Bored at work and saw that there isn't a write up for Hollywood Casino Grantville on PCF.

Grantville has a Hollywood Casino in the middle of nowhere. It is surrounded by fields, an Exxon gas station and a mountain. However the casino inside is pretty big for being in such a remote location.

The casino as a whole:
As I said earlier, it's big for not being a major casino you'd find in a major city such as Rivers in Pittsburgh, Live! in Philly or the National Harbor/Horseshoe in Baltimore. I've been there around 5 times now. A couple times during peak times. During peak there are around 10+ blackjack tables open, a few poker-variant table games such as UTH and 3CP and Baccarat. During off-times you can still find a couple blackjack tables open alongside the variant games & baccarat. The place has tons of slots & the food there is incredible. It's also cheap if you have any rewards. If you're a veteran you get $60 worth of Penn Cash which converts to $120 worth of food & alcohol. There's also a steakhouse inside (no idea if its good or not).

Figured I'd give an overview of that incase anyone here wants to get their degen on. Or punt their poker profits after a long session.

Poker Room
The Bad:

So the poker room here is very new. It opened this year back in July/August after being closed for 4 years due to Covid. As a result some of the dealers are new to poker. Furthermore the coffins for promotions are pretty low. I went 2 weeks ago and the BBJ was around $50k. The high hand promotions are only on Wednesdays & Sundays from 4 pm - 9 pm. $300 every 30 minutes. This really sucks for me as I can't play on those days. I could be wrong but I'm speculating that they're trying to draw players to off-days.

However the worst drawback is that the poker room is right next to a stage.... where subpar local bands or singers make their stage very often. I don't mean to rip on these local artists or anything but the few times I've been it has been absolutely horrible. A borderline distraction.

Rake is iffy but ok I think. 10% up to $6.

Lastly the cashout cage is shared with the rest of the Casino. It's not a big deal since it's not a huge Casino but it can get annoying if there is a long line of people cashing out.

The Good:
The room itself is nice. It is located in the far corner of the casino. The chairs are comfortable and the tables are nice. The chips are old but fine. Besides the karaoke music next door, the atmosphere is nice.

The best thing about this casino is the player base. A lot of recreational and sociable people. I've been 6 times since they opened (which is a small sample size albeit) but I did not see a ton of strong players or professionals. So the last two times I actually counted how many times I saw a 3 bet during my sessions. I am NOT exaggerating. My last 2 $1/$3 sessions both accounted for around 4 hours each (8 in total). In the first session besides myself, I counted 1 3-bet on the river. I did not see a single 3-bet pre-flop. On the 2nd session I definitely had better people at my table, but it still wasn't much better. Five 3-bets in total & two 4-bets. Pretty sure my previous sessions were along this line as well.

Hopefully I don't come off as smug or arrogant but from my observations it did not seem like there were a ton of strong players.

Despite only having around 11 tables, they offered 1/3, 2/5 & PLO.

TLDR:

Good

  • Atmosphere
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Good amount of players relative to the Casino size.
    • Peak times you'll find a waitlist but it's not egregious.
  • Playerbase
Bad
  • Karaoke/music right next to the poker room....
  • Lack of promotions.
  • No tournaments.
  • Shared cash out cage.
  • Room closes at 12 am each night.
  • No bomb pots (subjective but I think they're fun)

98% of you will never come here but I figured for the South Central PA folks I'd write up my experience here. Overall I would recommend it, especially if it's close to you. If you want to play cash I would come here over driving a long distance to Baltimore or Philly (assuming Grantville is significantly closer to you).

Looks like a nice room. Hollywood usually does it up pretty nice and upscale.

Yup for sure. I think the room itself is the best I've played at (not counting in the stage next door). Better than all the rooms in Texas and I would say it's slightly better than Maryland Live.
