Moral Dilemma - chip advice please (2 Viewers)

I would assume that some of you guys will get after people for being hard on your chips though. If you're spending 4 to 5 k on your set I can understand not wanting to use them as much because there are so many people who don't appreciate a good set.

Sadly, I've had all but #12. However, since this is rural middle Tennessee, I suspect that my players are literally packing more heat than the local police department. In the event of a home invasion, I would probably have a new gun, and we would all get a laugh as the would be burglar pissed his pants.
So whats the etiquette on that? Does the gun go to the host, or the person who actually disarmed the perp? I guess the polite thing to do would be to give it to the host, but at that point, everybody has their guns out, so etiquette might be out the window.

put them in play and you'll quickly forget about it. It's like that first scratch on a new car. Hurts, but then you can relax. Also, if Paulsons get dirty it is very easy to clean them with a bit of water and TSP. Not even much elbow grease. I've gotten chips covered in hooker juice to be sparkling clean. The water afterwards was definitely a bio hazard though.
^ Best advice here. The car analogy is perfect.

If it’s your first Paulson set and they’re mint it makes complete sense for you to be worried about them and would want to keep them in pristine condition. Like a car though you’ll enjoy it more by using them. Once that first scratch inevitably happens, no matter how hard you try to keep them safe, it’ll feel like a weight of your chest and you’ll start enjoying your chips to the fullest.

P.S. what kind of chips we talking about? Jacks?

I think "Large pot with rules irregularity where the right decision is questioned and people start yelling" would have to be near the top of my list.

I don't keep my new car (no matter how nice or expensive) in the garage -- it's meant to be driven and enjoyed. And I play with my chips, too -- all of them, no matter how nice or expensive.

If I cant play with them, I'm selling. Haven't run across that problem yet.

So how much damage to a new or mint chip is actually done by pot splashing. I would think this is the typical chip abuse that goes on. (Besides Davin's tiddlywinker)

Damage to the sharp corner of the rolling edgechip face transition, mostly. Less damage risk with older leaded chips, and less on THC mold chips vs RHC chips.

Kinda silly question but are leaded chips dangerous to your health? I mean I've read all about lead poisoning but has anyone actually had lead poisoning from repeatedly handling leaded chips?

So I can grind them up and inhale? :)

Immediately thought of this

No risk from normal intended use. Precautions should be taken when grinding, drilling, or milling leaded chips to prevent inhalation of any chip dust particles, or if handling brand new chalky chips (rarely an issue any longer these days) -- you don't want to inhale or ingest leaded chip dust.

And don't put them in your mouth or french kiss them, no matter how much you love 'em.

Also betting on three excerpts from above getting quoted in the ooct.

I FEEL GUILTY USING THEM. I dont i to get them dirty or get flee bites on the edges. I want to organize them in creative edge spot patterns in the trays and put them on shelves to look at. I am afraid of using the chips to play with so that i

A set unused, is a useless set.

Play them.

Has anyone on here had a home invasion? There is this group of guys that play with at the casino I go to and they used to have a 2-5 home game that got robbed at gunpoint. The story gets told by many regulars and apparently it was inside job.

Nope. Too much lead detracts such thoughts. That and proper vetting process of players.

It is always an inside job - it just depends on the degree.
Unfortunately, poker games of any significant size (what's on the table plus what's in the player's pockets) need to be treated like Fight Club.
And, what's that first rule of Fight Club? Exactly!

We could discuss situational awareness and planning, but that would be another thread.

Back a million years ago when I was a young pup still living in Massachusetts I hosted a small $20 buyin NL tourney at my apartment and would advertise on Craigslist for players to fill it, I hosted up to 2 tables.

I met a lot of cool people, even had folks make the hour+ journey out from the Boston area to play with us. But one day we had a new guy who had reached out to play that was attending.

He calls me while he's enroute and then mentions "oh hey, btw I carry a pistol on me for protection" and I didn't think any issue with it, since the guy was being upfront about it, and hey, this is a $20 buyin tourney, nothing nosebleed worth robbing.

Well the guy told me his name was "John Smith" but when he showed up he looked more like a Hector Rodriguez. And throughout the event he was winning some pretty big hands everytime he dealt, plus he was showing off his pistol to everyone.

It obviously made the regulars in my game uncomfortable. The guy went on to win the tournament, and a lot of people thought he was setting the deck. Needless to say, he wasn't invited back.

But that's about the closest call I had as far as firearms in my home game.

As for the OP, your riddle is easy to solve. Buy TWO sets of Paulsons, put one into play and keep one in the box for that collectors goodness.

Since someone brought this up.
People with their backs to the door should hit the ground to give those facing the door a clear field of fire. :cautious:
Note that it is bad etiquette to accidentally shoot your poker buddy in the face (unless you are a former Vice President).

Seriously, a good steel door in a good steel frame which is LOCKED and a couple security cameras should either completely deter an invasion or slow it to the point that defensive precautions (funnel of death) can be enacted.
Remember kids, proper prior planning prevents piss-poor performance.

USA USA USA!

I don't think you are being dramatic. I have the same problem with the sets I collect. I built up a Pharaohs set specifically for home games and then I couldn't put them to use. I end up using starbursts in home games...

I feel the same way bro, I have a bunch of sets still mint never put in play, and will stay that way because the people I play with have no apreciation for chips, I once had to tell someone put down the chips cus they were putting one chip between two chips and squeezing all three and pulling the middle chip out causing them to make a loud snap..... crying in my head lol

I had a guy bouncing bets off the dealer button like he was playing beer pong. I thought I was going to burst a blood vessel.

Thanks everyone for talking some sense into me. So starting this weekend... THE CLAY IS HITTING THE TABLE!!!! My players wont appreciate them... they will chip... and it will hurt a little bit at first, but like someone said...I'm not going to buy a Ferrari just to never drive it. I will however probably keep 5 of each denomination put away nice and safe for me to look at in mint condition for years to come. :D

You may also be surprised. My mint Paulsons have hit the table a number of times. My mint CPCs have been on the table many times. There aren't any perceptible flea bites.

Home players tend to be easier on chips than casino patrons. They aren't shuffled for hundreds of hours, tossed 6' down a craps table, or carried to/from a casino in a pocket with keys. Eventually, they will wear, but in home use, it will likely take much longer than you think.

So I originally came to PCF to find Casino style/quality chips to play with at my home poker games with the family. I have been using the ceramic Day of the Dead chips for a couple months now and I love them! They feel good, they sound good, they look awesome, i don't feel guilty throwing them into a crashing pile in the pot and more importantly, I dont mind eating Cheetos while playing. My dilemma here is I am hooked to Pauslon chips now.... the chalkiness, the sharp edges, the color combinations and my favorite is the rad patterns the edge spots make on barrels and racks.. uggghghghfg. sorry.

My point is now that i am close to having a playable set.... I FEEL GUILTY USING THEM. I dont want to get them dirty or get flee bites on the edges. I want to organize them in creative edge spot patterns in the trays and put them on shelves to look at. I am afraid of using the chips to play with so that i don't mess them up or get them dirty. Anyone else have this problem or am I being dramatic?!?!

I get where you are coming from. When I was a kid I got over collecting ball cards because after the initial rush of opening packs and then sleeving/casing the cards, You were done. :(

With poker chips, you can collect, create if you want a custom set and play with what you are collecting. It's really the best of both worlds and seeing new edge spot/color/artwork combos is always an eye-opening experience to me.

Get your chips into play and enjoy what you have while making some memories along the way.;)

My 2 cents:tup:
