@Granadol , these are the ones to avoid. Except for the ones in the left. Still beating my dumb ass up for selling those.

Welcome!!

You are the poster child for what I have always said. F the budget and go for broke right up front. People start with some B.S. budget...get ceramics...then move to "affordable" RHCs...and then have to have THCs (which are okay I guess).

PLEASE save yourself a shit ton of money, by not buying all that crap that will just leave you wanting more....AND JUST MOVE DIRECTLY TO TRKs!!! :ROFLMAO:

Enjoy the adventure my friend!!
I dunno. Mint RHCs in low denoms are cheap as hell these days. I'd advise people to give those a shot. Because if you can be happy with those (and a lot of people can) you'll save yourself a lot of money.
Leaded TRKs are great, no doubt, but I'm not sure I'd put the ahead of leaded THCs. Neck and neck, for sure. But I'm not willing to say one is better than the other.

How can you tell if they are leaded thc’s?

i totally agree with the OP and went through exactly the same process. Then you learn stay in your budget, start off with a starter home, build equity trade it up to mid tier home and repeat till you buy the mansion you want. then buy cheap chips to give to your friends who like to shuffle your dream set....

Personal preference Leaded TRK> Leaded RHC > Leaded THC > BCC > CPC CSQ mold > everything else! Lol probably get booed off the stage but I love leaded RHC chips! The large lip gives them a unique feel and seem a bit more dense than THCs, I am sure that is because of the design and not the chip compound but hey... we all like different stuff!

Completely agree. I was VERY happy with RHC and oversized label sets for years. Especially since demand and prices were low. But sooner or later, you F up and buy THCs and TRKs. Then it's like trying to satisfy a heroin addiction with baby aspirin.

Here’s my 2¢, feel free to accept or reject the notion. Acquiring chips even in a market facing low supply can be an endless road. There’s ton’s of stuff out there to admire, perhaps even a bunch of different sets you tell yourself you wish you had. I don’t personally believe that’s the right mentality to have when stepping into this arena.

Start by experimenting with some samples, gauge what is more obtainable than the other both in terms of your budget and available quantity. Once you’ve done that, hone in on the stuff you like the most and stick to the plan. It’ll be tempting to grab random racks here and there but all that’ll do is rob you of the ability to make a large purchase when one becomes available. A lot of times you’ll get the best deal on a set you really like when you buy all or most of it in one shot. Having a ton of random racks that tie up hundreds perhaps even thousands of dollars is just tying up money you’re probably going to need for the other good stuff.

You’re going to see a wide array of opinions regarding what’s nice, what isn’t, what’s the best, and what isn’t. In the end, they’re your chips and what’s nice in your eyes should be all that matters.

This one to me is the toughest but it’s doable. Once you’ve acquired what you like the most, be it one set, two, whatever...be content. We’re all lucky and privileged to be collecting these things. Once all this covid madness has boiled over, you can focus on getting all your new acquisitions on the felt as opposed to thinking about what you don’t have to put on that felt.

You know we own Borh including the world record ugliest Leaded THC (set???) Ever made!

Still hunting the $1s obviously.

This set is like a pug or bull dog, so damn ugly only its parents could love it! Lol @horseshoez is correct pick what you like. For me rather than matching edge spots or bright colors it is more important to keep it all original, sure I could pick better chips. But it wouldn't have the same meaning to me!

This place is like a high school cheerleading squad. They all want the hunky captain of the football team (named TRK) and his #1 wide receiver and running back (named THC and RHC). What they don't know is the water boy is hung like a horse and the other girls are partying with him with BJs (his name is Matsui).

Don't get fooled with the clay hype. Try some plastics (Matsui and BJ) and enjoy the experience :)

I probably shouldn't be asking this here, but maybe I'm under the wrong impression when it comes to my chips (which are nowhere near what you all are talking about, and I hope there's a list somewhere with all the acronyms). I thought at some point I would buy a complete set of chips all at once, after some deliberation on materials, possible custom design, etc. Now it seems maybe what you do is find one piece of a set you want to cobble together? Somebody set me straight!

Either are fine options. Learning more about what's possible, what's available, and what's affordable - and then deciding what will work best for you - is all part of the chipping journey.

Those are also options.

You can buy a custom set from @David Spragg at CPC.
An assembled set from @Spinettis Gaming
A set someone is selling in the classifieds.
Pull together a set from a vendor sale like @SpaceMonkey420 @Apache @The Chip Exchange or @TheChipRoom (and others I’m sure to have missed).
Order some custom ceramics from a number of great vendors like @SUN-FLY Poker Chips @ABC Gifts and Awards or @BR Pro Poker or through folks on Alibaba
Order some custom chips from Matsui or Abbiati.
Build a custom label set by buying racks, sending them to @Josh Kifer or others here for milling, then applying @Gear labels or perhaps getting @AK Chip to hot stamp them for you.
Snag a set from eBay or Craigslist list or....
There are countless options.

EDIT: I almost forgot Group Buys!
https://www.pokerchipforum.com/forums/group-buys.26/

If, however, you want a set of hunk QB chips from an long extinct casino that had highly desirable chips, it may take a while. Then again, @Windwalker has shown that smarts and perseverance can deliver magic.

Enjoy the journey, and most importantly, the chips!

Woah woah, that is bold putting any RHCs above THCs. I didn’t even know about leaded RHCs. What is an example of these? I believe I need to check this situation out.

Many RHC's are leaded, honestly my favorite it the textured inlay on the PCA secondary $1. Absolutely amazing chips and extremely undervalued. My Eldorado $1 HS chips are both RHC and THC and both leaded

Otherwise identical chips and I prefer the RHC feel. I understand they are definitely more susceptible to damage and I didn't say higher value or quality chip. Just based off feel, again I like the large lip on the RHCs, my Paragon quarters are not leaded? Well not sure but absolutely obsessed with the feel of those chips! Not a great pic but they have a very deep recess on those chips and truly an awesome feel to them

It's ok that we don't all agree, again try them all out and find what you like best right?

Oh wow. TIL! Ow I’ll have to check some out in person at some point. These all look fantastic! Thanks Ben

Listen, these are stunning and I’d trade any chips I have for them. But the reason they’re not a 10 out of 10, the reason probably no TRK set can be a ten out of ten for me, is the spots. TRKs have dainty little bashful edge spots. You can tell me it’s a matter of opinion (because technically it is) but if you tell me you like TRK’s stubby spots more than paulson’s big bold spots, I won’t believe you.

I’m a history buff mostly. I’m more intrigued with where a chip has been than what it looks like. Don’t get me wrong, looks are important to me but aren’t my overall number 1 reason for what I find attractive in a chip.
Can’t argue about Paulson spots, they do look fantastic most of the time.
