I don't think I'm really interested in that style. Thanks though!
I agree with you. If you really want a set with fracs, nothing else would look particularly good with that set. You can't just "add a frac" to a ceramic set that never had a frac like you can murder and relabel a clay chip to go with an existing set. Unless there's an option I haven't thought of, I think it would be a dumb choice.

After looking at a lot of stuff I think this might be what I'll do. Just need to figure out what to get... And if I do something custom I'm ok paying a little more.
The sets there are pre-customized, if you want something different you need to reach out to a designer here @mattross1313 or @Colquhoun can help you out. Is there something in particular your looking for?

After looking back at my chip set purchases for the past, almost 10 years, I'd have to say the chip set I like the least, is the one I had made custom, on Chipco blanks, followed by a distant second of my GCR set that was part of a group buy, also many years ago. Listen to your soul, before you take the plunge. For me, what I really dig about chips is knowing that hundreds of folks, before me, were placing bets, celebrating, and having a damn good time with the same chips that are now being used in my home game. Playing a legit Vegas Tropicana, Sands, El Cortez grail set from the 60's would be F'ing amazing! I don't quite have that kind of scratch, lol, but I was playing my Hard Rock Albuquerque Chipcos just last night, and they're still just as great, if not better, as they were the day I bought them. Plus selling your customs, CPC's aren't necessarily going to appeal, at least to guys like me, when/if you decide to sell. These would be an easy choice, well within your budget, and while they aren't the flashiest neon customs... they are 100% the real deal.

Thread 'Isle Casino Use Chipco Cash and Tourney Sets - Sale is Live.' https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...co-cash-and-tourney-sets-sale-is-live.114438/

(You're welcome Josh)

Obsolete real sets all the way!

If you are in a rush or are impatient, buy the cheaper ABS plastic chips like what you are originally considering. There’s nothing wrong in doing this, especially if you are hosting only 2-4 games a year. If you go this route, look for chips that are labeled as “smooth”. I know ThePokerStore.com has some fairly nice ones. And buy the samples they have to feel them in your hand. It makes a difference.

And be cognizant of exactly how many you are buying and how many you need. There are tons of great threads here that help guide you through all of this. See @Machine for some great threads on this.

If you think you want to do more with this hobby, pause the urge for that impulse buy and do some studying and research. Read lots of the threads, use the search tool, and ask questions. Take some time to figure out what YOU like, not what we like.

Maybe you discover a chip set that is YOUR holy grail set and you desire to collect it over time. Maybe you want to host a monthly game and want to use clay Paulsons or Italian plastics. Maybe you just find that you want to collect some of these beauties to put on a shelf for display and you can sometimes hold them and hug them and call them George.

The rabbit hole is deep.

So I have some Apache samples coming. I think I'm a fan of the Dunes and I like that there are $20 chips. The only negative is that I'm not a huge fan of the pink $.25 chips, but I believe that's what the casino had them in. I would also get the Dunes topper so that the table would have a nice look with the chips if I go that route.

After reading positive reviews on Majestics, I'm kind of excited to see what the oversized poker chips are like. But the only downside here is that they don't have a $20 chip and I don't see an option to get blanks.

Anyone have any recommendations on what my options would be to get a $20 Majestic chip of I like them?

(I was just looking for a $20 chip going off the recommendation of how easy it is since so many people have $20 bills, it's easy to hand out $20 chips)

Majestics are not oversized chips, Royals are the oversized version of the same mold S Majestics. You can always get blank chips and put $20 labels on them. Good luck, I think Majestics and Royals are a cut above the Dunes China clays but that’s just personal preference.

Sorry I misspoke! I meant Royals. I got samples of both.

Where can I get blanks? It looked like they didn't sell them anymore on the site, or maybe I was looking in the wrong place.

I might want all blanks and put on my own labels.

I'm new here too! Poker Knights / cheaper China clays are OKAYYYY. Let me know what you think of the apache samples, I have never used them. The older China clays, I remember back in the 2010s when I had a set, they are slippery and sometimes a stack will fall over. I would take the dive down the rabbit hole to find real clay, if I were you ... Be patient and replace your dice chips over time. I'd start by looking for 1s and 5s, you don't need higher denoms and you can just use your dice chips for your frac ... let me know if you want to buddy up to search together!!

Use search on Apache’s site for blank royals, he usually has them. If not, the stock labels come off with a little effort, it has been done here many times.

It continues to grow every day that I read this forum. I'd say now it's around $5-$600
Welcome to the club lol.

I’d suggest buying samples of these 3 types of chips-

China Clay
Tina Ceramic
BR Pro Poker Ceramics

They are all within your budget and will give you enough flavor to develop a personal taste.

NOTE - beware of buying CPC samples. A set of those will require an increase in budget of 2-3X and you’ll fall in love.

Gotcha.

I’d highly recommend going Tina Ceramic then. You can likely squeeze both sets within your budget.
Well, the budget might be bumped up if I'm looking at 2 sets. I just can't justify $1,000 for a single set (right now) but could potentially for 2 sets (and/or 1200 chips, etc - but I thought it was recommended to have a different tourney set and not just higher denoms of the same set.)

So initially was thinking of a cash set of Dunes, or Taj, or Pharaohs and then maybe a tourney of Apache Royals or Empires.

We'll see how the samples shake out.

SIDE NOTE - I just found these THCs a week ago locally. Seem to be vintage. Would possibly be interested in selling or trading or something. Probably wouldn't be good to murder these?

I found some info on them here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/identify-please…are-these-paranoids.79902/

Just a little above your $600 top of budget, BUT... It's a big set and you could sell off a rack of $25, and maybe a few $5s & $1s if you really needed to recover some funds. And it comes with Gear labels to convert the snappers into quarters. Pretty cool turnkey set. And it's real Paulson clay, not china clays or ceramics.

Good plan.

And I don’t know much about those THC solids- they look cool for sure. They could be a milled candidate, maybe they already have been milled.

It’s not impossible to build a THC set with your budget. Would take a quick eye, and quick trigger finger, knowing when and when not to pull. Paulson seems to be the chips everyone wants if you have the funds. These things can stack like bricks. Me personally - I prefer CPC but to each their own; I may be in the minority.

Those would definitely sell, they look to be in pretty good condition! My advice would be to sell them, add that to your budget. Building a set around them would balloon your budget and it wouldn't be easy.

FYI, Paulson did not make paranoids, so these are likely chips that someone milled and relabeled with "paranoid" designs.

How much is the seller asking for them? If under $1 a chip, they'd still be a great deal.

Not a bad set, and a GREAT price per chip. Might get some flack for this, but I'm not the biggest fan of chips from 'random casino and random city but they're Paulsons' unless I've been there or its a well-known place. However, I would be interested in just putting new labels on them but I see that some of the 5's have oversized labels and I wouldn't be able to re-label them :( Contemplating it though! Thanks for sending it!

Oh I have these in my possession. Picked them up a few days ago.

And they aren't labels, they are stamped right on there. Not sure how they were made.

OK, looks like they are in fact true inlays applied by Paulson. I've not personally seen these before but maybe others have.

Maybe our resident historian, @BGinGA can tell us more about these?

It would be a mistake to murder these chips.
Care to elaborate? I assume you are referring to the orange chips. Do you know anything more about them? They are certainly interesting, but if I purchased them at a good price and needed them in a set, I wouldn't hesitate to murder them. Unless there was some particularly good reason not to. I had hoped that Dave might weigh in, but he hasn't yet. So spill the beans! LOL.

looks like they're textured, so there's some value in that? Could also be old and paper inlays which would be a bitch to murder anyways.
