Alright! Many of us, we get good at garage games and realize our friends are donkeys that don't fold and usually don't know that position matters and may or may not be our wife's boyfriend. Typical.

I'm now looking to slowly improve as a lifelong endeavor. I host a 5c/10c or 10c/10c game, do very well (though probably losing when considered cost of all the beer/bourbon/food) and have played $1/2 a handful of times, between 10-20 sessions probably slightly losing more than I win overall at casinos/backrooms. @Josh Kifer turned me on to The Course by Ed Miller and I loved it. Advice for my level: still in a pigpen but looking to get better at live low stakes.

Any advice building off this kind of book? I've read Super System 1 & 2 as well as Harrington on Hold Em. I like the idea of paying for coaching or advice but I dont have the hand history or graphs that online has, just anecdotal flawed ideas of what my game is like so Im not sure I could make use of that time efficiently.

I really enjoyed Red Chip Poker course. It is a bunch of videos that go thru all kinds of poker fundamentals, building up to 2 "capstones"....1 cash by Ed Miller based on the course, and the other a tournament version by Chris Fox (author of Short Stack Ninja....a MUST READ for tournament players).

It's 5 bucks a week for unlimited access. I would plan on 3-6 months to get thru it thoughtfully.

Whack-A- @Josh Kifer ?

You could always become a poker player.

One old timer once explained what a poker player is, and what it is not. Explaining that one should have a fundamental grasp on multiple forms of poker.

imagine going to the pool you get there and they only have kiddy pools, it happens to be by a lake and the ocean, but no one swims they just sit in the kiddy pool all day. Soul crushing because it’s like captured monkeys with the zoo doors open. They think that’s “swimming”

Omaha has some great books, but for other games there only school, Hard Knocks high baby, come join us.

Lol, I think I lost the analogy. So who is the poker player? Is this just another Omaha advert?

No I’m saying there is so many other forms and games, everyone thinks that Holdem matters or is the only game but in the poker game of life, it’s kindergarten, and so many people never grow beyond that. I feel like 99% of players will never put their net worth on the table and play it in its intended form.
I wouldn’t.
Often times you can make more money playing limit holdem correctly than in most NLH games.

Are you interested in pre-recorded video content? I think that there are some good stuff out there for fundamentals. Jonathan Little comes to mind as the favourite, as do Bart Hanson, as far as low stakes NLHE goes.
+1 for Jonathan Little.

I'm not a big fan of online content, and most books just give theory that I intuitively knew before I picked up the book. Little's videos, though a little harsh/pitchy sounding (due to a poor microphone), are downright excellent. He had a special for a few days where he gave full, unrestricted access to his poker school to everyone and did not require a credit-card or even an email address. No ads either. It was brilliant. It changed the way I view the game, and in those instances where I can adopt his style I have done quite well. Unfortunately, I often revert back to my friendly/social game that results in more losses, but that's on me.

In short, Little's free videos are worth the hour or so to watch. The classes are also excellent, but very expensive for someone playing micro-stakes. You just aren't going to win enough unless you play a shit-ton or move up in stakes.

Okay, appreciate this. Yes; Im willing to spend a bit for something useful to me but youre right. Some of those classes are cost prohibitive.

There are a number of the classes/quizzes that are free, so maybe hunt those down - and as noted, anything he has on YouTube is free, but the quizzes were the most beneficial to me, as it was active learning vas passive learning. His videos often ask you questions and pause as you make your decision, which is also active learning.

I understand your POV and I have fun playing the other games, but I definitely dont view NLHE as a simple game or childish. Lots of your analogies dont just say its one piece of the puzzle and you're dissappointed people dont see the rest, they usually downgrade NLHE in some way to lesser.

I have a blast playing all of them, scarney has been a favorite of some of my players, and Im excited for your circus cards! But I also like learning the theory behind NLHE and will be focused on that because thats what Ill be able to play with strangers in more places.

Ah, THIS is where its at! At the end of The Course there were little hand quizzes and then explained why the correct answer was correct. Very helpful.

Come to some of the meetups, you’d have a blast

Excellent advice ITT! Jonathan Little's videos have been good, I like his approach and feel I've learned a bunch. I'll keep focusing on that, correct ways to approach common scenarios, and will use this thread as a lil diary. Joined Red Chip poker's Discord while considering a subscription, will report back if its at all helpful

Moved houses and home game has been particularly soft these days, not doing anything for my game lol. Wife 3-bet me for the first time in her life and proudly flipped over Aces as I mucked my T8s lol. Love her, everyone at the table clapped for her when it happened. Downright adorable.

Learned I'll be heading to the Beau Rivage for a week in September so I'm going to start saving cash to have a proper bankroll to play live, I heard it plays deep. Seems silly to most to save for a $1/3 trip but student life sucks, I'll build a bigger roll in a year once I'm Dr. NotRealNameNoSir. Definitely not just a poker trip, and will figure out hours I can comfortably play. Will also be networking and presenting my work there, but here I am: instead of editing my paper I'm daydreaming about turn bets!
