My Journey As A Professional Poker Player (30 Viewers)

Better shot of his stack

This is The Rock. From my memory of playing with him at @Payback 's game: he causes any UTG player who currently owns him to place in a mandatory straddle, which is done by putting The Rock into the pot. The winner of that hand takes possession of The Rock, and must straddle when they are next UTG. The Rock is worth $X dollars at cashout, therefore he carries that value into the pot with him when placed into the pot. Typically The Rock is first bought by the house, to drive more action, larger pots, and more rake.

Only one Rock in this picture is real, don't be fooled by Rock-ette imitators:

“ ^ “ simply refers to the post above, without fully quoting the post. No clue how that casino uses it on their board.

2/5 was meh, no action. They just called the 1/2 AND put us in the private room since they have no tables with the tourney running

Asian maniac named Vong or Bong sits down with $200, raises to $25 after a few callers of a $5 straddle

I pot to $95 to iso. Get it in, flop top two but he rivers a straight

Question...

Have you done your taxes yet? As a first year poker pro, I was wondering if you found it more frustrating than paying taxes as a regular employee (with regular monies taken out along the way).

As this was the first year where my investment income surpassed my actual paycheck, it felt like a massive belly blow - wondering if your results were similar.

I have a friend who is a CPA, but yeah, self-employment taxes suck. But with my hourly and more freedom it is still worth it

Have you changed your game/table selection strategy since you’ve started this (aside from not playing with Cubans)?

Not really. Best for my style is lots of loose passives who pay off post-flop

I try to avoid tables where too many people are trying to make the game play bigger with frequent straddles or raises, because I'm giving up my post-flop edge if they're trying to get stacks in pre

Not that games like that can't be profitable, but they are much swingier, with higher highs and lower lows

Just wanted to say how much I love this thread. I’m sure many of us have dreamed of doing this but you are doing it. Thanks for sharing the ups and downs and showing what the life of a grinder is really like.

Thanks, glad to share the journey with everyone!

Some changes to PLO

Not sure if having the rock on a game prevents restraddles or if they'te allowed with a rock also in play.

Going to find out. The unlimited restraddles could get nuts at 5/5 and above, not sure the poker economy can weather that
