How many sets do you have? (1 Viewer)

I know some of you, I don't know some of you. But I love all of you... except for three of you.

Having said that, Why the need for so many sets? How many games does everyone on here really host? Now, I get the collecting thing, but why full sets?? I truly don't get it.
I host a weekly tournament (not at my place every week, but it runs weekly between a few of us) and then a monthly cash game. One of the reasons why I took these photos is because this is about the most I will ever have at one point. I wanted to see a few sets in person before some additional purchases/let some go. I will probably end up with two tournament sets and two cash sets, which feels like a good mix. To be honest, when the prices started to really skyrocket over this past summer, I was worried that if I didn’t get a few more sets soon, I might never be able to afford them so that was definitely part of the thinking.

I host nine times a year. Each set uses a different blind structure. When players frequently attend, they can tell by the chips in play what kind of game they are in for.

Much like going to a different casino. The structure at Bally's is very different than the structure at the Wynn. A single style of play can be good at one but not the other. You must be able to adjust your game to be able to cash at both (or 10 different sets in my case).

Now, I get the collecting thing
Do you? :)

As a collector at heart, I seem to only maintain interest in items that can be shared with others ... things like real estate, bourbon, wine, guns ... and poker chip sets. Of course I find enjoyment in the research, the procurement, and the pride of ownership, but I most enjoy sharing that ownership with friends and family -- whether it's vacationing with friends, cracking open that special bottle, hitting steel targets, or playing poker.

I quickly lose interest in "personal items" like watches or coins or comics or cards, and most certainly have no desire to hoard a bunch of single poker chips just to say I have them. That's not what poker chips are for. So for me, having 5-6 or even 9-10 sets is really no different than having 9-10 of anything else on my list.

Just a different perspective.

Well said. I couldn't agree more.

I don't get why you are trying to rationalize the hobby. Why does someone buy many cars?

It's not as though someone buys a few parts from a Lambo...they need the whole thing. Why does it matter what others want to collect?

I figure I'm one of the three.

You are definitely not one of the three haha

I probably averaging hosting 12 to 15 times a year. I love getting different sets into play. I also like having chips from different manufactures. I don't need 10 paulson sets.

I currently have a cpc, trk, rhc, and abc cash set. I also have two more ABC sets. One is a limit and one is a tourney.

I have another cpc set on the way and am negotiating to buy another rhc. I happen to currently be winning at poker. Might as well spend it on chipsets.

I don't understand buying singles. You can't get them into play?

I don't think Brie and I have hosted a single game in over a year! Does it really matter? Some of us enjoy collecting, does anyone really need an outdated currency collection of hundreds of thousands of dollars... or stamps? What about outrageously expensive bottles of Burbon that will never be consumed? Sit on a shelf and looked at? Private libraries of thousands of books to look good on shelves?

So even though we haven't hosted in a year, and when we do its single table tourneys with family and friends, does that make it wrong to collect chips? Something both Brie and I do together and trully passionate about? I don't get it.

Also we attend a lot of meet ups and get to bring guest sets

That's what makes the hobby special for us, attending these meet ups, meeting new people that share our passion.

We have been very fortunate in what we have managed to put together so far. Also as far as singles being basically useless... I beg to differ.

Just because some put them in display cases and have them to "look at" doesn't mean we all use them for the same reasons. We enjoy bringing singles and sample sets to games for others coming into the hobby to be able to check out a variety of chips. Even Verteans often have not experienced many of the chips as they may focus on specific sets.

As far as set size, often it comes up "do you really need that many chips?" Well, if you choose to host single table games without aspirations of venturing out to these larger meet ups... then it probably doesn't make sense to you. But there are many of us that trully enjoy getting together and sharing our treasures with others.

@semicolin there in the brown shirt beside my Landshark probably spent over an hour looking at chips, shuffling through singles and just looking at our collection. I never said a word, but made my whole trip worth while. Watching another chippers passion and looking at the possibilities. No, sorry we didn't drag 500 pounds of poker chips 500 miles just to say look at us, aren't we awesome! It's all about interactions with friends and like minded enthusiasts. You trully never know when you are going to meet yet another life long friend, you never know when looking at sample sets as a new chipper that they might identify their Grail set and future quest!

Remember if you ain't havin fun... you're just dyin!

I don't speak for the "got to catch em all" people, who I assume do it for the same reasons as most collectors of whatever, but the singles I do have are because I just really love the chip and can find use for them as card-cappers. Not to mention, they are almost always chips that cannot be found (or are worth the expenditure to me) in quantity.

I like that you have different color Pelican cases for each set :)

I wish they made more colors. It does appear that way here, but in reality it looks more like this

And the singles more like

May seem unorganized, but there is a method to the madness. Even dealer buttons and cut cards have their place

Organized hoarding I guess. Lol
