How often do you host games? (42 Viewers)

Usually every week or 2x a week. I host 10 players although might setup second table as we have about 50 players on the roster who are looking for games lol

Cash game once a month at my place. 8 players Dealer choice between Texas Hold'Em, Pineapple and Omaha
Bi weekly at a friends house, Cash game 6-7 players, all Omaha.

We host 2 tables of Mahjong, 8 people, 2-4 times a week for cash games. My mother-in-law and uncles/aunties use my home to play during the week. Everyone lives within a 15 mile radius. They are my hardcore players. They rotate homes on the other days. We play a separate immediate family only game for lower stakes on the weekends. This has been going on regularly for the last several years.

Curious on how often most of yall host games…

I’ve been thinking about upgrading my generic chip set, but I haven’t been hosting that consistently. How often/consistent were you hosting games before you started upgrading your set?

Or was it an upgrade your set and you started hosting more?
I started hosting about once a month about 25 years ago.

For the first couple years I had dice chips. Then the metal slugged WPT chips came out & I thought they were way cooler so I bought those and happily played with them for over a dozen years about twice a week.

About 10 years ago I pulled the trigger on my first couple Paulson sets: Pharaohs & WTHC. My crew thought I was crazy paying over $1.50/chip. So did I but I wanted the feel & more importantly the sound of real casino chips. Bought a real table and then a Shuffletech & thought I was done.

Then I came here for a few chips to round out my sets...and...

Bottom line is you don't need nice stuff to host often. I did 2x/week for 15 years with no problems. Since covid about once a week.

The difference now is I look forward to it more. Maybe because I love "my stuff" more. Maybe because I've met a bunch of people who appreciate it as much as me & get to play with them weekly. Maybe it's because hunting for chips is fun. Probably moAr reasons but I know spending all my cash isn't one of them!

The journey is fun, enjoy it.

It depends on how often we can get enough people to play.

Sometimes once a month, sometimes once every 2 months, sometimes twice a month.

I used to be the main host, but now there are others who also open up to hosting. I also ocassionally go to another game that runs every week and sometimes multiple times a week.

Mahjong :wow:

Not often enough :\

During summer, it is very hard to gather, at most bi-monthly.
During other times, once a month at most.

I try to host bi-monthly. We have a standard group of friends we always play with and life gets in the way most of the time for all of us to sync up a free weekend day. Would love to host more often, but life has other plans (for now)

Yes in the same vote pal! Usually due to my kids sports lol

I used to host about 15 times a year. Work and life have drastically changed that. I have hosted 3 times this calendar year :(

I wish my group could play once a month or even once every 6 weeks. Half only play for the social aspect, and it’s this half that usually loses. After a while, they got sick of losing and are only willing to lose $X per year for socialization, so games dwindled to about 2-3x a year.

For those that are able to play weekly or monthly, how do you keep the consistent money losers returning? Also, do you have any qualms about taking your friends’ money? The way I see it, every time we play it’s akin to asking them to play a game with loaded dice at worst, or a game of 6-deck blackjack with the stronger players serving as the house at best.

Reduce the stakes. Let them get more play per cash. This could also in turn (maybe) improve their game. You need to find a good balance where they don't have a problem playing once a month since the potential impact isn't as big. At least if you can get 50% of your "usual losing players" to play more often, that's a win. As long as the stakes doesn't get so low that nobody cares anymore (especially your winning players).

What stakes do you play now?

I personally would like to play 1/2 (even though I'm a mid player), but to get more frequent games, I am willing to play 0,50 or 1 BB instead.

Buy them a book.

We have this same issue with a few regulars. All you can do is

Make social better. Make a point to engage with them about personal stuff. A lot

Coach them. Explain why you just bet 3/4 of the pot. Tell them your strategy as it happens.

DONT FUCKING BULLY THEM. we had a small game a few months back and the group decided to play Omaha. First hand the bully with the nut flush took two other players stacks cause they aren’t good and thought their flushes might be ok. Game went from five players to three and we quit playing Omaha right then and there and I don’t think we’ll ever play it again.
Don’t taunt
Don’t tease
Don’t take every penny you can (that’s not what you are there for, right?)

Social games have to be cultivated socially. If you just want some people to run over, go to a casino.
