Who can remember the most popular chips going back 10+ years? I cannot remember the name of the poker chips but back when i was broke college student, a set was fetching like over $5-$10 a chip. I also believe the chip also made it on a famous poker movie, maybe Rounders.

most popular chips, hands-down

There were certainly sets where some denoms were in the $5-$10/chip range, but I don’t recall any set where that would have been true for all denoms. That sillyness started later... I suppose if a set back then was heavy on the upper denoms, then Ritz or Crystal Parks could have averaged that. Olivias prolly had the most expensive low denoms, so certainly a contender as well.

What direction or any other hints?
10years ago focus wasnt so extreme on Paulsons. Weren‘t the Bud Jones Maxamillion highly thought?

the only Maximilian’s that went $5+ were the house $5’s and the $500’s. The ones were never found in quantity iirc.

Let's see... PNY, Paulson 1998 James Bond, Dunes, Vineyards.

Go back to before 2006 and you could order inlaid custom TR King for .89 each. Go back before 2000 or so and you could order custom Paulsons. I think BCC closed around 2010 or so?

I was thinking of my CT days: Sets I remember coming out, PNY, Ambassador Plaza, Maxamillions, New Sonny’s, Caesar’s of the Seas, Casinos International, Ritz Carlton, Crystal Parks. Some of the fantasy chips (CDI, Pyramid Casino, etc) But I don’t really remember anything being stupid high prices. Bud Jones seemed to be worth more back then than now.

In terms of most popular chips a decade ago or longer, I’d probably start with the Paulson Chips mold sets in 2005, and specifically the Pharoah’s Club set. Much of the core membership of this forum (who largely migrated here in late 2014) was previously involved in a chip discussion site that was formed around the time of that set.

As Inca911 and others have mentioned, Vineyards were also quite popular then, and Ritz, Condado, Crystal Park, and Olivia’s were nicer, rarer sets of the day. The leaded, Paulson THC fantasy lines were still cheaper and more abundant too, such as Le Cove, Scandia, ‘98 CDI, etc.

It’s been 10 or 12 years since China Clay Chips became a thing, so those were pretty popular a decade ago I guess.

Some folks more familiar with Jim’s ChipRoom sales can probably list off some of the popular early retired casino sets that were made available ten years ago. Empress and PCA might have been that long ago.

The influx of retired casino chips to the home market, coupled with the exit of 2-3 of the 4 major compression clay chip manufacturers, changed the chipping game in a big way over the time period you are asking about. There are also some neat hybrid ceramic and injection-molded alternatives now that did not exist then. Chipco ceramics were available as customs instead.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that they never made custom chips for Molly’s Game, since her actual game DID have custom chips for security reasons.
Just like in the "Battle of the Bulge" you have post-WWII American M47 Patton tanks acting as WWII German Tiger tanks.
Let alone that Alexander, Leonidas, Cleopatra, Antonius, you name it, were all fluent in 20th-century English. :ROFLMAO:

Again, due to "poetic license" even Homer had the Trojans speak Greek and communicate with their Greek enemies in the latter's language.:)

There was a thread about this earlier. Eagle-eyed PCF moviegoers noted that they did introduce some customs (custom labels) later in the movie.

Some interesting discussion further in the thread about how underground clubs and private games often really do use crappy chips, which seems mind-boggling to us but apparently really is a thing.

Bahamia, PCA and Empress were all around 10 years ago and and the high denoms were in that $5-10 range

10-15 years ago there was interest in a much broader and more interesting variety of chips. CiCs were still being phased out of use (e.g., at the Sahara) in Vegas, and sets like the Grand Casino Mullet Bay (still my favorite chips ever) were commanding premium prices on CT and eBay.

The Playboy Bud Jones chips were going pretty strong for a while and also Condado Beach Resort among the others already listed here.

I agree with you on making no sense for them to not have secure chips. But maybe the penalty for getting caught at an underground club with outside chips is harsh enough to keep most people from trying.

Crystal Parks and Vineyards were hot hot hot when I got into my big first swing.

Asking this for a friend...no seriously! ;) He has a pretty substantial set of Grand Casino Mullet Bay Snappers, 5's, 25's, 100's, and 500's from both primary and secondary racks. Any SWAG (some wild ass guess) on a per/chip value these days?

My guess would be about $2 each. Do his identification of pri and sec correspond with the lower and higher ChipGuide numbers for each denom?

Oh, and how many are there in "substantial"? :cool
