran 18 for exemple. So from a dollar perspective, it lags behind a bit. From a quality perspective, it’s up there for me with GlenDronach 18, which I believe now costs more than the Tamdhu.

If it’s not clear, Tamdhu is a sherried Scotch in the same vein as Macallan, GlenAllachie and Glendronach.

A year behind the curve but finally stumbled on this Compass Box Crimson Casks. Fig jam,m and chocolate, very nice.
Worth $75? My local has it on the shelf for that price.

I love their Orchard House and it only sells for $50 when it’s in stock. I like that price better!

Thanks for the input guys. If it's not obvious, I don't have a lot of experience with scotch. I have enjoyed most everything that I've tried. I've bought a few cheaper 12 year single malts, and a Glenmorangie 14 year finished, I think, in rum casks.

The 12 was tasty, probably as good or better than my other 12s. The 15 was probably the best scotch I've tried. Until the 18, which was wonderful! Wish I could better describe it, but the best I can do is Really Yummy! LOL. I guess I like sherry cask scotches.

Yep I think I paid $65 for this one and would gladly pay that again. I've been meaning to try Ochard House as well, finding ANY Compass Box has been somewhat hit or miss around here for some reason.

That's always a little dicey to suggest/recommend Scotches... They could go from a 40% Sherried Scotch to a Cask Strength Peated Scotch matured in ex-Bourbon barrels. Those are unbelievably different.

Three things to ask when someone wants a suggestion are: 1-Do you like/prefer Peated Scotch? 2-Do you like/prefer Sherried Scotch and 3-Do you mind Cask Strength whisky or prefer lower ABV? So along those three axes there is an infinite amount of combinations...

I know it's not super helpful but it helps explain why sometimes people are reticent in suggesting Scotch bottles without the above clarifications.

Fair point. I would prefer to avoid 40% bottles. I tend to buy other scotches that are 43-48%

I have not yet purchased peated scotch. I've tasted a couple and don't mind them. Open for a suggestion for best beginner peated scotch. Reasonably priced. Say $50-75. I've been considering Highland Park, Laphroaig 10 and some of the Lagavulin scotches.
2-Do you like/prefer Sherried Scotch and
I very much enjoyed the Tamdhu 18. Liked the 15 also. For this particular ($200ish) bottle request, yes, probably sticking with sherry cask or other non-peated.

No objection to cask strength, but some I've looked at don't have age statements. Ideally, for this particular bottle, looking for something with age. Probably 18 years plus. But definitely interested in a good cask strength bottle also, just at a lower price point.

No, it's very helpful. Thanks for suggesting I lay it out like this.

This one is totally new to me. At MSRP to boot!

I tried this one at my local watering hole a couple months ago and immediately bought one of the very few bottles they had for sale. It's remarkably good! The higher-proof ones are usually a little hot for my tastes and I find I want a drop or three of water to tame, but this one needs nothing more than the time to enjoy it.

What is MSRP? Some guys in a local bourbon group were talking about it and said it was okay but overpriced..
