Cash Game Limit Set Breakdowns and General Questions (2 Viewers)

Playing a bit of the devil's advocate. Is it possible we associate casino's us of 3-chip and 4-chip games with the preponderance of $1 chips in the casino? When I first started playing limit Hold'Em in casinos, many years ago... it was $2/$4. Guess what, we used $1 chips. Playing $3/$6 and $4/$8 still uses $1 chips. A casino ordering more of a chip that already exists, makes more sense that ordering a $2 chip to play 2-chip $4/$8.

I've never played limit $10/$20, but I assume they use $5 chips... again 2-chip game... or do they use snappers? I think PCF'ers use snappers... maybe casino's do to. In a $20/$40 limit game, do they use $5s (probably)? I have seen $10 chips from Cali casinos (Garden City, Cali Bell)... I am inclined to think the $10 chips were used in the $20/$40 game.

Again, playing devil's advocate here... is it possible we have grown accustomed to the 3-chip and 4-chip games because those are the ones we have played in the casino and the casino is "just" using a chip they already have a bunch of?

I've played a lot of limit, mostly up to 8/16 but sometimes higher. Most rooms that I've played at use $1 for 4/8, but some (bigger/busier) rooms use $2. For 6/12 and 8/16, it has always been $2 that I have seen. If the SB folds in 6/12, the dealer has to break a $2 to give change. Other than that, it works pretty well.

I can see why you would think that might be the case, but it is not. The card room that I play at frequently (one of the biggest limit rooms in the US) has both $1, & $2 chips & the $2 chips do NOT get used for $4/8 limit for the reasons I stated above. My proof of why they do this is that when we started the card room 20 yrs ago they tried $10/$20 with $5 chips (2 chip game) and it did not work at all. The game quickly died and there was no interest. They then tried 8/16 with $2 chips (4 chip game) and 15/30 (3 chip game) and both games have been tremendously successful. Eventually all the players wanted to turn the 15/30 into 20/40 so now there is just 8/16 & 20/40 (both 4 chip games) They also have 3/6 with $1 chips and occasionally spread 4/8 too. Never were any 1 chip games and all 2 chip games have gone the way of the dodo bird..... extinct

The smallest game a $10 chip is used in is a 40/80 game

Capping a table at 7-8 players allows you to play a large variety of games. You can also mix in a max big bet format with fixed limit for even more variety. Lots of fun to be had at a limit table!

Holy crap!! I was literally just wondering if a $40 chip for the large denomination would be ridiculous. From what I've read, 20x your workhorse chip is optimal for your large denomination (I think that's what I read), so I found my self thinking, "hmmmm, a $40 chip seems ridiculous????"

Now I'm happy as hell to see it in action!!

For future proofing would it be better to just put a 1 on the workhorse and a 20 on the value chip and just have the base unit be whatever the stakes you wanted to play?

I know for people that I play with now they were surprised when they asked what value each of my normal cash sets chips were and I said “uhh, it is on the chip”. That to now think in units might throw them off. But in other betting games like craps you often talk about strategy in units and so there is some overlap.

This is another version of doing non-denominated chips, and that may be an answer for some people. But for me, when talking customs, the proper denomination is integral to the design, anything else comes off as cutting a corner to me.
