I'm new to the game and enjoy the heck out of it , although I suck .
I've sat in on a few $1 / $2 cash games and was surprised to see some pots approaching $1000 .
Are there any games in the US or Canada that have lower stakes?
I travel a fair bit so location isn't super important.

Low limit poker games can get big but are generally smaller. Chips go in $2 or $4 at a time, for example. Very different game from NL though.

For lower NL, look for home games or online maybe?

Sadly, fixed limit games are extremely hard to find outside of Vegas and LA now.

4/8 limit hold’em is what I got started with playing in a casino, I think it’s a good level to start at if the money worries you. I like fixed limit poker a lot. I play because I like the game and enjoy the social aspects of poker, and I think limit has a lot to offer in that regard.

There’s also nothing better than sun-running and piling up stacks and towers of checks I can’t even see over.

While traveling, you could use pokeratlas.com or their app to generate leads and then call the casino or card room for specifics.

For example, I've played a card room in my area that is $1/$2 NLHE, but the buy ins are uncapped, which can lead to the $1000 pots you witnessed. I just returned from a trip to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas where it was $1/$3 NLHE, but the buy in was capped at $300 with top ups to $500 at the table. The chip stacks and pots were more managable compared to the uncapped $1/$2 game...
