Hey all, hoping you can help me out. I'm looking to buy a set of 500 chips for buddy for his birthday. I'm thinking a set of 500 in 4 colors (100-200-100-100) and I want to put a picture of his ugly mug on them. I'm working with his family to get a handful of pics and would like to find a reputable company who can make the set. He's an avid player who hosts regular cash games and tournaments with be He already has a few thousand plastic 1.5 inch chips, so this would be sort of a special set he could use as he wishes. He's not a chip collector or anything, so I'm not super concerned with getting a specific type or a super high end chip. I just want to make sure I end up with chips that the picture looks good on, and I want the pic (and the chip overall) to be able to stand up to use for a monthly cash game or tournament.

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as material (clay composite vs ceramic) or a reputable company that can handle this? His birthday is about 30 days out, and I'm OK with spending around $500. Thanks.

I second the @ABC Gifts and Awards suggestion. I have a ton of their chips and love them.

500 custom 39mm ceramics from brpro poker or abc gifts and rewards will run you .84/chip + tax and shiping.

ceramics can be had cheaper if ordered direct from one of the companies in china but i doubt you could have it done in 30 days with overseas shipping

At 84¢+, consider the PCF 600 breakdown for expanded use: 100-200-200-80-20.

For example:
100x $0.25
200x $1
200x $5
80x $25 (or $20)
20x $100

600 chips = $5225 (or $4825)

The above breakdown could cover a .25/.25 - 1/2 1 table cash games or a one table T1 base tournament.

would help if we knew what cash game stakes he played, you might not need fracs.

general advice is do not use the same chips for cash games that you do for tournaments, but sounds like your friend is already doing that with plastic chips anyway

Thanks for all the responses. Typically his cash games are no bigger than .25 .50 and he uses the same chips for both. The $25 tournament chips become .25 the $50 become .50 etc. I spoke to him today asking about how he structures things and he says he usually runs deep stack freezouts, $25-$50 first levels with 15k starting stacks. He said he uses 7 colors, $25, $50, $100, $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000. He said he has 25 $5k and 25 $10k chips and has never run out.

So I'm thinking the following breakdown....
100 x $25
100 x $50
125 x $100
100 x $500
50 x $1,000
25 x $5,000
25x $10,000

That should get him enough person tournaments or one 10 handed full ring cash game.

Thanks for the help.

your going to want more 1k, in a t15000 the 100 are going to be your 1st workhorse chip and the 1k will be the next workhorse chip.

I would also suggest no 50, you dont need a transition between 25 and 100 in either cash or tournament.

I would normally say you need less 500 but I am guessing the 500 is what he uses as his $5 in cash.

I wouldn’t crossover tourney and cash chips. Main reason:someone could pocket a couple $1000 or $5000 chips from the tourney, and sneak them into the cash game for free money. Secondary reason: it’s harder to start the cash game before the tourney has ended.

I’d recommend continuing to play the tourneys with his current plastic chips, but get him a nice custom cash set. He can upgrade the tourney set later if he wants.

Heres a good cash breakdown:
25¢ x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 200
$25 x 80
$100 x 20

600 chips, total bank of $5225. If that’s way too much bank and too many chips, do something like the following $500 chip breakdown:

25¢ x 100
$1 x 160
$5 x 160
$25 x 80
Total bank of just under $3000. Adjust quantities to suit your needs.

This is a good suggestion. If he plays more cash than tourney or and equal amount it would be great to get him a quality cash set.

If he rarely play cash and does mostly tourney get him a quality tourney set.

Yeah thanks. Was doing the math and noticed it wasn't going to add up the way I had it.

Fair point on the mixing cash and tournament stuff and someone pocketing the large chip to insert at a later cash. I'm not so worried about that as he plays 90% tournaments. The only time he plays cash is with a close group of lifelong friends or when his tourney draws less than ten. In the latter instance they usually play a sit and spin then cash, or cash all night. The way he does the tournaments is making this a bit challenging. He caps his tournaments at 24 seats. Maybe I'll start looking at making his preferred buy in for one player and extrapalating that out.

Hey, I think I have it figured out. The math was a little funky due to his preferred 15,000 buy in with $25 and $50 1st level. Since he runs a 24 person max format I figured out a solid starting chip stack format, then multiplied by 25 to account for lost chips etc. Here is what I came up with...

Starting stack = 15,000
4 x $25 = 100
2 x $50 = 100
8 x $100= 800
4 x $500 = 2000
2 x $1000 = 2000
2 x $5,000 = 10,000

Multiplying all by 25 that gives me...
100@$25
50@$50
200@$100
100@$500
50@$1,000
50@$5,000
550 chips at .84 = $462 plus shipping.

Converting dollars to pennies form the cash games ($25 becomes .25 etc.) that gives him $1250 to spread a couple tables of .25 .50 which seems like plenty. I THINK this is the route I am going. Does anyone see a huge hole in this plan?

If he runs 90% tournament I would just get him a nice tournament set

t15000 with 25/50 blinds for 24 people with 500 chips can be done just not with the standard recommended starting stacks

Hello and welcome! Custom ceramics from BR Pro poker (aka @ABC Gifts and Awards ) are excellent. Custom labels on China clay chips like the majestic blanks from @Apache would also be decent.

600 chips should cover a 2 table tournament up to 20 people with starting stacks of 8/8/4/7/1.
$25 x 160
$100 x 160
$500 x 80
$1000 x 160
$5000 x 40

Stretching another 100 chips (40 more each of $25 and $100, and 20 $1000) allows for up to 16 players with the more preferable starting stack of 12/12/5/6/1, and 24 players at 8/8/4/7/1.

The $50 is not a useful denomination for poker. Generally you want value jumps of 4x-5x between denominations, with the $500 to $1000 being the notable exception.

That's a nice layout above. Someone else recommended BR PRO poker so I am looking into them. Has anyone had any dealings with The Poker Depot? They have an interesting online design tool where you can upload images and design everything in real time.
