Also considering, Sailor 1911 large or realo and the platinum 3776. Any suggestions?

Just bought the pilot vanishing point the other day. I’m looking to get the Custom 823!
I used to have a serious vanishing point fetish It got so bad I had to do some soul searching and realised I had become a collector. I didn't want to just have stuff that I don't use so I sold almost all of them off. I only have 4 now.

This was close to the peak:

It was strange to have the clip where the section would be, but I got used to it pretty quickly :)

my friend gifted me a metropolitan, and now I’m down the rabbit hole. Inks, paper, nibs...

Inks and paper can get crazy, especially because the unit cost is so low. I have 100s of ink bottles.

My favourite paper is Rhodia. I used to exclusively use Rhodia meeting books, very nice paper for fountain pens.

Ordering Tomoe paper now. Might add on Clairefontaine and Rhodia. :)

@Darson Damn that is gorgeous collection you have there ! Beautiful. As for the VP photo, was that your personal collection you owned at one point in time? OMG that is sick, so awesome. I can totally see myself doing the same thing.

@Han Trinh how hard is it to clean the custom 823? Also, would you not recommend using shimmer ink for the vacuum filler?

@yone The 823 is such a pleasure to write with, I'd recommend checking it out. I've tempted to buy a Sailor and a Platinum for the fun of it to see what those would be like. If you get one let me know what you think of them.

I’m planning to go to a Japanese stationary shop today with my girlfriend. They have the top 3 Japanese pen makers brands. I hope they let me test drive them in the store.
the sailor nibs sure are pretty!

Indeed it does take extra time to clean the Custom 823. It's not a pen I'd want to keep changing inks on all the time. For me the 823's are my workhorse pen that I keep my "must have" colors in.. It's got such a HUGE ink capacity !

It's not hard to clean, the 823 does takes quite a few suck in clean water, shake, empty it out repetitions to clean it, It's not too bad though. But definitely takes longer than cleaning a converter type pen with a syringe or bulb squeeze thingy.

Shimmering inks should be fine, I've got some that have shimmer and have not had problems. They're just like normal FP ink's more or less with some extra qualities.

Glitter inks however, I'd be too scared to try in more expensive pens. As they have actual glitter particles. For glitter inks, I'd probably buy something cheap like a TWSBI for my self personally to play with them.

Yeah, they were mine. Some are rare colors that I paid silly money for but sold for at least what I paid.

I used to have a clear 823 but got an offer I couldn’t refuse so it’s gone now. Pilots have my personal favorite out of the box nibs. Sailors are pretty decent too. Just don’t go looking at maki-e Nakaya or Danitrio - if you think TRKs are expensive you’re in for a shock.

Give the 823 Medium and Fine a try if they have some in the shop for you to try. have fun!

Yeah that’s what I meant, sheen? I get it confused. I like the way it can look, but yeah I’m worried about the particles getting stuck in the feed or messing with the plunger if the ink dries out.

LOL I just got them mixed up myself .. I meant to say..

Sheen is fine in FP's. I have not had any issues with inks that have some sheen to them.

Shimmering / Glittering Inks I'm in the same boat as you, I'd be worried about the particles getting stuck in the feed or messing up the plunger if the ink dries out.

I don't have any experience with Shimmering/Glittering Inks. Maybe @Darson has?

Good fountain pens don’t have to be expensive. There is the pilot metropolitan - you might be able to find it close to $20. Also, the TWSBI eco. Definitely the best bang for the buck. It’s like RHCs and THCs, they both get the job done but you might pay more for THCs just because. And of course there are the IHCs of pens out there too  :whistling:

edit: I don’t have the TWSBI, but my friend vouches for the Eco.

Parker Duofold and Waterman Carene two of my favorite ballpoints. Silver Victorian Yard O Led with a pipe tamper on the end is another favorite.
I haven’t bought a nice pen in a long time.

oooh... I love pens.

the Montblanc Rouge et Noire rollerball is my daily workhorse. Medium tip black rollerball... writes as smooth as melted butter.

WOW, I love the look of that pen! That Montblanc snake clip is so so sick ! I googled and there's even a FP version of it.. Gorgeous .

Damn, I was just going to test drive pens but ended up leaving with the pilot custom 823, pilot metropolitan, iroshizuku Yama-budo and Rhodia note book. Good thing there are no poker chip store in NYC!
Oh @Han Trinh the sailor 1911 was really really really nice!

That place looks cool. It looks like heaven in there ! Congrats on your 823, great choice , it's a superb writer. Which nib did you end up getting for your 823? BTW, super cool you picked up Yama-Budo, that's actually one of my favourites colors.

Sailor 1911 drool =P ~~~~~ Which nibs 1911 nib sizes did you try that you liked. I'm feeling an itch :D
