I think we usually say that a tourney will end no later than the level where total chips in play = 20BB.

At least that's what I usually use when planning things.

Double, double, double to start, huh?

I'd start shallower and use more levels in the starting 2 hours.

@Legend5555 , I semi agree.
I decided to use the 5 denomination to start "shallower" instead of a slow start with 25 being the beginning denom. Still only 200/400 at level 8. I'm not saying this is best just letting you know my thought process.
Thanks for the reply.

@Forever to Thee, I’m wondering if you misunderstood @Legend5555.

Your starting stacks are 500BB deep, and therefore, to get done in 4.5 hours, the blind structure has to be really aggressive, and you chose three 100% increases to start the tourney.

If you really want T5000 starting stacks, start your blinds at 10/20, and smooth out your blind levels a bit.
10/20
15/30
25/50
40/80
50/100
Color up T5’s
75/150
100/200
150/300
Color up 25’s
200/400
300/600
600/1200
800/1600
Color up T100’s
1000/2000
1500/3000
2000/4000
3000/6000 *The tourney should end here.
4000/8000
5000/10000

Still T5000 stacks, still 16x15-minute levels, but a pretty smooth blind structure with no 100% increases.

Legend, I semi agree.

My general theory runs counter to many on PCF. I prefer to start shallower in all my tournaments and make level jumps smaller and level times longer. I find playing deeper than 250-300bb somewhat pointless in the context of a tournament where the poker is main reason to be there. I like to keep avg stack sizes relative to the blinds flatter throughout the middle, and preferably through the end of I can manage it. Not that you are ever going to be meaningfully deep in the end stages of a fast home tourney, but I like to see more than just 30bb in play by heads up.

“Deep” and “shallow” refer to number of big blinds, not lowest denomination of chip. T2000 is fairly deep if blinds are 5/10 (2000bb), but shallow if blinds are 25/50 (40bb).
