So lately Ive been torn on getting a new chip set. We play usually once week with non denom chip set. Example. All chips $.50 (no matter color) yellows $1.00 $50 buy in. Once a month we'll do $1.00 all chips $5.00 yellow $100 buy in. So Ive been looking to get a new set of 1000. Ive kinda settled on ceramics as it seems decent bang for the buck. Tiki or Nevada jacks. But today I sat at my pc looking at chips, while my daughter sits next to me playing with old casino chips ive collected over the years. After she ran off doing something else, I grabbed a nice stack of paulson and started shuffling. Took out the a few non pualsons, did the same and then grabbed our current set and did it. It can be done with all, but it would be a lie if I didnt say the shuffling the paulson didn't make me happy doing it more. And not by just a little either.

So, it got me thinking instead of buying a Tiki or NJ ceramic set, just piece together a set, one rack at a time. Whatever floats my boat I suppose. Because we don't play specific denom, I dont see an issue, and we get a quality chip instead. Come poker night, each can grab his favorite rack and call it that. Anyone have mixed sets? Whats your thoughts on mixed paulson sets?

Chips have denominations for a reason. :)

Sounds like hot-stamped Paulson starbursts or roulette chips would be a good fit for your game. No denoms, plenty of colors to choose from, variety of chip conditions available, and very reasonably-priced for used chips.

roulette chips

This ...... there are some really nice condition Paulson roulette chips in great colors, for cheap.

Lets face it, this isn't RCF (roulette chip forum), so we need to put those great chips to other uses (like poker) (y)

You could liberate those chips to their glory day status again :D

^ we dont. Its wither .50 or 1 depending on night. It started years ago when we played lower denom and ran out of chips. We upped the chip value and made them all the same. Not ideal, but we’ve been doing it for so long now, dont think anyone wants to change.

Another vote for Starbursts...

As stated, Paulson Roulette or Paulson Star Busts seem to be the way to go for you.

Have you tried CPC ? (Classic Poker Chips, previously ASM)

They are also compression mold clay. If you just want them to be of different color, you can just order solid, without inlay and basic color for 0.92 each.

You can even get your initial stamped on it for 14c per chip + fixed $26 fee.

Just to give you another option if you have not thought about it.

Kid.

The more I think about it, the more Im liking the idea of mixed rack sets. At .50 a chip $50 buy in, each player gets a rack. Have 10 different racks, different denoms and designs, will be neat I think for buddies to pick what they want. Would be fun watching who picks which rack. Maybe that would look terrible, but playing it over in my mind seems fun

As a side benefit, you'd know exactly where each chip in your stack came from for some great trash talking possibilities. "ooooo... this pretty pink chip used to be yours and now it's mine... bwahahaha"

Or go to your local casino and buy a bunch of racks of $1 chips..... you are just renting them for free. Turn 'em in for cash when you decide you want something elae.

Not a bad idea, but for these purposes, I think I’d rather good old starbursts than what most casinos have for $1’s. They’re THC leaded, they’re usually in better condition, and they’re maybe probably cheaper.

HAHA!! That already happens npw. Certain colors we have less of, so a few at the table start out with a different colors anyways. Always trash talk. If everyone had different chips, it would be interesting.

Lately? You've got to be kidding. Have you seen what prices Starbursts get to these days? And I'm a perpetrator!

OP is talking about used chips -- big difference in price.

Mixed sets are not where you mix all the chips together. Ugh.

Are you playing limit poker at least?

Mint chips in exotic colors might go for more, but it's still pretty easy to score lightly used starbursts in common colors on eBay for under a buck apiece - sometimes well under.
